My First Post Lots of Q

Thanks for the constructive criticism Monte. I need all the help I can get. I thank you for responding to all my questions as several people have helped me already. I went to sweethome today and went to Oregon Prospecting and The factory as well. We spent some time in the museum it was pretty cool. I got some good deals and purchased items from both places. I ended up getting the 300 with the 12" spider coil. I purchased the accessory kit and I wanted to tell everyone Mary at the factory told me they forgot to add a photo of the 6 x 10 DD and she gave it to me as the coil and I think I will be happy with that. She gave me an additional lower rod so I did not have to change the head only every time. I purchased a small shovel cutter tool and a book called the mxt edge by Jeff Foster. Mary said it was worth having. I purchased the mxt300 and the kit from Rita at the Oregon Prospecting store and also bought two coil covers for the coils and an extra battery pack. Saved a lot of money all these items cost me under $950. The Webb Site wanted $899.00 for the MXT300 by itself.

Thanks Bob for all your help. I hope you read my response to Monte. I appreciate what I learned from him as well. By the way I thought I read on one of your posts that you had an mxt and a 6x10DD and told me that was a good combo. I ended up with that coil and a stock spider 12" coil. When I got home I read a little then fell asleep reading in the chair. I woke up and went outside in the yard. I had the big coil on and set it up with the gain at the triangle like they said. It went crazy and fluctuated between 10 cents,25 cents 50 cents overload, and went beserc but I turned the gain down some and it got a little better but not much. I dug two targets and found my first one which was a hot wheels car from 1975 and a pair of womens glasses in the second hole. The glasses were laying near the top and at first when I dug the hole I saw a piece of glass I took a plug of grass out and laid it beside the hole and put the coil over the hole again and nothing so I put it over the plug of grass and it went crazy. I tore it apart and pulled out the glasses and another lens. they were smashed pretty bad kind of funny. I quit cause it was starting to get dark. I never got it set right but I think tomorrow I will set the gain on about 3 and work my way up from there 9 was way too bad. I think there was too much junk in my yard too so I am going to try the 6x10DD tomorrow. Thanks for all the links too. I have an old GPS that is portable but I never really learned how to use it and I have had it for at least 8-10 years. I have a garmin 200 in the car but do not know how or if I can program coordinates into it.

Hi Jog I got my machine as you probably read above. I only bought the one book I am curious though you said you used yours at quartzville. When I was at the factory I talked to Mary who was at the office and she was very helpful, I mentioned to her I wanted a 6 x 10DD or a 4 x 6 DD and she told me everyone was using the 6 x 10 for nuggets. I told her I wanted a small one to look into cracks and crevices and pull out black sand if I got a hit on the detector and she said OH It will not work at Quartzville as there are too many Hot Rocks up There. We will have to get together some time and work it.

Congratulations Gary on your purchase, sounds like you got a great deal. That's a great way to start the new year....with a new MXT.....:detecting:......

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YA!!

There is a lot of hot rocks, but i would just work around them.I don't remember the exact readings i was getting but i was looking for the highest iron # and VDI #.I don't know if i was doing it right but i did find gold in the spots i did dig in.I haven't been doing this all that long but was successful.Cant wait to get back down there.Am hoping to purchase a dredge in the near future.Bobs got a lot more experience than me I'm sure(.FOR INFO) If you would like to get together down there this summer just send me a PM.That would be fun.Good luck with the new MD,sounds like you have already got a new car out of it,HA HA.

Actually Jog I am not doing very well with my new MXT300 It goes crazy outside in my yard. I don't know whats wrong but I cannot adjust it and even with minimum settings it goes crazy. every time I swing it I see a different item like ring penny iron, and most likely all of them including buckle bullet and many more. I have tried ground balancing turning down the gain turning up the dual indicator, moving it to the lock mode fliping the switch ahead on the switch by the head. I tried both coils with the same problem I must have hot rocks at home or the electric lines are getting me or the machine is not right. I can find items if I hear a loud target there is always something there but it makes lots of noise and will not smooth out. I will take it somewhere else tomorrow and see if it still does it . I may have to take it back.

I tried to detect inside a carport with a dirt floor with my MXT but the MXT is to sensitive to large metal objects (tin roof ).Or footings for walls (to much re bar).Is there anything under ground such as a shallow septic tank or large metal object.Should try a different area, but don't give up.Check out your owners manual, see if they give any ideas.Might ask if anybody has any ideas on the general metal detecting site.GOOD LUCK!

I am going to head down there Monday (the 5rh) to get a coil back to them I've evaluated and only wish we were going to have detectable weather. It looks like it will be a little warmer than normal ... but WET, WET, WERT! :(

Let us know about your experiences afield.

Monte
