My wife says that the people on this forum are a bunch of MDing fanatics.

I just wanted to share the nice things she says about us.
I was trying to get in contact with some locals on the MDer's they use in this soil here in W.Va. Some distant family members and people I have contacted that had MDer's don't know anything about MDing. I won't mention what their MDer's are, you might find them at Harbor Freight. Some didn't know what they had.
I wanted somebody that can talk the talk and walk the walk. It is like everyone I meet around here is in MDer 101. One man with a DFX said it is so hard to learn he doesn't use it any more. He wanted to check out radio shack and see if they had an easier MDer that he could use. I was watching a man spend 15 minuets on one target. A guy sitting on the bench was watching me and said that everyone is not a professional like you are. I drove 20 miles to the nearest MDer dealer. He had 3 MDer's in a gun cabinet. I don't know why he was selling them. He couldn't talk the talk. He had nothing else in stock, but said he can order me what I wanted. I told my wife," Why can't I meet someone in person like the people on the forum." That is when she said that we all are a bunch of fanatics.
I have been spending hours marking the old schools on topo maps.
When we take trips in the car, I drive different roads going home to check out new MDing sites.
I make sure the MDer is in the car we are driving. When opportunity knocks, I want to be ready.
When friends come over, I show them all the great stuff I have found.
I have every major catalogue on MDer's with dvd's. So what if I watch them over and over.
When she gets the mail I ask if there is any MDing type mail for me. (like Kellyco's big news paper with ALL the lasted products) I like that one. I can compare the stats on all the MDer's.
What is not normal?

That's very normal. I find that the non detecting people are the one's that are abnormal. But I sure don't want all the abnormal people buying detectors!!! Let them stay on the couch..............
I don't even know if all that made sense? Heck maybe I'm the abnormal one? Just because my detector rides shot gun in my truck or that I'll leave the window cracked some so it won't get hot. Isn't that normal? My detector has never once told me to paint the house or mow the grass. Oh yes, I love my detector. I'm so sorry for scratching you coil. I'm sorry for sometimes grabbing my fishing pole instead of you. Please forgive me! Take me back! I'll do better this time!
Sincerely, Kenny

You are in what is called "the Honeymoon Phase," John. It happens to everyone who embraces and is consumed by a passion.

Detectorists are a very unique and small part of the population. Fanatics to the core, they revel in the fact that very few have the patience or willingness to learn the technology and its best use. They see in great detail what others fail to even notice.

Like don Quixote, we tilt at our windmills and go on our way, happy and content. I'm glad your with us, Old Friend.

Phew, boy that's a relief, I thought it was only us Aussies who were fanatical like that. You blokes over there have all your priorities set out right just the same as we have over here also.:detecting:

Other people who aren't Metal Detectorists don't understand us , but then again, we don't always understand what makes them tick either, but at least we're sane!!!!!:jump:

limpy:rofl:

As I'm getting swamped by the Usual migration North for the winter! There are a ton of people travelling through town lately who are armed to the teeth with metal detectors. I went to the local show ground last week to do some detecting, only to hear a voice come over my shoulder, that it had already been detected. I met the culprit a half hour later. He was camping there and had only left to detect the Race course (and found nothing:lol:) All he does, is travel and detect. He still doesn't know his machine very well, so I was able to show him a few things, but he has still found around $6000 in the last 10 months. That's about as long as he has been in the hobby.
At work yesterday, a work mate asked me if I was detecting at a certain location. I said no and he told me that it was in fact a group of people detecting at this one spot! How depressing to hear while your still at work.
I did manage a few hours today for just over $13 with the Ace, and due to a lack of sheep, we've got Monday off, so guess what I'll be doing.
Are we addicted. I think not. Just unpleasant people to be around when we can't do our thing. Or worse, when someone Else breezes into to town, and beat's you to all the good stuff, while your fending the wolf from the door! Don't these people care that the next major town is a hundred miles away.:nopity:
Signed
Frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 people that don't know their detectors can still play havoc with our battery money. They run the disc all the way up to cherry pick dimes, quarters and halves. Then the pro's have to go behind them and dig the tabs, foil and zincs. We also have to cover their holes as they are just passing through town and don't care. I like to promote the hobby but I don't want everyone to have a detector. Am I just selfish???

fanatic....:yikes:

I resemble that remark!:detecting:

Nope, and you said it well. Fortunately, the folks you describe rarely last long...

No, I hate it that everybody and their dog has one. :) I liked the old days when a guy with a beeper was a rare sight.
