New V3i

Hi, just taken delivery of a V3i. Been swinging a DFX for 6 years but on reading the V3i manual I realize I`m on a big learning curve! If anyone has any tips on set up for the U.K. it would be much appreciated!

Hi John !

Regarding UK setting up of your V3i......where are you?...roughly 'speaking'.

Also, do you have a particular kind of searching in mind?

Don't be phased by the wealth of adjustments available, just because they are available.

You only adjust the same settings as if you had a 4 knob detector.

Discrimination range.

Sensitivities.

Audio preferences.

Visual presentation screen.

There are many other 'layers' of refinement available, but learn to crawl before you try to run too quickly with this beauty.

"Slowly slowly catchy monkey"

1st outing, use Coin & Jewelery, with the discrimination open for acceptance, from Plus 94 down to minus 20.

Choose you audio mode to suit your likings,

Play a lot with it indoors to familiarise yourself with the 'pop-up' menus, and what adjustments they provide.

Be aware, that what you initially see, is not the limit of what is available.............but that journey of discovery must be a patient one.

So give us some info, and I'll try to assist.

I initially set mine the same as my DFX. It was just a matter of converting the different names and ranges...for example a Pre Amp setting of 3 on my DFX is roughly an RX gain of 11 or 12 on the V3i.

One big thing to realize is this is hot out of the box. (The DFX was conservative out of the box.) If your around EMI... Frequency Offset, single frequency, smaller coil, salt compensate, lower sensitivity settings all help. I've never had to use them all. (Excellent punch begins with even lower sensitivities/well rounded other adjustments so.....more is not always better.)

Iron situations will have you using LockTrack some....and DD strengths/combined with a couple mid/small coils will have you getting through tough spots, right off the bat. Recovery speed is a major use tool in iron also....you can separate signals like no other machine!
Magic's program has concepts that will let you know where iron is but....restricts most of the audio from it (and channels this audio to a distinct range that lessens noise). Check that out for sure.

If you are in heavy fertilization, using Salt Compensate, will really help to maximize your ability to run a bit higher sensitivities.

Texasranger's observation that this box runs like a "four nobber" has great insight! Once you learn that interface and how "just" the main use things balance....not much messing with controls. (Ahhh.....but tuning preferences to your likings.....woot!) Learn to flip through that interface, even if you don't know what it all means, as this will set you up for minimal frustration and learning occurring in huge "chunks".

Welcome to the forum and enjoy!

Hi all, many thanks for the advice. I live in south Scotland and detect on farmland and beach. Can`t wait to get out when chores are finished (just moved house so plenty to do)
