New to Detecting questions

Arcturus

New member
Hi Folks, I'm a newb to detecting, so new I don't even have a detector yet. Anyway, I'm hoping to learn from all the experienced people here and I have a few questions. I live in the S.F. Bay area but own land in gold country near Grass Valley, I also have the old Emmigrant Trail running right through my land! So I will hopefully be using it for finding relics and coins on my property but maybe some prospecting nearby as well.

I have my eyes on 2 used detectors, one is the Minelab 705 and the other is a Whites MXT e-series both are virtually the same price around $500. From what I've read it looks like a longer learning curve for the MXT than the minelab. What do you think?

Get the Minelab X-Terra 705 Gold Pack, it comes with the ideal coil for your needs and more.

Hi Landstar The used detector I'm looking at has the 9 inch 7.5kHz coil. I will be doing most of my hunting at first on my land will this coil do the trick?

I have owned a couple MXT's and all of the X-TERRA's. When considering both the MXT and the X-TERRA 705, there are several similarities. Coin modes, Prospecting modes, tracking, discrimination etc. I won't deny that both are great detectors. And other then my XLPro (which is no longer manufactured), if I were going to buy another White's detector, it would likely be the MXT. But the reason I don't need the MXT is because I have the 705. Some of the many reasons that I prefer the 705 are......in no certain order..... weight and balance, ability to operate at any one of three frequencies, noise cancel, notch discrimination, multiple tone audio and Tracking GB offset.
The weight and balance difference is pretty self-explanatory. The physical design of the MXT implements technology that White's has been using for 20+ years. Some might say, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". But technology has allowed manufacturers to package more electronics in a smaller package. The X-TERRA takes advantage of that by designing the X-TERRA control housing to be a fraction of the size and weight of the MXT.
The MXT operates at 14 kHz. The X-TERRA can operate at 3 kHz, 7.5 kHz or 18.75 kHz, depending on which coil you have on. Having the ability to operate at any one of three frequencies is unique to the X-TERRA. Although any of the coils are capable of finding anything metal, each frequency has benefits for specific conditions and targets. If you want to learn more about the application of the various frequencies and coils, I invite you to read the eBook, Understanding your X-TERRA. The link to the FREE book can be found at the top of these posts.
Noise Cancel is an adjustment that choses the optimum operating channel for the particular site you are hunting. If there is any electrical interference in the area, adjusting the Noise Cancel can reduce or completely remove that interference. This allows the detector to perform to it's maximum capability by slightly changing the operating frequency of the detector, nullifying the effects of the electrical harmonics.
The notch discrimination of the X-TERRA allows you to reject any given target(s) and accept all others. With the variable discrimination of the MXT, when you set the level of discrimination, you are rejecting any and all targets with conductive values less than or equal to where you set it. In other words, the X-TERRA allows you to reject bottle caps and still accept nickels. With the MXT variable discrimination set to reject bottle caps, you are not only rejecting nickels, you are also at risk of rejecting various pieces of gold jewelry, old silver coins (3-cent silver) and anything else that has conductive values less than or equal to where you set it to reject bottle caps.
In Coin/Jewelry mode, the MXT offers one tone for all targets. In relic mode, it provides one tone for ferrous targets and one tone for conductive targets. The X-705 offers the user the choice of having one tone for everything, two tones, three tones, four tones or multiple tones. Since there are 28 notch segments on the X-705, in multiple tone mode, you have one separate and distinct audio tone for each of the 28 notches. When using multiple tone audio, nickels sound different than pennies, pennies sound different than dimes, dimes sound different than quarters, quarters sound different than silver dollars etc, etc.
Both detectors offer adjustible ground balance and both offer Tracking. But the X-705 allows the user to set the ground phase automatically, via the software. This provides a precise ground balance for any given location. In addition. the X-705 offers Beach Tracking, which updates more quickly than regular tracking, and a feature called Tracking Ground Balance offset. This allows the user to run the detector with either a negative or positive ground phase, and maintain that "offset" in a tracking mode. What this allows is for the user to have the optimum ground balance throughout the hunt.

As I said, there are many reasons I chose to use the X-TERRA 705. If you have any additional questions, don't hesitate to ask. There are a lot of knowledgeable folks here on the X-TERRA forum. HH Randy

The 9" concentric 7.5 kHz coil will not be as sharp as the 6", 10" and 10x5" DD coils. The Gold Pack comes with the 10x5" DD coil and would be more suited to your requirments.

It will find stuff, but it will not give you the seperation that the DD coils can. For more info, click the link below (this will open up a PDF file from Minelab's site).

Minelab Coils

Thanks Randy, Are you trying to scare me off?
I think I made my mind up on the Minelab, probably why I only posted on the 705 forum, but you confirmed it. Thanks for all the info, as others have recommended I will be downloading the E-book soon as I have this detector in my possession.

Landstar, Thanks for the info. I guess once I learn the machine, I'll have to use my findings to fund a DD coil.

Jack feel free to give me a call. I can help answer your questions an give ya a great deal!

i was like you mxt or x terra 705 , never used mxt , but x terra 705 I'm in love with it, i think i might propose tonight and give her the ring o wait she has give me 3 gold rings in 1 month jajajajajaj

I walk behind my neighbor in fresh water beach areas and pick up clad that he walked over, not knowing for sure what the beeps for. His has all the bells and whistles with probability ratings and such. Mainly got to get used to your machine. You probably want 6 inch coil ASAP or the 5x7 dd to help discriminate and the gold.

