Hello all---I just bought my first Minelab, the X-Terra 705. I'm not new to detecting, just took a 40 year break is all. Well, I tried in the backyard but my father had so much hardware and scrap metal out there through the years I kept getting multiple junk hits on relic. So I tried the front yard and got 2 keepers. A 1953D wheatie, and a 1943S war nickel. Neither is in good shape, but to me they are priceless. Can't wait to spread my wings a little farther!

Welcome to the X-Terra club, and good luck.

The X-Terra 705 is a very good detector, just make sure you dig all the hits so that you get an idea of what the TID is for them. Also, dig those targets that scream out, it's either silver or gold.

Hi Misclin, I bought a 705 back in March and used it twice over the entire summer. I know, I know your asking yourself what I did all summer. Maybe someone can help me with this phobia. I am afraid of being arrested for rooting around in the wrong place. I live in NJ and it is chock full of regulations. Im letting my imagination run wild. Any thoughts out there? Im willing to pay for that 45min hour session.

I know how you feel Augustinus430, just hit the internet for contacts for state of NJ and start asking questions. My phobias are a little different. It took me over a week just to put the batteries in and turn it on. The instruction book had me completely intimidated. Plus, I have to be careful as a woman, going out alone especially with an expensive piece of equipment. I do have a good friend into detecting, but he is not always available. I'm originally from NJ, in AZ since 1964. Good luck to you, hope you can get back out there.

Start detecting in your own yard. Then go to your neighbors..... then their neighbors.... then their neighbors.... and keep knocking on doors.
90% of my best finds come from private property, after first obtaining permission. HH Randy

Two good rules of thumb are: # 1.) If there is "any" doubt about hunting a piece of ground, always get permission first. Anything else is trespassing. #2.) If in doubt about what your target may be, dig and find out. Yesterday's 1st lock-solid 40 reading ( normally can slaw or junk on my XT-70 ) turned out to be a small fancy .925 silver ring. Just because 99 times out of a 100 a certain reading is almost always junk, that 100th time may turnout to be something good.

Sounds like me I was detecting in the late 70's then took a 30 year break and now back in. Nice finds you got there.

Welcome to the Xterra family!

The 705 is a awsome detector. Been in England detecting for two weeks
and must say Im getting more and more impressed by that machine .

I use the Etrac as well and I will certainely go for a CTX in rhe near future, but my
705 always gonna stay with me.

Good luck.
Mike

Thanks guys. I finally field tested my new unit and must say that I'm boggled. I kept getting good numbers on foil and rusty cans. I'm still on factory pre-sets until I feel more comfortable, and haven't tried any disc modes yet because I'm afraid to miss something good. To me, even iron can be a good hit, depending on the item. What can I do?

Once you learned the tones on the Xterra you sure dont need to use discrimination.
I NEVER use disc on the 705!! I takes away to much good stuff.

And yes you get good numbers on cans and thicker foil. But I check with pinpoint to see how big the target is and how it sounds like.
A tagets that is near or on the surface often gives a double tone. I dig iron but not much. Most of them are big round iron rings.

I have been digging so much shotgun cartridges in the woods, but you gotta dig them even they are
iffy signals. They jump in at the same numbers as the small hammered coins and other relics.

But when you pass over a good target you can hear it. Its often a solid tone, if not standing om edge or are
a deep target.

I use multitone, and as high sens as possible . Always noice cancel and set a good ground balance. Treshold at a buzz, usually 6-7.And I have been using the 5x10 HF coil, wonderful light coil with very good
performance.

Dont always depend on the numbers, I have been digging good targets at -6 but they have been deep.
Of course iron can be cool relics as well. Big or deep iron often goes in at 48, but that can even BIG silver coins/ relics do ,have I
experienced.

Mike the Swede.

That makes me feel better EOS, I really do need to dig nearly every signal just in case. The spot I was in was literally a large spread out trash dump in the woods with multiple stacked signals every couple of inches. Impossible to work, so I gave up and switched over to panning the creek. Even in prospect mode I was getting hits on trash, so some more field practice is in order somewhere there will be fewer targets (and hopefully better ones).

I went ahead and downloaded the Ebook from Minelab that Digger wrote and will be studying that for awhile. If they endorsed it, it must be some pretty good information. For those who don't know, it is in the Member's section on Minelab's site; it is called 'Understanding Your X-TERRA'. Many thanks to Digger for sharing his expertise in such a way.

Misclin!

What kind of coil do you use most frequent? In such trashy site you work on, have you tried the 5x10 HF or 6"HF? Very good separation.
I was detecting a Victorian dump in England 2 weeks ago,but then I used the E-trac.That machine is really good in trashy sites.Discrimination is great on that machine.Came up with some good finds, post it later.

Mike, I only have the 5x10 that came with my 705 gold pack, and didn't use any disc. It was my first time out with it and I don't know the sounds or numbers yet. The area was very trashy and the dirt extremely hard packed, not the best place for me to start. I need to practice in more suitable locations so I can learn the signals.

Looking forward to your pix.

Micslin!

That coil is just superb.Love it on fields.Like how it really bites on to the target.Maybe not the deepest, but depth is not always the most important thing.
Im gonna post(in couple of minutes) what I found 3 days ago with that constilation you have, gold pack...

And with practice you gonna be comfort with the tones.Sure thing:)

Mike, you living in UK? Just read an article about the MDer there who found the largest Viking haul yet. Fascinating! That's what dreams are made of for sure. Wish it had been me!

Wish I was detecting wise:).But noo...I live in Sweden.

Here shiploads of Viking hoards have been found. And that one in UK was of course of big interest. We Vikings were over there for the silver....

Mike

I'm about 5% Scandinavian, was using Google translator. It did pretty well on what you wrote, but not on amat
