My hand at relic hunting

Larry (IL)

Well-known member
JR and Downdeep got me going on relic hunting so I took the day off and went to a Civil War camp and prison here in Illinois. This field has been hunted hard for the past 20 years or more but I always seem to come away with something and today was not the exception. I even got a couple of new things that maybe you relic pros can help me ID. One is the plate with four rivets in the lower right and the other is the pistol teardrop bullet right above it. I found a good collection of .58 three ringers, dropped, carved, smashed, chewed and impact as well as a nice assortment of smaller caliber. In the upper right is a Civil War era merchandising token that is pretty well shot, maybe I will be able to read it tomorrow and below that is a GS button with an intact back which is pretty unusual for this field. They are usually rusted off but this one seems to be a brass back with some writing. I will try to see what it says tomorrow as well. I used my regular modified Hi Pro program.

The plate thing is called a bat wing. I am not 100% sure but believe they came off of a sword scabard belt? can't remember. never found one yet! The bullet is familiar, though I've not found one like that yet either..and I forget the name of it. Have fun looking here, a friend of mines website: http://www.baymediapro.com/collection/bullet_search.asp

great finds overall!! nice job!

That is a good days relic hunt Larry. Nice bat wing! I don't have my bullet books with me, but will look it up when I get back.

I looked Batwing up and it seems to be a Union keeper on a carbine sling. It must match up somehow with the buckle. Dummy me, I washed most of the green patina off of it.

Thats what it was..the sling. lol
NO, don't wash off the green!! Its supposed to be there.. like the white on a bullet. Besides, it is St Pattys day! :clapping:

I'll replace that green with my "green" with envy trip then! Nice hunt Larry. Top of the evening to ya!

Nice finds Larry, That bullet is a 36 cal St Louis Arsenal The two brass casings at the bottom look like they could be to a Henry rifle see if they have an H stamped on the base and will also have 2 firing pin marks if they were fired ,kind of hard to tell the size by the pic . They would be .44 cal

Thanks for the bullet ID Andy, the casings are on the smaller side, my guess is .25. They seem to match up to the bullet left of the .36.

Hi Larry, looks like you did ok,nice mix of stuff....and a token...hope you can read it! Getting out today? I'm off. H.H.

Nice job. What program(s) did you run ? CCH

I used the Modified Hi Pro that is on your detector EJ, just turn on, ground balance and hunt

I might get out.......... Nancy went to the Dr. and I'm cleaning house, (break time) and dog sitting. Give me a call later if you want to get together.

OK Larry, I told you to wait for me to get home. I'm sure sure there are some crappy sites you could be hunting. Man you did good.
