needing help deciding

in my opinion there are better metered detectors than the cortez, however it DOES have a lifetime warranty ,AND that is worth considering
when contemplating a purchase..what it does NOT have is the ability to ground balance in the discriminate mode, which CAN and often DOES
effect depth, and the consequences of this is possibly walking over some nice targets...again,this is MY opinion, but for the money tesoro "gets"
for this unit new,it is difficult to understand why they didn't design it to g.b in the discriminate mode...sven has a solid tip in that if you are truly wanting a cortez
then make the effort to locate one "used"..in good condition,of course...in MY view, the "value" is there in the cortez..used!..best of luck in whatever you decide!

well i am having a prob there, where i live i can't get the cortes right now they are out of stock and i can't find any used ones for sale....it doesn't reflect on a machine that's not liked......i am not a %100 sold on anything at this moment...still listening to all the great advice i am getting from all you guys...keep in coming guys i appreciate and read everyone's opinion...this is how i am going to make a well informed decision....one thing no one has talked about is accessories...shovels,pick axes, sand scoops.....any opinion on these?..i just bought a book on amazon.ca called "Metal Detecting for the Beginner", anyone have?

My personal choicers are the Lesche digging tool. Garret has a new pinpointer probe called Pro Pointer. It is great!!

Hi Findingmyway; Simple pointer.OnThe Auto Ground Balance. It is a MUST. The better the Discrimination the better. Most mid range priiced deecors do a good job on both. Also Whites backs their detectors 100% regardless of prior ownership.I have a Whites Eagle 2 SL from 1989.They still back it.
POINTER: Just make sure the detector has been previously registered for Warranty. How to do that : Get the detectors Serial Number, Make and Model and call the Companeis Repair Dept. They will tell you on the spot ok.It is that simple.!!! Biggest pointer I can give you is "KEEP IT SIMPLE."

SIMPLE GUIDE LINES.:
1). Auto Ground Balance = MUST
2). Good Discrimination.
3). An Easy, Accurate Meter

On Accessories.:

1). Get the "BEST" Headphones you can get. You can't find what you can't hear.!!!!
2). Letche Digging tool.
3). A good Pointer Probe.
4). A "SPADE" type shovel. Waist High. = Saves a lot of backache ok.

Last : Learn how to dig a hole "PROPERLY" Anyone can dig a hole. But trick is to be able to dig a hole and not leave a trace when your done. I can and have dug holes on "manicured" lawns and never left a trace ok. Now its your turn. Also. I don't care where you are at; In the woods,on construction sites or your own back yard. FILL YOUR HOLES OK. Check out the Treasure Hunters Code Of Ethics. We really do follow them ok. I've "NEVER" dug a hole I haven't filled in 39 years. With that all said. Best Wishes. My choice for you : Whites MXT or Fisher F75. PEACE:RONB
Now stop talking and start finding.!!!!! :super:

lesche digger!..most guys use this tool!..that should tell you all you need to know!
also.i mentioned the cz-70,however, a f-75 will also be a great detector for you too!..very lightweight,and a depth demon!

findingmyway, maybe you just asked a rhetorical question, but if you are thinking of buying a $1000-2000 detector as a newbie - I would suggest reconsidering!

The top of the line detectors have a longer learning curve, one of the biggest mistakes newcomers to this hobby make (to borrow from Bill Revis - "Uncle Willly", longtime expert detectorist and moderator of the Garrett forum) is to start off with too much detector. There's a lot to learn when you are new to the hobby, just in the art of detecting and retrieving targets. Adding a complicated detector into the mix isn't the best of ideas.

Despite the advice given above, if your area's soil is not highly mineralized a preset ground balance should be OK. If you are not sure about the soil in your area, check with your local MD club. Or mention your area here and someone should be able to tell you about your soil. Entry level detectors from all the major manufacturers are good units. The Ace 250, Fisher F2, Tesoro Silver UMax or Compadre are good entry level detectors. Basic units will find you coins down to about 5-6" and bigger relics deeper than that. If you stick with the hobby and decide to move up, you'll be able to sell your used unit and get most of your money back. If you decide detecting isn't for you, you'll still be able to sell the detector and get most of your money back.

