New Guy looking for a good machine + MD tips

Hi there! I decided to buy a detector. i am not really sure which one I want. The amount of info is simply overwhelming. I am going to Europe soon, I was wondering which one will preform better on European soils. Will be hunting for silver and gold coins, maybe a jar :) i have been looking @ v3i, Minelab GT, DFX, F75... I am confused a little, but seems like the v3i beats the competition. Whats the best and fastest way to learn a new device? Simulations? tones... well I am new to it. Any metal detecting tips would be greatly appreciated as well.
Sincerely.

What is nice about the V3i is that you don't have to learn very much at first to enjoy the power of the V3i right out of the box. The stock programs are very very good. You can then make adjustments as you go.

I second that! I am a newbie with this generation of equipment and I can honestly say that the V3i produced results for me right out of the packing materials and into the field. You could do much much worse than a V3i or VX3.

Thanks for quick replies guys!! I went to the store today and saw a vx3 as well. What is the major difference btn 2? Is it worth it?

There is LOTS of valuable information in the sticky tips and general information above in the lists of posts. This is one of them comparing the V3i and VX3.

I would think seriously on the V3i. Europe has HUGE variations in how much iron is in the ground and how the ground has been treated with fertilizers. Plus...the multi- language EVERYTHING has a lot more relavance there.

. ..

A couple of points.

First though the V3i/VX3 are great out of the box, that isn't quite true in Europe as NW1885 alluded too. (You have got to tweak the programs, but they are easy to find any of the UK guys will email them to you - including me in Germany) That said, I've had mine a week and have NO problems programming it. It's not a big deal but you should do as much reading before yours arrives - really, that was key for me. Though it takes 5 minutes at a new site to bury a coin and find the best setting, you know you are getting optimal performance for the site on any given day.

Second, how much are wireless headphones and a rechargeable pack/chargers worth to you? The VX3 doesn't come with them. If you add the price of these onto the VX3 you are only saving around 70 bucks. (The VX3 just came out so you aren't getting the same discount - all things being equaled. I absolutely love the wireless headphones but it's not a deal breaker for me. You can get rechargeables pretty cheap, say 20 bucks for 2700MaH plus another 15 or so for a charger. Personally, I love the adjustability of the V3i and the "savings" is not quite what it seems. To me it comes down to the money and do you mind the complexity. If you are going to have the unit for years, then go for the V3i.

also, a friend of mine had v3 unit sent for an "i" upgrade. Question: what exactly do they do? is his v3 machine NOW as good as v3i? is there any hardware that they change? or is it just the program? and once upgraded. Does affect the warranty?

I own what I like to call a V3+i. It is a V3 that was upgraded to the V3i option. This is a FACTORY upgrade and your machine becomes the same thing as the V3i fresh off the assembly line. Electronically the machines are the same, this is a software upgrade. Since it is an upgrade performed at the factory there is no change in the warranty.

The WHP are also upgraded and the pod and touch pad are replaced as well. The entire list of changes is on the forum, use the search feature.

You are going to have so much fun, dont be afraid to ask questions. This detector is very sensitive and will find electromagnetic interference from the next block away, however it is very easy to negate all of this with just asking a couple of questions. So dont get frustrated like I did and you will soon be finding old goodies.
