My CONS ON THE MXT PRO

widebody

New member
[size=large]first i must say the MXT PRO is impressive. took it for it's maiden hunt today and really like it. my only cons on it and i can't stress the my enough, is with the D2 coil this puppy is heavey. add the DX-1 and very bad shoulders and you get worn out real fast. another issue is finding myself in relic mode after i know i switched to coin. it's too easy for my shirt sleeve to catch the toggle switch. i was in training today and went through the whole field in relic before i realized it. all those buttons and buckels could have been coins. :ranting:. then there's the probe. twice i forgot to toggle it back to coil. these are just some real minor things to remember on the MXT. sure seems to feel like we is gunna get along just great.
i also should mention the balance. this machine is heavey but because of it's balance i was able to swing it longer than if it weren't balanced. a stronger younger person won't be worn out so fast as i .i for one give it a 8.5 on a ten scale. that's based on my limitations.

One thing you may want to try is to either hold the DX-1 in your free hand or do as I do sometimes and put the probe in a pocket. . . preferably a jacket pocket. It helps.

[size=large]my hunt'n buddy said the same thing. so i quess i'll try it.
an other thing i haven't heard or seen on vids is putting the machine in all metal while using the probe and it works just like the garrett probe. that's with the trigger switch pushed forward, for those who may not know. my hunt'n buddy knows more about this machine than i do and he don't even own one. yet! :wiggle:

I don't have the pro just the MXT but I hunt in relic mode all of the time, I simply watch the vdi #. IMHO I get better depth & response in relic mode over coin mode, & like yesterday I was playing around between the two a quarter in relic showed a vdi of 86 & in coin mode 83.

[size=large]i saw lots of good vdi #'s but the words threw me off. they came up with the buckles and buttons and i wasn't looking for those items. that
should have been my first clue. i'll learn.
some say the mxt is noisey. well it's true but not like my other machine and it doesn't bother me near as much.

I would say too that this unit was a bit hard on my arm. I have a bad rotator cuff and wow, that smarts! But now that I have the smaller 9.5 it seems to be much better. About the shirt cuff, try buttoning the first whole if you have too of them or use a rubberband around the cuff when hunting, this should help with it hanging to low by that switch. Here in Texas its to darn hot for longsleeves. I just have a sunburned arm with a white strap where my strap holds the unit to my arm, and only one arm. That looks corny. Happing swinging....

[size=large]I'm not certain how my cuff is doing it. it has to catch going backward to put it in relic mode.i may just learn to hunt in relic.
here in s.w. Washington we aren't getting enough heat for short sleeves yet. when we do i still have to wear long sleeves cause I'm a redhead and burn very easily. must wear a cover over my neck also. I'll try to stick it out with the d2 cause i want the dd coil. I'll be doing the 950 soon enough as well as the 5.3. bought both. our soil is high mineral. haven't checked it with the mxt but if i did things correctly with my xlt my ground reading came up -93.

I shortened up my lower rod,use a hand held pinpointer(garrett or Bullseye II) and it made a big difference in how long I can swing the MXT PRO.I'm going to use the rubber o-ring fix for the knobs as I end up in Relic mode sometimes also. This may help you.Bill

That 5.3 coil will do your arm even better. Nice and light. That's one of the main reasons that I keep it on mine most of the time . . .

[size=large]was giving thought to selling the dx-1 and stick to my garrett probe. found out the garrett does effect the mxt though. so far i still prefer the hand held. can't shorten lower rod till i remove the dx-1. it's in the way.
found out how handy the 5.3 is when i started using my xlt version.
saw the idea about the o'rings a few months ago. won't keep me out of relic but doesn't allow passive changes of the knows. i've been reading and watching all i can on the mxt for some time.
thanks for all the tips. these forums have been the biggest source of my info on my machines.

Try this. Set your MXT Pro up to hunt in Coin & Jewelry mode with Tone ID on. Go hunting and when the multiple Tone IDs stop, you will know right away that the search more switch has been moved to Relic.

