my test garden

Well-known member
so after reading a the post about sensitivity and FE numbers I decided to go outside and run a few tests of my own. what I found out is SHOCKING to me!
I dug 4 holes all approx 6"deep, and used all silver coins...the ground is free of iron in this location. coins were buried three feet apart.
first hole mercury dime on it's side: stock coin program auto sens +3 not reading the dime whatsoever from any direction switch to manual sens on 28 and get a low chirp and null , switch to quick mask open screen and there is the squeel but is reading 35-44, 34-45 in both manual and auto sens.????????
second hole mercury dime flat: same settings as above, not registering in stock coin mode, switch to quick mask open screen and hit 5-38 to 11-43??????????
third hole washington quarter on it's side: nice strong high pitch in auto +3 stock coin mode reading 11-44 to 12-45
fourth hole washington quarter flat: Nice strong high pitch in auto +3 stock coin mode reading 12-45 to 12-47

so why is my E-trac not picking up the silver dimes at 6" in the stock coin program but hit's them in open screen?How many have I missed in the last month???? I dig clad dimes all the time that hit 12-44 or 12-45 at way deeper than 6" any thoughts?

the thought occurs that if you are getting clad down to those depth levels,then maybe you are just not getting your coil over the silver!
if it finds clad at depth,it will find silver too!..just sayin'

yeh I understand that..the problem is when I tested the silver dimes they did not register, so how many have I swung over and missed? why would they not register in the stock coin program??

Based on the fact that you say that they're ALL SILVER....ie the dime is 1916 to 1945 type...

Then you must re-check the area you've buried them in.

If the coin is OK...regardless of its orientation.....the 34/35 Fe reading tells you clearly that you HAVE NOT PROPERLY PRE CHECKED FOR IRON CRAP IN THE SOIL....

Let's re-check that target.......dig it up.....check 'in-air' its numbers......Flat and edge on, just for reference sake.

Then go and sort out the iron crap......not just the hole you dig, but also the spoil from the hole....thoroughly.

before I buried them I ran the MD over the area in all metal mode no disc and found the area to be clear. I did dig that merc up out of curiousity and was at 6" .NO iron at all in or near that hole acording to the E-trac in open screen. air tests were reading 11-44to 12-45 so why wouldn't it read in stock coin mode through 6" of dirt? I would have never even noticed it if I had not switched to my open screen quick mask. wierd...just wierd. even the other merc that's still out there would not read in stock coin mode, but would in open screen quick mask, How do I explain that? thanks for the help this sort of has me confused all over again, I thought I was getting the hang of the E-trac now I am on the learning curve again.
this may explain why I have 87 wheats and only 5 silver dimes. if they are being nulled out in the stock coin program I don't hear them...but with no discrimination they sing out loud and clear...:shrug:

Try Andy S. coin program once, I found a wheat would not hit at 8" with the stock program ( in my coin garden) and hit hard with andy"s.

Review facts:-

(1) stock coin program auto sens +3 not reading the dime whatsoever from any direction.

Review...Stock coin MODE....Auto sense mode 19....+3 OK

Question for you.......What maximum depth do you think this set-up will give you ON A FLAT Merc ?????

Answer...depending on soil and your efficiency.....a MAX of SEVEN inches possibly.

ONE ITS SIDE.....that's anybodies guess.......Certainly NOT seven inches. (Which is the true range if you add the stand off of say an inch, as well as actual in-soil depth)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[size=x-large]You have clearly told US that you have IRON over the on-its-side-Merc.......Why can't you realise that?
Forget about the original clear ground scan for iron....
you can reveal (expose..dig up...etc) a previously undetectable iron target AFTER you've dug the hole.
Forget all the other history.....and bury that Merc at FOUR inches ...on it's side.
Just Remember...you will then only be able to detect it confidently WHEN YOU SWEEP ACROSS THE COIN...not along.
An on-its-side coin will not be detected as depply as its FLAT counter-part. (Dime...Diam/Thick ratio about 12:1)
IT WILL ALSO BE ABOUT FOUR OR FIVE INCHES OFF SET from its ACTUAL POSITION. !!!!!!!!!!"!
well OK I guess I HAVE IRON...anyway..what you are telling me is I can only read a silver dime at 4" with my E-trac? when I am pulling clad dimes out at 8" to 10" with the same settings? I don't know I am more confused now than before.
My ace250 hit silver dimes at 8" to 10" all last year, I was just wondering when I tested why I wasn't getting any signal at 6" in the stock coin program???? I just went out with my ACE250 on 3 bars of sens. and it found both dimes...picked up the E-trac in the stock coin program with auto sens+3 (running about 22ish)and running goes4evers settings.. and it would not see the dimes...that is what this post is all about...why isn';t the E-trac seeing these dimes?what am I doing wrong when a $200 MD can find them and a $1500 can't.
Are you saying the coins null in the stock coin program or you're getting nothing (no null and no signal)? I thought I read that when you opened quick mask you got a 35-44, 34-45. The stock coin program has that discriminated out. I've had silver coins on edge that read as low as FE 26, but never in the 30's. Since you air tested them and the readings were normal, it must be a combination of the coin being on edge and the mineralization of the soil.
it's difficult to say,but one possibility is that maybe the ones (if) you swung a coil over
could have been on edge?...just sayin'
check with minelab! tell 'em you suspect a defective detector!
just sayin'
I've swung over a spot in one direction, and nothing, then in another direction, and barely caught a faint squeak, and the Barber dime was more than 6 inches down. Was the soil packed back tightly? Did you attempt to swing over the hole from multiple directions?
But why does the ace find them? I am new at the etrac as well and I am confused. Could there be wrap around ? Do you have co 1 and 2 lines disc. out?
I keep the FE 01 line open as silver dollars hit on 01. Normally with a CO between 41 - 46. I think the stock coin program has CO 49 and 50 disc out to eliminate the wrap around affect. I opened it up because big silver can bounce up in to that range.
Try this:
Take the plug out and run a strong magnet all around in the hole and the plug. But I would suspect there is some rust from a nail left in the plug. It doesn't take much to disrupt the signal coming back to the machine. I'd bet the rust is in the plug above the dime, not below.
Just to prove it to yourself break the plug apart and scan with the magnet and see what comes up.
This is a true masking situation at its best.
It is obvious that the area is contaminated with some iron in some form.And on a side note,if you have been digging dimes at 10" with your Ace 250 you better hang on to that unit.:hot:
yes it is my backup and I run a 10x14DD coil on it. it's a great machine.
OK Now rust in the hole makes sense to me,but I cannot visually see any. before I buried the coins I scanned the whole area with the E-trac open screen and there was no iron beeps or nulls. when scanning over the holes with the two mercs in the stock coin program I can still hear the threshold, so NO null...swinging from all directions there is no tones at all. if I air test at 6" it screams out loudly. and like I posted before why would the ace250 see the dimes with no problem and the E-trac can't? the ace doesn't even bounce to the iron and back..just solid .10 signal.
maybe I have a setting wrong or something....my point is, I don't want to be missing out on any silver dimes!
once again
my settings:
Goes4evers settings, sens is running about 22 in auto+3 what am I missing or overlooking?
I know it's not the machine..it's me , the ground or both...I just have to figure it out. thanks again for the input.
Thanks Gunwolf for confirming why many of us choose manual and not auto
Also there are some points you bring up that are certainly worth thinking about
if you would do me the favor of next time we hunt together I will bring a few silver dimes and we can side by side compare your readings to mine...this will help me alot .
