My GTAx 550 doesn't read gold when placed it into a 2" hole, why?

Hey all,

I've been out swinging alot in the last couple weeks and earning my share of clad, trash with the occasional silver mixed in but haven't found any gold as of yet. I know it's not always the easiest to find so I wanted to test out my machine with some different silver & gold to learn the sounds. I tried it on top of the ground first and the silver hit strong like an alarm and the same when it was in the ground. I put the gold on top the ground and the gold barely made a sound and read as foil. I had the machine 2 inches above the target which to me I thought it would ring true and loud like silver. So next I put the gold into the ground and started to swing above first quickly then slow but no sound, why? The only time I could hear anything was when I used the pinpoint option, but if I didn't know it was there I would have never knew at all.

So my question is why does my machine pick up silver load and clear, but when it comes to gold it truly reads at a sub par level. Please give me some advice I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Ever wonder why gold detectors run at a much higher operating frequency than standard coin and hobby detectors? Now you know.
Plus due to an effect known as " Metallurgical Phenomenon" any freshly buried metal is difficult or impossible to detect. Gold also falls into the same conductive range as foil.

I appreciate the insight and info passed on as your experience is much vaster then my own of this hobby so thank you for your help I sincerely am greatful.

The GTAx 550 has several search modes. Have you tested in All metal mode as well? If gold is not detected in a 2" hole I think you discriminated it out. Try to set the disk to minimum and see what happens. I do not own this detector but even this detector doesn't use the "higher" 15 KHz search frequency it should detect gold better.

I've started us "All metal mode" a few weeks ago after much reading and watching of video's informing me that it's better to rely on sound than the screen. The screen was convenient but I've now learnt my shortfall with gold reading registers as foil, so chalk one up for inexperience. I've reset my machine to start from scratch but had to turn the volume down as the constant buzzing was to much for these for ears. Question, is the volume meant to be turned up to here this constant sound? Either way all the help your providing me will not be wasted that I can promise.

Most recommend that you have the volume just loud enough to hear, and it should be a constant tone so you can hear slight variations in the tone, as you pass the coil over a target.