If you use only one clip to attach the DX-1 probe to the detector shaft, the probe will wiggle a little as you swing the detector. If you forget to flip the DX-1 switch back to the main coil, this wiggle will give you continuous quarter signals. You will soon recognized those continuous signals as a forgotten switch change.

By the way, there are some sharp edges on the DX-1 mounting clips. If you are at all clumsy like me, those sharp edges can cause minor cuts. Blunting those sharp edges with a fine file may save you the expense and aggravation of a few bandaids.

A 5.3 or 6x10 search coil will really lighten and improve the balance of the MXT Pro. And, some type of detector sling will probably help your arm and shoulder. One of my club members makes a detector sling that has allowed my bad shoulder to continue detecting.

Good hunting.

I have the MXT, not the pro and my only serious con is the weight. I'll admit I've been pretty spoiled starting with and using some of the lightest detectors out there before I got the MXT. That said, I really like the ability of the MXT and feel it is one of the most versatile detectors out there, especially if you have a good selection of coils to add to it. As others have mentioned, keep the rod as short as possible and use the lighter coils when they will do the job. I like the 5.3 or the 6X10 a lot and most of the time don't need bigger.
When you really get to know the detector I'm sure you'll really enjoy it, heavy or not.

I understand it when you say the machine is heavy on your bad arm because I too have a bad arm. I shortened the rod and changed to a 6x10 dd coil and it helped a bunch. I just bought a sunray and attached it with the rod being shortened (I think) and I didn't notice any increase in weight with the dx-1. I switch arms fairly often. That is a great idea carrying the probe in your free hand, I'll try that! Keep swinging!

Hi widebody,

[size=large]was just outside fooling with coils and such. seems the d2 sounds off better in relic and the 950 sounded off better in coin. and the 950
was much lighter.
removed the dx-1 and will be selling it. this allowed me to shorten the rod enough for me.hunts with the d2 will have to be a little shorter in time. i already know i really like this machine. don't have the 6x10 but was wondering about getting a 8x6 sef instead. any opinions?

[size=large]seem to be having problems with my post not posting. my last one didn't get posted. anyway was going to sell the dx-1 but there's already two up for sale and for prices i won't go down to so i'll keep it and maybe get those side mounts for the box instead. i'd like to give it a chance without the d2.
apparenly my machine is acting up. had to reboot and all post were there.will know more on the morrow. suppose to be sunny and a good day to fiddle around. looking forward to everyones posts.

I have 2 DX-1 probes. One is the newer model with a 6 inch black probe. The other is an older unit with a longer white probe. For some reason that I cannot explain, they both work better, meaning deeper and clearer, on an MXT than on either a V3i or a DFX. If you can find a way to get that DX-1 mounted so your MXT Pro swings right for you, I think you will really like how it performs. The higher you turn up the MXT Pro gain, the deeper the DX-1 will sense a target. And, the DX-1 will really help separating and IDing multiple targets in a hole.

Again, wishing you good luck.
Bob

[size=large]thanks Bob. will try a side mount. or again i'll see about the pocket mount. mine is the black model. this machine is suppose to be 4 months old. don't know why the guy traded it. will get more info or confirmation from whites as to age on monday. i see on the label inside it for sure was made in 2010 so the probe won't be any older unless he bought it used. i know it works so it really doesn't matter. looking forward to playing with this.

The black probe DX-1 is the newer model. Just realized you or sort of in Monte

One important point in the DX-1's favor also is it's ability to better discern a target that is giving a mixed signal/vdi from your main coil. Many times I have gotten such a signal that I think might be a good target being masked but when I turn the probe on it it shows it to be a bad target which saves me a lot of digging. The depth confirmation aspect is also very useful to gather/confirm information. I know my probe limits at right around 3" +/- If I get a good vdi reading at 4" but the probe is picking up a strong signal, I KNOW it's shallower than that and also smaller than a coin so I can save digging quite often here also. There's more factors than weight alone that can figure into saving yourself physically and hunting longer. JMHO
