new v3i user

I'm confused, you bought a used unit and have 2 out of 3 bad coils. This is odd, very odd. If this was true why wouldn't you want your money back?

Then you tell me the 950 coil is operating correctly with a dead battery. This can not happen. Either the battery or charger works or it doesn't, the battery is good or it isn't. Test with a voltmeter and post the results.

If you bought 2 bad coils, a bad charger, or bad battery or all of these you need to talk to the seller.

I'd like to know how it performed for the seller.

i tested them all outside

only the 10" immediatly overloads in the air.

the 12 and 950 do not.

the dead battery thing is weird. i put the 950 on. displays full batt. i put the 12 on it displays full bat. i put on the bad
10" coil. displays near dead battery and overloads.

i am ground balancing

i am not using frequency. offset.

i notice the 12 is way more falsey and jumpy than the 950 on the same settings.

im just confused because i dont know the detector that well.
it realily threw me off because i took the v3i for the first time with 10" and it would overload above rx3. so now i know it is a bad
coil

so when i took it out tonight with the super 12 and it got falsey above rx6-7 is freaked me out and got
me thinking i had another bad coil!!

im just not sure how power lines and electronics affect this machine. my explorer never had one issue.

ive been reseaching but havnt seen many people complain about emi making it so bad u havr to run
rx6.

thanks for your help

SINCERELY V3I NOOBIE!

not the 950. if u look at my previous i said the bad 10" coil displays near dead battery. but other 2 display full. i can take a pic for proof.

Ok, sorry I re-read and you just have me confused.

First off call Whites don't email them.

Make sure you explain the 10" reads dead battery, but other coils read full battery. I have never seen this.

The seller has good reviews and you stated that Whites just tested the detector in June. They will have a record and it is a V3 upgraded to a V3I. If the coils came with a V3 they are older coils. Early D2 coils had problem with epoxy curing but I didn't hear of problems with the 950 or 12" coils. Make sure they have V rated numbers stamped on them.

Call whites and explain your problem, their attitude is sweet as honey and they are very very very helpful. did i only use 3 verys i meant 4 verys :)

Rx8 is pretty hot for detecting and will see quarters at 8" no problem. I normally hunt with the gain in the 5-7 range, anything higher in town and I see diminishing returns. I hunt really trashy places.

The all metal channel and the disc channel are separate and I run the all metal hot for pinpointing and running mixed mode stereo. The all metal channel stays in the high 80's and so does the disc, usually 87. Recovery delay 60 and 5hz bandpass. These settings will find wheat cents at the 10" mark when using the larger coil or when the ground allows.

PM cleared my confusion. Looks like 2 good coils - good detector - 1 bad D2 coil.

The detector runs with 950 coil as it should. Therefore good detector and a 950 that will do RX15 and with boost.

The 12" passes the RX15 air test and only overloads when near ground with boost on. Good coil.

All that leaves is the D2 which had to be an early version D2 since the detector was an upgraded V3. Bad coil.

Boost has limited use and only when you understand its limitations. I don't use boost for hunting in my soil. I can run RX 15 in my soil, but don't. I should have a post on diminishing returns as RX is increased. Many people run the V3I too hot.

The rule of thumb is that, to gain another inch of depth the gain must be doubled. This means that increasing the gain from 14 to 15 will not improve depth much at all whereas increasing the gain from 2 to 4 should gain another inch. So then 4 to 8 gains another inch and 8 to 15 would only gain another inch. So don't get crazy on setting the RX at the upper levels because it provides diminishing rewards. In some cases the added noise will actually negate the increase. So in my opinion, higher RX and more noise and signal loss would be about the same as lower RX with less signal loss. If you are hunting in a clean area with only deep targets, then run the gain just below the overload point for max depth. But if there are a lot of shallow targets, then this will result in a lot of audio overload signals which might be annoying. The bottom line is, with any coil, run the gain as high as you can for stable operation, just as you'd do with any detector.

thanks for peoples input. i have a way better understanding of typical rxgain levels
while detecting emi places, trashy, and soil.
