New AT Pro In Route

I'm going to find out first hand if I like the AT Pro or not. I ordered the 5 x 8 coil for hunting trashy areas and the adapter cable so I can use my Killer B Wasp headphones.

In a couple of days the AT Pro coil will meet the dirt for some serious testing.:detecting:

Hope you enjoy it as well. I love mine so far even with the stock coil. Thinking about ordering the 5x8 next week now that its finally thawed out some here.

I hope you take the time to enjoy it like we have... mostly with the 5x8 coil ( thye should have made it the stock coil)

I tried to buy the AT Pro with just the 5 x 8 coil to test the water to see if I would like the detector or not , but that didn't pan out.

I did end up getting a great deal with both coils, thanks to Larry at NWI Detectors::thumbup:

Whatever you do, DON'T TELL JIM_TN! He's fiercly protective of 'his' Silver mine. He's been known to run other detectorists out of town just for asking directions to Overton Park! Others have simply disappeared without a trace, never to be heard from again. :starwars:

Overton Park? William, that place has been hunted out for year's. However, not a bad spot to start out with a new A T Pro. HH jim tn

If one of these fellows ever get in the water with those Pros...we'd see a gold coin posted by one of them soon.

Tabman take the time to learn it which don't take long Mine has been very good to me . Go hunt that Overton Park I see silver in your future with the ATP Ground Balance , Ground Balance which I know you already know that is the key I started out hunting in Pro zero mode with Iron audio on 36 and and you will get more info on your target than in standard mode Good Luck to you

Thanks for info. I read somewhere that you should have some discrimination with the iron audio on to be able to tell if it's a pry cap or not.

Any and all tips are welcome. I don't want towaste time figuring it out for myself. I want to be busy finding good stuff.:)

I run my iron audio @ 30 , I have tested it and any higher will mask a good target next to a iron nail. This is just my opinion. Mess around with it and find your best settings. Good luck,GS

one thing I would do is watch the Vids on the garret Site they are very helpful also Groundscanner is also right I run My iron audio at 36 but have took it down to 30 and it does help on the masking of coins with the nails . I have even took it down to 26 and it works extremely well in Iron infested old home sites

Yep! Larry at NWI is top notch! I just ordered the two coil special from him also...mine shows it will be here tomorrow.

Had mine for 1 year now and love it. If I`m hunting an old home site or relic hunting, I prefer pro zero mode. I would rather hear the iron than risk masking a good target such as a silver coin. If I`m hunting a park or modern home site where there is lots of clad, I usually hunt in pro coin mode, then you can switch on the iron audio to check out any targets that you think might be a bottle cap, but even then you can be fooled sometimes. Everybody has their own methods and favorite settings, and you will too after hunting with this machine for a while and you develop your own style. I think you will like it...good luck! :drinking:

Last tracking update: On FedEx vehicle for delivery

Bring it on Mr FedEx driver! I hope that I'm not the last one on the driver's route.

Gotta love that online tracking! Do you guys hunt the hillside where people sit for the concert during the barbecue festival? I imagine the old fellow who always sang "Old Man River" is long gone by now.
I watched all the AT videos on the Garrett site and a bunch on YouTube before I got my AT and then again after I had a few hunts under my belt - very helpful. Of course, your learning curve will be short because you're an experienced "detectorist". You couldn't go too far wrong with it in Pro-Zero, Iron disc around 35 (or not if you like to hear it all). Looking forward to hearing how it's going!

With the iron discrimination set at '35', is that with the iron audio on or off? Why not lower on the iron discrimination? Does it make it more chatty and unstable? Is it better to have iron audio on or off while detecting? Why? Lots of questions. Hopefully, I'll be able to figure it all out once I get my hands on the AT Pro and do some testing with it.

I should be out detecting on this gorgeous cool day after all that soaking rain we had last night, but I'm listening for the FedEx truck instead.

Maybe Jim will leave me something worth finding.:detecting:

The Iron Discrimination depends on how trashy the site is and your preferences. Yes, it can get quite chatty, especially at old homesites with lots of nails and rotten iron roofing and such. With ID at 35 and iron audio 'off', it will knock out small iron. When you find a potentially 'good' target, you can flip it on for a moment to see if it sounds like iron (the low tone). Sometimes, when good and bad targets are in the same spot, the signal will get averaged out, hence the suggestion to use only enough iron discrimination to run quietly (so you don't mask out a small gold find).

Some people like to hear it all, and I sometimes run that way, mostly in areas where I've found a few nicer keepers, and hope that there are a couple more hiding amongst the old iron junk. You'll find that some of the bottlecaps and quarter sized rusty iron will sound pretty good, especially after a rainstorm. As you get tuned-in to the machine, sometimes you'll notice that the 'shape' of the sound is different - i.e. coins and good targets up to around 6" will have a ___----___ clean, crisp, small footprint, wheras aluminum often has a 'squelchy', curvier sound. You can use John's suggestion to eliminate some of the rusty iron bottlecaps and such; stomping on them will often disrupt the 'halo' enough that they can be ID'd as iron.

That said, I dig a LOT of junk - I usually 'know' it beforehand, but occasionally find a nice surprise, and I hunt relics a lot, so I don't mind digging a few dozen axe heads to find an old cast iron toy or ??.

It's a sensitive machine and it's up to you to decide whether you mind digging some old denim rivets in search of a little gold earring or prefer to leave the sensitivity at the default or lower, raise the iron disc up and focus on the most-likely good targets. Sometimes, I start out pretty wide open, then, when my brain shuts down due to sensory overload, I back off, heh. You're in for a lot of fun!
