My Road Trip Update

Mason Jarr

New member
I'm about 1/3, distance wise, on my 6000 mile quest for a Large Cent. I am now in Rantoul, IL and into what I'm considering the region where a large cent is feasibly possible. On Monday I'll be in Indiana to hunt with Shawn. Sometime later next week I'm hoping to hook up with Tony (Bell-Two) in Ohio for a day hunt. I'm planning to do a detailed write-up (I'm keeping a journal) with photos after my trip is done in early June. Today was the 9th day I've been on the road and so far I have 16 silvers, 6 IHs, 1 Buffalo and a handful of Wheaties. Those totals include two semi-key date coins: a 1913S Barber dime and a 1914D Wheat. I also got to spend a day hunting with PastorBob near Omaha. Sorry, no pics for now. I don't have photo editing capability and my Nikon won't shoot a small enough file to upload on here.

Look forward to your arrival in New York

It sounds like you're doing pretty good so far. I sure hope you find that large cent you're after. Good luck and be safe. Joe

Thanks. Gary, I'm also looking forward to hunting with you up there. This side of the country is much older than anything I see out west. Was in Keokuk, IA yesterday and I think every house there is older than the oldest house where I live.

Glad you have done so well so far!

What a cool journey! I hope you're video recording it too, you're doing something I bet most everyone would love to do, thanks for posting and updating us! I hope you get some LC's!

Wow... Sounds like a great trip so far... Your finds sound like it at least... Videos and pictures will be nice to see when you finish... Hope you find the large cent too.

You will probably do best knocking on doors at old farm houses. Or find some other near virgin territory. LCs hit like big silver and if some one swung a coil over it they probably dug it. We find them here in Southern Wisconsin, but it is not an every day kind of find.

Chris

Thanks for the replies! Got my first ever Seated today. An 1877 dime. Very worn, but the date is plain. More than I could have ever expected on this trip for sure.

Wtg!

Ha ha. No need to be jealous. Come meet up with me and you can ride the rest of the way. It'll give me someone to talk to. I don't mind sharing the finds.

Congrats on finding the seated dime! Curious where that was found? Would be cool to put together a coin map of the USA when you're done. Glad you're having a good time making friends and finds! What a great way to see the country! From the top and underneath! GL & HH

Got the seated dime in Indiana. Today my host pulled another one (1876), an 1865 two-center and a holed copper that I think will turn out to be an early 1800s Half Cent....probably Classic Head variety. It's pretty rough though. I got a semi-key IH, 1872.

Thanks for the update and info Mason Jar! Man how cool it would be to find old coins like the ones you are encountering! My oldest so far is a 1916 Mercury Dime here in Portland OR. Does not seem to be the old coinage in my area. Silver is very hard to come by too! I've worked my fanny off for 13 silver coins in the last year!

Mason Jarr, If you crossed the bridge into Illinois from Keokuk you were in Hamilton, Il. Thats where I live. I wished I would have seen your post sooner we could have hooked up for a hunt. Best of luck on your quest. :detecting:
