New Cortes, already going to crap.

Hey all, took the Cortes out today that has about 7-8 hours on it in total and it went to crap. The notch quit working, the NN and WWW don't even show up on the screen...and when I wave a nickel over the coil the signal is crackly and choppy even when the disc is set right at about the "f" in foil...and it rings up as 18-19 with the cursor over the foil category. Any ideas? I'm about to smash it on the ground and go back to the At Pro. Thanks for any thoughts.

Check your batteries. Mine would get irrational when the batteries were getting weak.

That's actually a good suggestion...the batteries are pretty low. If that's all it is I am going to feel really stupid.

Don't feel stupid. We've all been there. I smashed a brand new Ryobi weed wacker over my fire pit when after trying for half an hour to start the "easy zip start" wacker I realized the run button was in the off position. All my other wackers had a momentary shut off switch and not one that stayed in the off position until you manualy switch it to run position so I thought It was a piece of Cr*p....Well, it was after it's encounter with the fire pit.. Good Luck..

Did it taste like chicken :poke::rofl:.

HaHa..How's things Ski? It's a good thing it wasn't on your farm. Some poor cow would not have been very happy....Lol

Just a suggestion Jason,

I have the Deleon and run my discrimination between Minimum and Iron, right in the middle. This setting gives me better audio hits on nickels and I am still able to disc. out nails, also some nickels read in the foil region of the meter. Deep V and Buffalo nickels read in the 12 to 15 range, while shallow newer Jeffersons read 18 to low 20's.To stabilize meter numbers on targets in the ground, use short quick coil passes over the target while slowly lifting coil above the target an inch or so, that should help. As far as the notch, I never use that feature on the detectors I own that have it. Please do not smash your detector on the ground or against a tree.

If things don't get right with new batteries, pop the coil cover off and check again.

OR just send it in for the rest of your life till they fix it for free?:clapping: Unless of course you got it used?

Thanks Hombre, I would figure keeping the setting anything under nickel would include nickels with a favorable signal. The signal I was getting wasn't one that I would dig. When I tried the notch, narrow and wide it wouldn't knock out 3 different pulltabs and one square tab. But, as mentioned...maybe it was just the batteries...they were really low. My wife is in town with the kids and is picking some up for me. I wouldn never smash such a fine instrument...makes me feel better saying I would though...haha. We shall see. -Jay

Hi Jay, If you did buy it used, "don't sweat it"! If you think it needs to go in for a check up, send it back to Tesoro. Unless it shows obvious signs of abuse(ie. fire pit) or has been modded in some way Tesoro will fix it no matter how many owners it has had. If not, That means they have made a major shift in their past policy enjoyed by masny of us for many years. Give Rusy Henry a call before you ship it off so you will be up to speed on the procedure. HH, Charlie

I did buy it used from my brother who had about 5 hours on it. It's in flawless condition and I've only had it out a few hours myself. Hopefully the new batteries do the trick.

Nope, new batteries didn't do anything. The notch still doesn't work and if I turn the disc up to foil now it won't pick up nickels at all, the disc knob has to be between iron and foil for it to get nickels. Ridiculous.

Before you blow your top Jason.....

That is how to tune your Cortes discrimination, set the disc. low and go by the meter. My Deleon, which is not much different electronically, as I wrote earlier, signals harder on nickels with disc. set between Min. and Iron. As for notching out pulltabs, they are all different and will have conductivity differences. For instance, the square tabs come in at nickel, the bigger ones at regular pulltab notch just above nickel and then there are the old style 'beaver tail' pulltab that may be accepted, or maybe not. My old Pantera can be set up with the notch reject setting and knock out the old style beaver tails, but I don't use notch because it can cause you to lose good targets such as bigger gold rings, neat old tokens, watch fobs, etc. If you want to find the old stuff, a guy just has to trust his ears. I hardly ever let the meter tell me what to dig, the best discrimination is to dig it up.

I'm not going to blow my top Hombre, it's just one of those things. Worked fine when I bought it, used it for a few hours and it started to not work fine. I realize I can still get nickels, but I shouldn't have dig gum wrappers to get nickels. It obviously isn't working properly if it disc's out nickels between iron and foil. Also, the notch isn't just accepting pulltabs, it's not even showing the NN or WWW on the screen like it did before when notch was in use. Last year it was the AT Pro external speaker that just quit working for no reason, year before that it was problems with my Coinstrike. So that's what my "Ridiculous" was about. Also, being the second owner, they may not fix it for free.

Proper term to use is "...wrap it around a tree..." sounds less harsh. been there.

Sorry to hear of your lousy luck with detectors. I hope you've got a backup device because waiting for spring to arrive only to wait for a detector to return is painful.

Jay, my post should have included"for free". You pay for it's trip home to Tesoro, and they always pay for trip back to you. Can't beat that with 2 sticks!! HH, Charlie

 Hi,..I have actually heard some GOOD reports lately from Cortes users. I would like to have one myself. I use the notch system on the Golden but I think I would like to actually "see" what's being notched out instead of guessing. I share in your frustration too many times, but Tesoro has always been fair with me on repairs. The day they stop is the day I quit using these units. Period. I heard about a guy down on Padre Island, Texas who was metal detecting a beach when his detector gave off a loud signal. The guy then dug up a metal detector!!! Someone had bent the shaft in half and then buried it. I have to say that I have never been THAT frustrated but I have come close. HH

Back when I had one of them yeller things I was tempted to bury it as soon as I heard the noise it made :rofl:. Don't tell slingshot I said that :look:.
