My First Day With My Ace 250

Na can't drink the tough stuff these days, found i had MS last year, its all going great atm but i can't handle drink anymore, a couple of pints and i'm on my way, in a way its a good thing cos alcohol over here is expensive :veryangry:

You know what they say about Guinness.

Good health to you.

Chris

Seems like someone said you could use a spray can of the stuff to armor a pickup bed instead of a coil cover, But I'm not sure.
If anyone here has tried it let us know how it worked.
I may try it then myself. The coil does get scuffed up bare!!!!!

I found this stone ages ago when i was a kid and always thought it was gold :clapping:
But my Ace250 is saying its not even metal, so what is it? Anyone know?
Sorry about the bad quality pics, i only have my phone with me at the sec

Looks to me like iron pyrite, we have lots of that Fool's Gold here in Canada. If you look closely to to the crystalline structure you will see little squares or cubes. The scratch test will show it is brittle as well. Rocks are fun, crack'em open and you never know what's inside. I use an old Bell and Howell projector lens for a 10x loupe.

Any alternatives to the official coil covers, i'd buy one but shipping to Ireland makes them expensive :throw:

What about a layer or two of electrical tape along the bottom of the coil

That is what I used, electrical tape. I used about a half a roll on mine. I covered every inch of the coil, sides, insides, top, and 2 layers on the bottom . One day I will get a cover but for now the tape works good. It may look bad but who cares, I am not MDing to look pretty. Its my new best sport. Haven't even had my boat out yet. All I want to do is MD...Wish I had found this hobby yrs ago.

I need some advice, I got permission and MDd on some playground last week, the weather has been sunny for a while now and the plugs i dug last week, the grass is kinda dying on them. Any good fixes for this? Bit of water?

Don't dig plugs is the best solution. Cut slits in the sod or half moons and fold the gass back without breaking it loose. It will recover without browning. You can also pop shallow coins out with a lever and a fulcrum as UW suggests. A little rain will put everything right.

Anyone know much about the hand held pinpointers?

I sort of want to buy one but the garrett one seems a bit expensive

Are there any good cheaper makes/models?
Have you got a pinpointer,Are they worth the money?

I am (hopefully) going to do a test in my yard this weekend if the weather cooperates we have had non stop rain this week here in central Fl 6+" and expecting more.

I am "planting" 35 objects in an area of my yard and then detecting these items to see how they show on the ID. I will be taking notes and such as to how certain objects appear on my ACE. I will post if interested. I have everything from poptops, mineral specimens, old antique relic items, and my wifes expensive jewelry! These items are all bagged up and ready to go if the damn storms would just stop!

It should be interesting

Good idea, I have thought of that to but not gotten around to doing it. But I think the items you plant will have to be buried for a while before you get a true reading. They have to develope a halo around them is what I have read. How long I have no idea, but I imagine there is a few people in here who could tell you. I took the quote below from one of UW's post, he really knows MDing so he might be a good one to ask how long things have to be buried to get a true reading...here is what he said.

Nothing fresh buried reads the same as old buried due to an effect known as Metallurgical Phenomenon as your detector is reading a lot more than the target.

I've thought about doing this but these days any free time i get i'll want to go MDing properly, i do try remember where a target was hitting before i take it out of the ground.
I should really take a little note pad with me and write them all down.
But ye it would be interesting to see your results

Yes I know about the halo thing but I want to get a little idea of some of what I might be missing.

Besides jewelry at beaches usually isn't in the ground long anyway. I will post what I find and see if UW and John and all will tell if the readindings are dead on what thye usually see. It will be interesting as I will be burying them at certain depths.

One of the great things about a test garden for the Ace is that you will be able to learn your pinpointing and tone recognition.
Place a wooden golf tee directly over your target to really see where your pinpointing location is..
You will be surprised what different tones the unit makes over different targets also. Pretty quickly you will not bother to look at the screen. Your ears will be able to guess just about as well as your machine does. That is pretty much what all machines do anyway. Just guess at what is in the ground based on interpreted clues.

OK i found this today and i think its a coin but i can't be sure, it's fairly skinny and its covered in crap(hard crap)
What is the safest way to clean it enough to make out if its a coin or not :poke:

Just let it soak in olive oil for a few weeks if you have the patience. You could try vinegar with salt, it's quicker but olive oil is much more gentle, but takes longer. Andy, please start another thread, bro.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!

My only other interesting find tonight was this
