My First Day With My Ace 250

New member
Just testing it out in the back garden, found one coin a few nails and a screwdriver head :clapping::poke: in about half an hour
Either my back garden is full of metal or the 250 likes to beep a lot,
what sensitivity should i set it at for looking in my back garden?
Does the ground being wet make much of a difference to metal detecting?

I'll post pics once i get a few more finds :yo:

Put your sensitivity on four bars and leave it there. Hunt in coins mode for many hours before using other modes. Wet or damp ground increases conductivity of any target. The constant beeping is due to sensitivity being too high.

Bill

Sounds like you were in the all metal mode=you get lots of beeps that way. You have a machine that will find quarters at 5" in sensitivity #2-that's what I use in a trashy area to cherrypick amongst the tabs. I use #3 at schoolgrounds and #4 for clear areas. This machine can amaze you once you play with it. It definitely lets you know metal's in the ground. The sensitivity affects how it reacts to this metal.

I have hit a few tot lots with mine .Had it out twice .I set the sens at 4 and use coin mode one thing I have noticed is if it says nickle it probably a nickle ,have only dug 2 pull tabs and they were at 6-8 inches . It gets better every time I use it.

Ok i tried 4 sens and coin mode, 3 more coins and 1 more nail lol
Coins are recent coins which i knew they would be (coming from my back garden)

Roll on the next dry day that i have nothing to do all day

If it is like my yard the previous owner(s) buried alot of trash ALL OVER the place.

There are places in the yard where the ACE is very quiet then it absolutely goes nuts when it hits the trash spots!

Don

Another thing i've noticed is, i'll be searching the garden and come across something, it will beep when the detector goes over it, then i'll pinpoint and mark the spot, then sometimes if i try sweep over it again the detector won't beep but the pin pointer will still show up something

Is this normal?
Can the pin pointing give false readings?

Pushing the pinpoint button kinda puts the machine into a sensitive "all metal" type mode while engaged. So, if you have items notched out or are in a specific search mode the pinpoint is going to pick up all metal, regardless. It is also so sensitive it will pick up tiny bits that the discriminate modes won't. Also, depending upon how the target is oriented in the ground(on edge, diagonal and not flat, etc.) you may not get a signal when sweeping from one direction but then get a signal sweeping the other direction. Man, I hope I'm not confusing you. I'm sure some others can chime in with advice, too. Happy Hunting!:)

No i understand, thanks for the advice :clapping: off to practice now :pulltab:

Any alternatives to the official coil covers, i'd buy one but shipping to Ireland makes them expensive :throw:

What about a layer or two of electrical tape along the bottom of the coil

I just put on some PVC pipe cement. The stuff is about as thick as honey, filled in the scratches and chips very well.

10 coins so far from my backgarden :yo:

I was at a small beach the other day but found nothing not even trash, probably going to head to a more popular beach next week

Am i right in saying the ace 250 coil can be submerged in water? Just don't let the display get any water?
The wire that comes out of the coil is safe to be put in water as well?

Thanks

Here is a pic of everything i found in my garden probably took about 3-4 hours(mostly digging :goodnight: ) to find all this stuff, most of it is junk but i thought i' post a pic of everything

Both pics are the same just the coins are turned on different sides in each pic, nothing really interesting but its a start :buds:

A good way to learn what the ACE is telling you is dig everthing at first .
This is a way of getting the clad, jewelry, and the rings that will eventually be found.
The ACE coil and wire are waterproof but the control box is not. Don't drop it in the water..
It will be toast is you get any water close to it. Ankle to Knee deep is about as deep you want to go with no waves present .
If you plan to be in waist deep water get yourself a water detector.

Thanks for the advice, i don't even plan on submerging the coil, i just wanted to maybe MD along near the shore line

Ye i'm sort of getting use to the sounds and ways of the ace, i like to dig everything at the moment but we'll see what happens in a while once i have pockets of of trash :pulltab::rofl:

All my coin finds so far from my back garden :buds:

Should i clean the coins or leave them as they are?

I used my ACE for the first few times in the yard and found alot of everything. As I said before in an earlier reponse to you the previous owners used to bury there trash all over however I have found some neat stuff in these trash piles one of them was a token, alot of clad coins, and some older shot gun shell pieces. You may get lucky and find older stuff you may never have dreamed existed on your property so when you are able detect your yard it is fun and it will help you learn your machine. Oh and it will help you clean up what is under you rplace as well. And a parting word of advice...know where all your buried cables and electric lines are! I almost cut my phone line one day!

Don

Are they still legal tender? I tumble my modern coins and then bank them. Anything older than 1964 (when the US went off silver) I leave alone and keep. They look just fine as they come out of the ground.

I found my first obsolete Irish coin last week here in the US. 5 P.

Ye i found my sewage pipe the other day, glad i didn't hit that :puke:

Ye a few coins are legal tender, most are from the 70s 80s and can still be cashed in but all together what you see is only worth about

Have a Powers for me! That's what I like to drink.