Well after that there is little left to say. HOWEVER, battery life. 4 AAs good for 20 to 25 hours. Beat that, not with the MXT, it uses 8 AAs, at up to 40 hours, close. I get better than 20 on four with headphones.

If I was going to do it again, Xterra 1st. I still think the MXT is a good machine and I would own one. It is based on a great gold machine, but I find that I do more coin hunting by far and the multiple tones were the selling point (I hunt in 4 tone). The 705 will also hit gold that other machines will not, there is a link in FAQ FAQ that discuses this. Weight, I also have an Explorer and the thing weighs a ton. I much prefer the Xterra. My Explorer gets much less use even though it will find coins in heavier iron trash. Weight does make a difference.

Bottom line for me is that the MXT has no advantage over the Xterra while the ML has several attractive features the MXT doesn't.

Thanks for the help folks! I'm meeting tomorrow to pick up the 705. I also have the opportunity to get a 10x5 18.75khz as well and will probably pick that up too. I feel like I'm going too fast too soon since I have never even held a MD in my hands much less used one. Wish me luck!!

I think you'll be fine and also think you'll be glad you went with the 705. I started out having never held an MD either and purchased a 505. Within a year I had used it enough to realize that I wanted to upgrade to a 705 and did so. It's not hard to pick up and the more you use it, the more experience you gain and the more comfortable you will feel with it. Remember to keep the E-book handy and check back here on the forum when you run into something that baffles you. It's a very rewarding hobby in more ways than one! Good luck and happy hunting. Tom

I noticed that you said this is your first machine. I've been at it for about 4 years and my first machine was just a beep and dig, but I went to trying out a TID machine, like the one you're getting, after a year or so. Be careful about paying too much attention to the Numerical readout and letting it be the deciding factor on whether to dig. The reason is that below about 6" the ID on a target will start to shift downward, so if it would read as a good target above ground it might read as trash if its much deeper than 6". Also, the depth indicator can be off, depending on the size and depth of the target.

The best approach with your new machine will be to dig most everything for a while, taking note of how your machine responded to the target. I'm afraid that all the bells and whistles on these new machines set people up for disappointment because they think the machine will be able to reliabily identify everything under the coil, every time. The fact is, there are just too many variables at play here. A lot of times if there are good targets in the area you're searching they will be next to junk or have junk on top of them. This is called masking because a lot of the Target ID machines can't see the good target because of the nearby trash. This is where smaller coils come in handy and going slower if there is a lot of trash. If I keep going with this I will probably write too much or bore you. If you have questions I can help with, just PM me. I have an X-terra 70 that I've been using for a while and like it for coinshooting, so I can help with questions. The 70 and 705 are not much different. I know that because I had a 705 too. Just didn't like the international symbols on the buttons and the 705 I had couldn't quite reach targets as deep as the 70 I have, but most of the 705s are not like that. You just get some variability in machines and I had an inferior one I suppose. If I can help, let me know.

I went to see the detector and we met in a strip mall parking lot on a busy street. Turned it on and it went crazy, numbers jumping around and beeping. We drove a short distance to a park and seemed to work fine there. The seller did not bring the owners manual so I was not sure how to check all the features, so I will meet again tomorrow at a historic park, Rancho San Antonio. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rancho_San_Antonio_(Peralta)

The seller said he got it in June and used it a couple of times at the Santa Cruz beach. I took the coil cover off and there was a good size scratch on the coil about the size of a silver dollar and there were numerous scratches on the arm and control head. Either he had it in the trunk bouncing around or he had sword play with it. Anyway he is asking 550 obo. I would not offer more than 450 if it checks out tomorrow. It comes with a sand scoop, small SS trowel, bag and headphones. I'll see if he still has the receipt and a transferable warranty.

It's a tough decision based on appearances, but then I'm not such good looking guy either.

Not sure if the warranty transfer is a big deal, it's only 1 year anyway. I think I did hear something about newer ones being a little longer, but unfortunately not lifetime like some of their competitors. Also sounds like he may not know how to use it which makes it hard to you to determine if it even works right.

You can get a brand new one with a warranty for about $700, something to think about, at $450 it sounds more attractive.

The bouncing around and irratic behavior could be associated with RFI in the area. (alarms, wireless hubs, etc). I say that because you indicated it worked OK in a different location.

I know you didn't ask....... but I'd be hesitant to buy a 5 month old detector from a guy who used it at the beach and obviously didn't take care of it. Salt water is an invisible killer of electronic gear. And you said he had used it on the beach. If it looks like it was abused on the outside, one can only imagine what it may look like on the inside. JMHO HH Randy

I'm with Randy ..... for about $150 more you get a brand new one with full warranty but if he goes for $450 and you want to test it just turn it on and press the AM (all metal) button on the front of the machine...... then find a clean area on the ground where the detector makes no noise and scatter some change, piece of tinfoil, a nail and some jewelry on the ground about two feet apart and see if it gives you different tones and different display numbers (TID's) on the front........ If that checks out then on the faceplate of the MD in the lower middle between the "+ and -" sign is button that looks like a coil...... press that one time and you will see a circle which means your in "Pinpointing"..... now run that over your coins and you'll get a high pitched whistle sound when you go over each coin to confirm pinpoint works..... then press that same button again to go back to normal....... I just got my 705 about a month ago and really like it a lot and still more to learn.....(the nail should give you a minus number and all the rest should give you a positive number) Somebody on here may be able to give you a better way to test it but if not this info should help in your decision..... Good Luck
Joe