As far as warranties go, research it. Some like Garrett's, Whites and Minelab are two years and transferable. First Texas (Fisher, Teknetics and Bounty Hunter) is five years and not transferable. Tesoro is lifetime and technically not transferable, but usually they will fix your detector for free whether you are the original owner or not.

The Garrett Propointer is well worth it too. It's not new anymore - it's been out for close to two years now and everyone who uses one sings its' praises. A pinpointer will make detecting a lot easier, and help you to make clean, unnoticable retrievals.

Also, Monte is a detecting guru and knows his stuff - when he gives advice, you can bet it's solid.

Whatever you decide, good luck!

Hi findingmyway; Marcomo gave you solid advice. If your a newbie, its ok; BE ONE. Don't over reach. I think its called "killing ants with Atomic bombs." Theres no need. My biggest pointer on this hobby is: If your not having fun, hang it up.!!!!! I sincerely mean that. After 39 years I'm still haaving a blast ok. Just one thing is marcomo said that Whites is only for 2 years and not transferable. I'm selling my 1989 Whites Eagle 2 SL I sent it every year to be tuned up and they "ALWAYS" honored the Warranty. I don't know if they changed it but I don't think so ok.By the way Marcomo : Thanks for giving him that solid input. Its a true credit to our hobby.Way to go. PEACE:RONB

Now findingmyway; Start finding treasures ok.!!!!!

I am listening to everyone's advice,i'm just asking all the questions so i can make a good decision...I appreciate all the great advice from each of you all...this is how i do my decision making, just keep asking all i can until i am satisfied I can make the right choice ...

fisher l.t.d.,or teknetics t2 l.t.d.,or standard fisher f-75,or omega 8000.
all of these detectors have lightening fast micro-processors in them which allows you to "separate"adjacent targets, and STILL get phenominal
depth.unless you have the time to do quality research, then the sites you will hunt will be 'loaded" with modern day "crap",and these detectors excel at
finding good targets from amongst the junk!..again!..make no mistake, you will encounter a lot of trash in the ground at virtually every site you take a detector to
and to "avoid" becoming disenchanted with the hobby, you NEED these detectors!..

(h.h!)
j.t.

in addendum!.don't be concerned about learning these detectors!..yes!..they do take time to learn, with the exception of the teknetics omega 8000,
however,IF you are dedicated to the pursuit of this hobby, then like everything else in life, you WILL find a way!

regards!

Apologies if I misspoke on the Whites warranty. I hate to admit it but I didn't do my research...:heh:

:whites:Still backing a 1989 detector under warranty is impressive!

Thanks for the kind words, Ron. And your advice about learning to make unnoticable retrievals is very important for the hobby in general and for anyone specifically.

People will pay attention to how you leave the ground.

Hi marcomo; Thanks. Hey findingmyway; have you decided yet??????? Just curious. I do understand that you want all the info you can get bt after a while you get over saturated with info.. Like me and marcomo said just keep it simple ok. PEACE:RONB

right now i am really looking at the gerrett's infinium...it's simple yet powerful.....i know some have said don't go to high your first one...but here is my thinking...this is a powerful unit,it will net more goodies,it's a very simple unit to work has everything you have all said to make sure i get ...this way i am not upgrading anytime soon..i have the chance now to buy it cash wise.my daughter is paying half for fathers days..she is a good girl very proud of her.....i know i have changed my mind a few times but this is how i do things..drives my kids nuts at times...ya i am a single father of 2 great kids...and again i can't say enough for all your help and guidance, each one of you...i will for sure be on here celebrating any finds...but only thing i have to wait till fathers day to get it.....So let me know what you guys think?.

The Garrett Infinium very good unit but not for the faint of heart. Long learning curve.

I have suggested he call and visit the two dealers near his home. They are very reputable and been around a long long time. Check out all the brands, models, features and get a hands on experience.
He may choose a detector other than what everyone is suggesting or reading about. :wiggle:
