My First Gold Ring!!!

I am sooo excited - I found my first gold ring today with my Excalibur 800!! The ring is a 10k gold black onyx with a small stone in the middle!! I've only had the Excalibur a couple of weeks and I'm sure this ring isn't much to you veterans, but to me it was GREAT!!! I want to say a special thanks to Waterdog, VaBeachRon, and Gulf Hunter!!! I had read so many forums by Gulf Hunter I felt honored to get your reply! Thanks to all you guys!!! I'm still having trouble pinpointing in the water and this ring was found in a fresh water lake only about 20 minutes from home. Any help on pinpointing in the water would be greatly appreciated. I have a small hand scoop and a long handle scoop, and seem to be doing better with the hand scoop. This find was GREAT for me and guess what, my wife wants to keep the ring (imagine that)! Thanks again! You guys are great and the Excalibur 800 is the bomb! Happy Hunting!

Nice ring!

Gold is gold. 10k is just fine by me. That's a nice style ring too. Looks like an oldie.

Keep working that same area and dig everything. You may have a hot spot there.

As for pinpointing while wading, what I like to do is work the DD coil until the signal disappears just off the heel of the coil then I stop moving it. Then I move a toe just to where the the back of the coil is. Then I move the coil to where my heel is, drag it back a few inches, then I dig.

Keep working the water and you'll develop your own style of pinpointing and digging. It takes some practice. It will become routine after a while.

Whatever you're doing, looks like you're doing it right.

Congrats. on the ring. it does look like it my be an old style ring. the pinpointing will come with practice. Put in the hours it will pay off. HH

Well done!! It takes time to get the pin pointing down. But after just a few months it has become easyer for me, and i hope it will for you also. Far Out ring.. way to go! Don't it feel just freaking great!!! A hobby we love and pays us in so many ways! Best of luck in all your future hunts.. and remember " Have Fun!" Shaka Mikey:thumbup:

When you get a signal, go back and begin with your coil above your target. Then make short, short sweeps, moving your coil over the target a little lower with each sweep. The sweep should be no more than about a foot or so. As you hear the continual report of the detector, afix your eyes to the imaginary center of the swing.

Keep swinging and bringing your coil closer to you. When your detector fails to pick up the beep, the target will be at the center top of your coil. Stop your coil, place one of your feet close to the top and before you drag your coil away, concentrate to where you think it is. Without moving the planted foot (there for reference) just move the coil away and place your long-handled scoop beside your instep and you should be bringin' up loot with surprising frequency.

This is a consistent winner for me. I never use the pinpoint. Works in neck deep water or on dry sand. Try it, you'll like it. Welcome to the minelab family.

Hello metalfun, consider yerself wrecked. Of course you have an issue, with yer wife in the loot box, kinda bleeding a little there, may wanna consider another 800 purchase fer her. That is how I can keep Huntress at bay, on me loot. She goes and finds 'er own and if she wants one of mine, then she has to trade fer it, savvy? Pinpointing will get easier, but just get a good cross over the target and stick the scoop right in the middle of that cross and you should be good to go mate! I'm sure that will be the 1st of many more to come!

I can remember the first 6 gold ring founds in Barbados on 1988 and the 500th gold item found in 1998 in Guadeloupe. The excitement was great for both. Patience and persistence is the answer.

Metalfun, what works for me may not work for you, but here it is:

1280X with 8" coil in fresh water.
X the target to place it in the center of the coil.
Hold coil in place with downward pressure.
Place toe of right foot against the closest edge of the coil.
Remove coil
Place cutting edge of scoop against toe of right foot.
Dig and lift scoop. Holding scoop away from hole, scan again with the coil. If the target is still in the ground, discard the full scoop, close to but not in the hole.
Repeat until the target is not in the ground, it should now be in the current scoop. Secure the target, and refill the hole by pushing your discarded scoop(s) back in the hole and tamping down with foot or feet. :)

Best of luck.
