new to metal detecting

Also, I see you've asked i a couple posts asking for someone to share their site(s) with you....and I'm only saying this so you'll understand why you probably won't get many takers. Too many people have been burned by sharing a site with someone, especially someone they don't know, and if someone has a "hot" field, they're likely saving it for themselves and their hunting partner (likely a long-time trusted friend) if they hunt with one.

ya i wasn't really thinking when i posted that, now that you mention it i can completely understand why people would react that way, so let me rephrase, if someone out there would like to try and hunt around by me, and want's to meet up and maybe make a new MD buddy then by all means let me know, because currently i have no one lol, but eventually i hope to know a few people i could go with.

Let me say that when I first got my Scorpion I was so frustrated at only digging nails

ya i was getting really frustrated, probably because i was so tired from walking up a mountain like trail with steel toe boots on, half the time my boots would be detected, the other half is was iron of sorts, but eventually i cam to the conclusion that it happens and it was only my first hunt and you cannot rush something like this its a skill learned through experience.

also BusDigger to help em get an idea of how to search for the areas your looking for can you name a couple of sites as an example that you or someone you know has hunted around? do you mean old houses where there no longer is a house and its basically just land? sorry for all the questions guys, i'm just trying my best to find areas where i'll get good experience and have a good time too, thanks again for the reply's

sincerely,
max

Max,
Go and visit your local MD dealer and your local treasure hunting club.

Jeff

Jeff I'm not to sure if there is a local club, i would love to join one and hear from the well seasoned persons, but i didn't think going into a local dealer would be an idea but since there is only 1 then i guess it couldn't hurt to try, thanks for the suggestions

sincerely,
max

Look on old maps, talk to anyone who knows the history of your area, etc. Rural farming areas are good about old farms, churches, and schools being long gone, and while you should still fill your holes in crop fields and pack-out any trash you dig (be sure to tell the land owners that), you won't need to be as careful digging like you would in sod. Practice recovering targets in your own yard 1st until you can get good enough at it so you don't leave any evidence of your having been there. There's a bit of practice required at it, and public property isn't the place you want to leave "ugly" spots. Ask friends and family to detect their yards too. While finds may still be made at spots that have been "beat to death", noting beats hunting virgin areas.

Don't start-out expecting to find comparable things like some members here do, many put in as much or more time researching as they do actual hunting. Start-out getting to know your machine and recovering targets.

Hi Max
I live here in LaGrange, Dutchess County. Fortunately, we live in a great place to detect. A good place to start is checking out some of the old maps that you can find online, but as we move into fall it is going to become very easy to spot old cellar holes and foundations along the roads. You can couple that with finding out who the landowner is either via posted signs or asking neighbors or going to the website Dutchess County Parcel Access which gives you the landowners name. I have had a very productive spring and summer detecting and that is from just one historical farm with a lot of land.
Best of Luck
Maybe I will see you detecting sometime.

thanks for the replies guys,
BusDigger, i actually did a bit of research last night, and found a way to view old newspapers for free during a certain time period on new york post's website, from about 1880 to 1920 the article are all free, so i did a bit of research skimming through them and actually found out about a couple of things, 1 there was a murder of a well dressed man down by the harbor i live by, he had gold plated buttons on his shirt, so i may try and get permission and see if there was ever anything dropped by either him or who killed him, also in 1915 there was a string of robberies by three foreign men who eventually got caught, but had hit up about 3 or 4 businesses, they were safe robbers, so i may go down to one of the old buildings by me that they robbed and see if anything was again left behind,

Killmerg let me first start out by saying welcome to the forum i hope you find this place as helpful as i have so far, also that's pretty cool you live in LaGrange and so close to me, now how do you go about getting permission, just straight out ask? "excuse me sir but i would like to use my metal detector on you land, I'll pick up what ever trash i may find underneath and I'll replace the holes back to normalcy" something like that? I've worked for door to door companies before but I'm still shy when it comes to out right talking to people

again thanks for the replies guys and I'll try my luck today weather permitting

You'll find once you just jump into researching local history, one thing will lead to another, and before you know it you'll have a list of "possibilities". It's human nature to have "high hopes", so don't become discouraged when the majority of them don't pan-out, it's just the nature of the beast.....but keep in mind the number of possibilities is endless..it just all depends on how much effort you want to put into it. The more you do, the more you'll get in return.

Good luck!

ricklowa2009 thank you for the welcome, and busdigger as always thank you for the advice, i haven't gotten a chance today to do research, but maybe tonight i will

so today the weather by me was nice out finally which gave me a chance to do my second hunt with the metal detector, i went around my house an apparently my house has no metal in the year at all, at least not where i looked, so then i went to 2 local parks by where i live, the first one i went to all i kept on finding was trash, that is until i found a small round object, that's right i found my first coin ladies and gentlemen, true it was only a memorial but hey at least it holds more value you then a can pop top, and it didn't stop there upon searching around the same area i found another penny and a dime, all current currency but hey better then nothing, so i officially found something of worth and i must say i have never been happier to have in my possession 12 cents.the second park didn't go as well, but hey beggars can't be choosers right? anyway just wanted to give you guys quick update, i may go out tomorrow weather permitting and hopefully I'll find some more coins or something along the lines of a nice find that i can show you guys, thank you everyone who has given me advice on things i should do and places to look, it has really helped me along

and all the trash i found

Very cool..... I would recommend you check out playgrounds. I used to find a lot of coins there. It is also good practice to learn your detectors sounds and screens.

ya I'm trying to learn the detector sounds but for the most part they all sound the same to me, except sometimes when you hit heavy metal like iron, or steel, it does a very low beep, otherwise their all high pitched beeps. i wonder if i hit a ring or some other type of precious metal it'll be a higher pitch

hey everyone sorry i haven't been around to post at all lately, i haven't been able to go out lately as i have been really busy with everything, i actually found this site that I've been messing around with, its kinda cool, hopefully my order comes in soon, anyway what it is is you do offers for points 1 point = 1 cent, and it adds up and then you can use it towards amazon merch, i ordered something for a stupid hobby i like (don't laugh when i say it) magic the gathering, i needed covers for my cards, but i figured you guys could probably find pin pointers, or other metal detecting tools on there and in your free time would just save up points and get it, anyway if any of you guys are interested the link is

http://www.points2shop.com/?ref=uin1288266294

but besides all that how has everyone been? any new finds? again i appologize for not posting anything just been busy with life lol, anyway talk to you guys later

sincerely,
max

what's with the face? I'm just trying to spread the word of cool things i come across, the site just so happens to be one, i enjoy doing i t in my free time, I'm not gonna say i make a ton of points at a shot, but i make enough where in a couple days i can order something else that i want, or if i save for a couple weeks I'll have enough for something really nice, anyway, just figured i would let you guys know about it, if it's not something you guy's are into sorry i posted it, like i said just trying to help out the community, especially those who are strapped for cash but have plenty of time to spend like myself, and need something productive to do
