New, and excited!

It's like any other hobby or sport. You start out slow and learn the basics and then you do faster & better at it. Anytime I try to learn something new to me, I adopt the baby attitude. You have to crawl before you can walk and then one day, you're running marathons. GL & HH. I also take into consideration that I'm about 30 years behind the curve compared to other people when it comes to learning something new, but it works for me. I just never had time to metal detect before and now that I'm disable/retired, it gives me a reason to get out of bed in the morning. I'm lucky if I get to go detecting once a week and sometimes it's much longer, but it sure clears the cobwebs and stress out of my head and is great therapy and a good hobby.

You're totally right about it clearing the cobwebs and reducing stress...since I got ill, I've had a hard time doing anything outdoors like I used to, and I'm soooo not an indoor kind of person. One of my most debilitating symptoms is 'heat intolerance', which basically means that when it gets warm, my body can't cope, and I am prone to heatstroke and uber-fast dehydration.

Which is why I haven't been outside in about a week, and it will be at least another week before I can tolerate it...it's been well over 100* and 50% humidity here, so I've been hiding out inside. :) It *is* late summer in Los Angeles area, so it's to be expected; it's just frustrating because I really want to get out to another tot-lot and work on learning my 250.

Hopefully, that will happen in a few weeks...until then, I'm just gonna hide in my house and wonder how I'm supposed to pay the A/C bill. LOL.

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend hunt!

Was only 67 degrees here in northern Michigan. My brother-in-law and I went out for 6 hours today. Still teaching him but it was a very relaxing day for me. Nothing special found, lots of coins and junk.

Orion 42, our low in southeast Ga was 78 this am and the high near 93 and high humidity. Thank goodness there was a nice breeze out of the west early today when I was picking peas.
Herding Cats, if you know some safe places, you might metal detect at night. I bet even in the winter you have some pretty balmy temperatures in LA. That's why I like water hunting, it cools me off.

Shut UP! LOL. I can dream of 67*...we see that temp for about 12 minutes in February. LOL. Consider me quite jealous indeed. And, you guys get great thunderstorms, which are sadly lacking around here. I love a good thunderstorm!

Enjoy the weather for me, all right? I'm just pea-green with envy ROFL...

Fongu, I've considered that. I've got a Newfoundland dog, a St. Bernard dog, and a loudmouth beagle (who believes he's one of the big dogs...). I'm pretty safe in general, if they're with me. They're good company, and they'd make sure their meal ticket (me) is fine. The Saint is still a puppy, but he weighs in at +/- 120, and his size alone is intimidating. The Newf is 3 years, and weighs in at 125...she's only gotten protective of me twice, but both times it was tough to recall her until she was sure I was all right. She takes her job seriously, and that's the way I like it. The beagle just takes notes and cheers the other two on. :)

I'd be safe with them, wherever I went.

I might consider doing some night hunting at that. We've had the same weather as you - including the high humidity...which is very unusual for us here. But it's here for a while, so I may just consider some evening/night hunting...the dogs would love it, I'm sure.

Thanks for the idea...I appreciate it!

Yeah, but we get frozen up solid in the winter while you still get to play.

John

Well yes, there is that. LOL.

Still, I'd give anything to see a good, solid thunderstorm every now and again...shoot, if we get a drop of rain within 400 miles, we go on 'Storm Watch.' Rilly???? LOLOL.

Winters are nice here. But I'd trade the mild winters for not so hot summers any day. I really would (and will be, sooner rather than later). It will be over 100* again today and through the rest of the week...

I want it to rain for a week, slow and steady. Parts of the country has had complaints about too much rain, while Texas is the new Mahave except that our dirt ain't sand....it has become cement. I highly doubt that most any hunter here who lives by using the Leschie hand digger even hunts. There's some, but I will wager it ain't many.

Needless to say, my excitement about getting out to hunt has almost disappeared.

Agreed - we need a long, long rain to even begin to soften the ground out here. And while the Mojave seems to be sand, it's actually hard packed underneath the sand...

It's so dry I'm terrified of the fires this season - once the Santa Ana's come, we're in so much trouble.

And yes, it's really hard to be excited about digging when you can't get the shovel/spade into the ground at all. Sigh.

Better weather will come...we just need to survive this somehow. Even the dogs don't want to go outside - they LOVE being outside, but they run out, do their business, and clamor to get back inside. Bless their hearts...they're just like me. Outside only when necessary; otherwise, staying in the a/c. Thank GOD for a/c, yanno?

Here's hoping for perfect hunting weather for everyone!

We get some nice thunder boomers up here. Not much this year though. One spot we stopped at yesterday was by a small dam on a flooding. We found a few coins, but also found that due to the low rain and low water, a major fish kill happened. We saw over 100 dead fish in the water, some nice bass, pike and panfish in that mess.

John

It is FINALLY starting to cool off...won't be over 100* this next week; and as soon as it gets to be a high of, say, 92-3, I'll be back out learning more about the machine.

It's just been bloody hot, and it's debilitating to me on the best of days, let alone when I'm having a bad day. LOL.

Just thought I'd update the thread.
