NEL tornado dd coil for X-terra series

According to past posts made by another aftermarket coil manufacturer, Minelab has not released (and likely will not release) the right to market coils for the X-TERRA.

VFLEX technology, including the microchip in the X-TERRA coils, is patented. According to what I found online, Australia has two kinds of patents available: a standard patent with a term of 20 years, or an innovation patent (with a lower threshold for inventiveness) at a maximum term of 8 years. I don't know which applies to VFLEX. But I do know the X-TERRA has been out for less than 6 years. In this world of global high tech, we come face to face with the fact that having the ability to build something is not the same as having the legal right to market it. A bigger question might be, what happens to your X-TERRA warranty if something goes wrong when using (what appears to be) an unlicensed coil? JMHO HH Randy

NEL is not the manufacturer of SEF coils and i really dont know how they made the coil work with X-terra, but it works and that is a great thing. I think it is called European technology, they have the know how.

There are already various bigger coil size requests from customers to the company, so maybe in due time they will produce bigger coils.

If you need the contact information, shoot me with a PM and i will tell you.

They might have bypassed the X-Terra CHIPs somehow? So others have also made requests for bigger coil sizes from NEL. Look, there is a 12x15" sized SEF coil avaiable for the lightweight Fisher F75, so why not a simular size coil for the X-Terra's also?? That simular size coil for X-Terra's would be an answer and solution!! (But I would still prefer a 10x18" lightweight coil as a first size choice for the X-Terra's.) OK, I have sent you a PM for contact information for NEL. Thank you for making us aware of this and for your help.

Also Randy thanks for your input.

It's not like we haven't been asking for some different coils. However the cost for them have been rising so I don't think I'll be getting anything new in the future unless someone comes up with a less expensive ones. I think that the cost of the coils is ridiculous and if it takes some competition to bring the price down with more options I welcome it.

I have been watching this post with a great deal of interest. The VFLEX technology is the patented property of Minelab. I can not imagine Minelab allowing anyone to infringe upon their Paten. I, like Randy, am sure that if you purchase (and I question that there is such a coil) one of these coils and it damages your X-Terra you will be out of luck as far as warranty goes. HH TomB

does anyone know where the coil is made? It sounds like the man was Russian. If so, I don't know if I would trust this coil not to permanently screw up my 705. It might void the warrenty on it. when he switched control boxes and he was not getting a signal, well that convinced me to stay away. How about we all just push Minelab to make a larger coil until they are sick of hearing from us and make it. HaHa. I would not trust anything of quality coming out of Russia except an AK-47.

They are made in Ukraine and those coils in the video are not the final product, only a prototype to show that they work with x-terra.

This text i took from their homepage with a help of translator:

The joint venture NEL (trademark NEL), was founded in 2009.

We are proud that our company has become a vivid example of the possibility of successful cooperation of the Ukrainian business and American scientific and technological developments.

The joint venture NEL - the largest manufacturer of coils for all types of metal detectors in the former CIS.

Today, products NEL leader among manufacturers of coils for metal. The high level of professionalism of the staff, supplemented by features of advanced technologies and modern equipment - a key to successful rapid development of our company in the future.

Now it would be nice if Minelab would wake up and make one that would be comparable with our Exterra's for a reasonable price and not so expensive. The third video was interesting if it was legit.

Seems legit as far as i can see and the NEL tornado 12x13" dd coil seems to have much better depth than the X-terra 10,5" dd coil.:smoke:

I too would love a 15" or larger lightweight Xterra coil.

re. the NEL....
I wonder how fair that test was (video3)....no proof as to each Sens. setting was shown for each coil.
(ie. the new coil may have been at 29 and the Minelab at 15 ? )...just asking
hope I am wrong- but to me a scientific comparison shows settings are the same for each test item.

They used a X-terra 30 and the sensitivity was at max 10/10.:)

Hi again thanks for the answer re. the Sens. must of missed that bit (put it down to painkillers due to a recent operation)

Minelab tells me they are aware of these coils
they are UN AUTHORISED
Does that make the NEL a breach of their international patent ?

Possibly good luck / fast talking may be required to get Minelab to repair an X-Terra if it should break down whilst using one of these NEL's

This is just my opinion....
I know we all want a bigger coil or 2 but IMHO we should not be participating in what could be seen as an act of business piracy
happy swinging good people

There has been many that have been asking Minlab for one but it seams that they are not listening.
Maybe they will finely make one better than the one shown.

Hah, dont bet your money on it. It is called business strategy, better coils could actually make the X-terra too good for its own good.:ban:

Minelab engineered, designed and built the VFLEX platform used on the X-TERRA. As such, every coil they design for use with the X-TERRA must meet very stringent quality standards. For example, each X-TERRA coil must maintain operational stability while maximizing sensitivity, provide precise parameters for manual, auto and tracking ground balance capabilities, operate at optimum Noise Cancel levels, process the receive signal information for accurate TID, replicate the notch segment consistency of the current coils and probably a hundred other things that are way beyond my comprehension. Although I find it entertaining, viewing short YouTube videos of an aftermarket X-TERRA coil "beeping" on deep targets does not satisfy my "need to know" that these coils will meet those same quality standards.

A couple years ago, someone listed a used X-TERRA 70, a MF 10.5 DD and two "large Pro Style coils" on a detector forum's Classifeds. The listing stated one was a MF version and the other a HF version. Since they looked like the E-TRAC Pro DD coil, I wrote him suggesting they were not X-TERRA coils. He responded that they were "prototype" X-TERRA coils and were not commercially available. Last fall, I saw an 8-inch DD X-TERRA coil listed on ebay. It appeared to be similar to the design of the Minelab TS800 coil used on other models of Minelabs. I asked the seller if he was sure it was for the X-TERRA and he told me it was a "prototype" that was not commercially available. Here is my point......... those three coils suggest to me that, not only is Minelab listening, they're working at it. A reputable OEM has far more to lose (long-term) by selling an accessory coil that doesn't meet their (and our) expectations, than an aftermarket coil manufacturer might gain, short-term. If Minelab chose to not make those particular "prototypes" commercially available at that time, I am inclined to think there was a good reason. But it also tells me that they are listening and are making an effort to enhance the current coil selection. JMHO HH Randy

A very wild guess at best Finder82.

Maybe it is ,but still you got to wonder why after all this time and after many request, they have not made any new coils available for the X-terra.:poke:

Probably will make one only they will just make it only compatible with a new model so you have to upgrade -- Na - that's not gonna happen with me but if it compatible with my X70 then it would be a possibility but only if the kept (not gonna happen) the price down because I have just too muck money stuck in the coils I have now an I just can't see getting another coil on the speculation I might just find that special find -- Na!

The lack of a bigger/better coil is what made me switch to an Explorer II. My finds have increased quite a bit but I can't hunt near as long as I could with my 70.
I did hold onto the 70 in case they did come out with a newer coil option so I hope it happens.
