new v3i user

ive bought a whites v3i package off of these forums and its on its way now. ive used whites xlt and dfx in the past, but not a ton
of time. ive hard an explorer 2 for the last 4 years. ive had quite a bit of use on it and am familiar
to how its tones hit and numbers. few questions..

1. it comes with stock 10". a whites 950 eclipse and whites 12" deep. what are each of them good for?
i hunt mostly older churches and homesteads. some homesteads have roots and trees and are real tough to detect.
many places are high trash. soil varies...some is mildly red and other times its super red. how
will the soil effect my detecting or coils?

2. is there a place i can look up what numbers certain objects usually hit at?

3. any good articles or links on v3i?

4. when its doing that 3 bar over pinpoint mode, is that used for an
exact depth gauge also?

5. is it very chatty in preset programs?

6. i have no pinpointer/probe, is the v3i good at identify where it is? i could
never pinpoint with the explrer 2 well

Congratulations you have purchased the overall best performing machine ever produced.:clapping:

The biggest problem new users have is EMI.

Start buy using a stock coin and jewelery program and learn to identify EMI. Turn it on in your house and turn the gain up till it starts to give you a bunch of random signals. Once you learn to recognize EMI you have the battle almost won. Now turn the gain down until it no longer produces signals/targets.

This is the same procedure to use when out in the field. There are other ways of coping with EMI but they still entail turning the gain down and they incrementally raising it again.

With your mineralized red soil you sill need to experiment with filters, the stock d2 coil will suit you fine for quite some time.

The 3 bar pinpoint will help give you a tremendous amount of information once you get accustomed to what targets hit strongest on certain frequencies. If you are going after silver the 2.5 band will almost always, 99% of the time hit the strongest.

Pinpointing will be pretty easy using all the coils you listed.

The stock programs can be chatty and if they are we will get to that aspect of changing filters over or swing speed and recovery once you get your machine. The deepest program is the mixed mode stereo and adaptations to it.

There are many people here with a plethora of knowledge that will chime in and help, it will just take you to put the time in and experiment with what settings work best for you in your area.

Above all dont let it get you upset and become frustrated the answers will be right here.

A couple years back presumptuousness caused me a couple of weeks of grief until I settled down and learned about EMI.

Rob's links at the top of this list is a library of information and I think there is a chart right on the V3i box showing where most targets will ID at, used to be anyway.

went out for the first time today with v3i. abought 2 hours. went to a church that ive hiit pretty hard several times with my explorer 2.
its only given up 2 mercs and an indian and it was to point that there were np good signals left.

first off the machine kept overloading. i had to set the rx gain down to 2 for it to be stable.

then i ran it in deep silver and coin&jewelry. did alot of just scanning targets and trying to learn how it reads
on the vdi and pin point.

didnt find anything but a penny. it was alot tougher than my explorer 2. very chatty.

got alot of researching and testing to do!

You need to take the detector into an area of low EMI and turn the gain up.

Does the coil overload in the air?

We have to make sure everything is working properly and that you dont have a bad coil.

it doesnt overload in the air. i took it to my dads house tonight and it
overloaded in his backyard over rx gain 2 again.

it gives random signals at 3. then 4 or higher it overloads

not sure if there is alot of emi at church and dads house. theres no big power lines or anything.

I agree to a bad coil, a call to White's should be all that you need to do to get another one. Do you have access to another coil to test?

it came with a whites 950 and super deep 12. ill try those.

does having the cover on the coil affect it?

i bought the machine with the 3 coils, none of it had been used but it sat in closet for years. v3 with an
update

Coil covers will collect dirt inside and could cause the symptoms you describe, I don't use them for that reason. Take the cover off and try again or try another coil but it sure sounds like a coil related problem.

used the 950 and super 12. they would let me go up to 7-8 range without getting
squirrelly. tried stock 10 again in same spot. wouldnt let me go above rx 2.

ran in both coin&jewelry and deep silver

If you got an early V3 updated, some of the original coils developed a problem with shrinking epoxy, or so I was told. A call to the factory with your serial # should get you a new coil in the mail. Many coils were replaced with the update but maybe the original owner did not send in his coil when it was updated.....

White's will take good care of you so don't worry.......

now im real confused. i took the v3i out to the same chuch with the super deep 12. it went crazy over 6 rxgain. would over load at 15

so i brought it home and tested in air.

10" stock - overloads in air at rxgain15

super 12- overloads in air at rxgain + boost

950 - does not overload. falses alot with 15+ boost

had it inside and took it outside for all

is the detector messed up?

A good coil is not suppose to overload in the air at RX15 with boost OFF.

just retested inside in air

10 coil. overloaded immediatly in rx15. i also noticed
when i turned on the machine it showed almost dead battery
it has a near full charge

super 12 did not overload at 15. but if u put it in the grass it will

950 no overload, no falsing

i took it out with the v3i with 12" out back my aprtment. it got real falsey above rx 8. the church was falsey above 6rx.

is this normal?

there are alot of power lines around the church. electrical boxes also

out back of my aprtment there are dish network dishes in ground and some electrical boxes by car wash area.

are these things likely to no let it function above rx8?

i used a minelab before this and nver had an issue around any electrical.

i dont kno if the detector naturally just signals alot.

i know the 10" is back for sure.

hopefully whites calls me back to find out if all this falsing is normal

It should be tested outside to test at RX15. Anytime you are in a high EMI area you will have to reduce the gain This is the same with any detector.

If the battery is fully charged the detector will not show a dead battery. Check the battery with a volt meter. If the battery is really dead the V3I will not function correctly. How could the 950 function with a dead battery?

super 12 did not overload at 15. but if u put it in the grass it will

950 no overload, no falsing

Concentric coils are less affected by EMI. Are you ground balancing? Are you using frequency offset?
