Need help with this piece...

I found this item in a yard a couple days ago and it appears to be brass.
I have been told it is a sword pommel by a couple different people.
Thought I would post on this forum to see what you all had to say about it.
If it is a pommel, I do not see how it would mount to the handle.
I thought a pommel was like a cap and open on one end to slip over something.
There was some activity at this site in 1865.. the Union Calvary burnt a train depot down right across the road from where I found this piece.
Any help is much appreciated.

I agree it does look similar, but how this would mount has me stumped.

It’s a Whatzit. Found a box load of them myself. All different sizes and shapes. Still and interesting good find.

Picture confused here......
Which end is the hole in? In the following pic its obviously not the pointed end. Larger end where your thumb is does appear to match dimensions of pic with hole. ?????

In the second photo, the hole is on the bottom close to my thumb.
