My first silver with the V

Downdeep

New member
I haven't been doing any hunting do to the heat of summer and my relic fields are all grown up. However this morning I was visiting my mother at the farm I grew up at and happened to have the detector in the truck. Sometimes I putter around the yard but today I decided to brave the heat and bugs and take a 10 minute walk back into the woods that border behind the property. I took the hike back to where a spring head comes out of the ground having recently heard a rumor that this area had been a picnic area way back. Oddly I've always thought about detecting there but this new information spurred me into actually trying. I dug a lot of shotgun shell ends and modern rifle casings. I did find a late 1800's early 1900's flat button. Then I got a perfect signal on a dime and went to digging. Shortly after I pulled a nice 1913 Merc out of the ground, still in a small piece of cloth that I'm guessing was a small coin purse. Beautiful I thought! Put it in my pouch and walked about 10 feet to another flawless dime signal. Dug down and pulled out a 1903 Barber! To date, this is my oldest silver and the most I've found at one time. Below is a picture...included are the large cents I found a few weeks back. On the left is my 1831 and the right my 1820.

Very nice finds sir. but your Merc isn't a 1913. Not sure if you made a typo or if it's hard to see, but I would look again, it could be a really attractive date.

If I hunted 10 minutes, and found two silvers, I would be parking a camper back there.

:beers: Hope you find many more.

Awesome Downdeep! I hope you reswept your first hole where you found the merc?

Excellent hunt and finds congratulations!!!!!!!

Thank you for posting them.

I found them pretty quickly, but spent about another hour there to no avail. Going back this morning.

I didn't do research on the mercs, the top of the number just looked like a three to me. I see they started them in 1916. Ooops! :detecting:

Here is a closeup of the the coin.

and one from ebay with a 7 which is the only other number I think that should look like that. A 2 wouldn't fit the year and it doesn't look right for a 9 either. Do they look different to anyone else?

Nice finds. Now you'll need to back there and work it hard...I bet there are more goodies in there for you!

When I click on your photo, then zoom in 400%. It does appear that it is a 7. Of the 4 possible dates 16,17,18, & 19, the 17 is the only one flat across the top. Hope there is a D on the back. Maybe her older sister is hiding out there still!!!

:thumbdown:Nope, no D. or if there was, it was worn off. Looks like we'll call it a 1917 then.... :clapping: Still a good enough find to make me happy!

Spent 2 more hours back there this morning and only found more shotgun shell ends and rifle casings. Maybe it wasn't a picnic ground and it was coincidence. Either way, I found 'em!
