My Brain Storm Listen up Tesoro

With all the wondering about if Tesoro is going to come out with any new models got me thinking....

I belong to several forums and one of them seems to have a handful of new members join daily, and they all ask the same question. I am a newbie and what detector should I get, I will be hunting for ???? and???? and maybe some ???.

About 9 out of 10 of the regulars say get the Ace 250, it the best thing since slliced bread, it can blah blah blah blah.

I am not trashing Garrett (they are a great company) but I stick my nose in and tell them to get a Silver uMax instead. I have been detecting for almost 30 years, bought an Ace & didn't it. Read all the hype again & said it must of been just me so bought another one a few years later. Same thing, didn't like it. Didn't like the slow reponse time, the horrid belltone, inaccurate TID, to name a few things.

So I am thinking that Tesoro could/would make a killing if they were to come out with a Tesoro version of the Ace. Keep the price at about $200.00 or so, have an accurate TID (even though I myself don't like TID machines), keep all the Tesoro quality as we have been used to, such as cam locks/3 piece design, run on one 9 volt battery/ and be light weight.... etc....

I mean think of it, all these people are buying the Ace like hotcakes - image how an ~Ace made to Tesoro's standards would sell. Ok sorry for the rambling on folks. Just a brain storm I had. Steve.

P.S. Hey Tesoro I get 10% of the profits for the idea .

they'll make their move soon.

One thing they know and we should be aware of is all models have their own followings.

If an upgrade to a model is made without thinking about its relationship to the other models, Tesoro risks losing one or more model sales.

For instance, lets say they make a Silver uMax with adjustable threshold and greater sensitivity. Who then will buy the Cibola?

If they make a Cibola with ground balance, who then will buy the Vaquero?

See the money is in many successful models that have their own unique features.

To us the whole thing is simple--to the people who pay the bills it's highly complex.

To make any significant changes to one model--all models must be bumped-up somewhat. Very tricky stuff.

They could just make one model with everything and then go broke. For years we'd all fight over that model whenever it showed on ebay

Mine's pretty close to the ID thing. I have a Tesoro Royal Sabre and when in the regular disc mode (not notch), the notch level control can be rotated to where the two tones split at the tab level. The BH Tracker operates on the same principle, but has a wider split and better identifies the tabs. I could have my notch level widened, but am happy with my Royal as is-it's still pretty darn close to accurate on the tabs. Now why would I want an inexpensive Tesoro set up like this? With this setup, you can accurately identify a pile of tabs with the broken tone-but carefully slide a penny, dime, or quarter under the mess and the high tone kicks in! The same with a coin spill where several nickels are involved. Place 2-3 nickels together-low tone. Slide a dime UNDER them-high tone! It is so accurate that the tabs closest to the nickel in id give more low tone than high and square tabs give more high tone than low when the two tones mix. This way,Steve you can operate it as a beep-dig machine, operating at say foil disc, hear every signal, and with Tesoro's characteristics and new tone ID, and decide on what you want to do based on all this info.:clapping:
By the way, some of the coins in this pic of an outing with the BH Tracker were from coin spills where nickels would have caused a tab reading because they were mixed with pennies, dimes.

Well said and good post guys. I guess what gets me is why oh why do so many push the Ace and why so many people buy them.

Like I say there is nothing wrong with Garrett they are a great company ran by some great people. But I would love to see Tesoro getting some of the same kind of sales that Garrett is getting with their Ace.

I don't say change anything that Tesoro already has just add a simple detector to compete. I know they produce the Silver uMax and the Compadre but the newbies gotta have the TID's. I like Tesoro so well for so long I wouldn't like anything more them to see them not being able to keep up with all the money comming in from the sales of a new detector. Steve.

You must have been reading the same posts I have been.. I would like to see a Silver or Cibola with a simple TID. I think they would sell like hotcakes

I didn't read much about it, more of a why not thought I had after reading all the get the Ace get the Ace posts on other forums. Like I said earlier for the life of me I don't understand why the Ace sells so well, other than the price maybel the color who knows. I know if Tesoro would make a model similar I know it wold have Tesoro's quality and the "it just works" built into it. Steve.

the ace is a ka ka word with me that's for sure the only way i would recomend one is the guy i'm going against in a competition and that's the only way

I think you're right as to a similar Tesoro selling well. Personally, I think newbies shouldn't even consider a TID machine until they have a hundred hours or so on a beep and dig machine. But then they'd leave less for the rest of us to find. LOL I'd like to see a machine similar to the Cortes with either a manual or auto ground balance in both modes and a little larger display.

Im whith you 12 khz three tone I,D interchangeble coils a 5" concentric for shure a good sensitivity knob ED 180 and a ground balance and some VDI numbers OO dude i would buy one the ED 180 really does make a diffrence I could go whithout a ground balance but at least a sensitivity knob and the ability to change coils

Ive read the ground balance on a machine helps it with different coils as machines are tuned to the coil they come with. Anyone know if this is true, that to get max performance out of any coil other than the stock coil, ground balance would be necessary? I mean other than sending the machine in to have it retuned to a different coil.

Put a meter on the Tejon and rework that battery setup its got then discontinue the Cortes. Simple enough, theyve discontinued quite a few models in the past to make way for new machines. Hey if they wanted to get fancy they could add another frequency with a toggle for us to choose which to use. something like 3 or 4 khz for coin hunting:thumbup:

My Golden Sabre II seems to have the same capabilities and discriminating pull tabs that way works for me to a certain point. Some of the older tabs ring more on the high tone and aren't so easily identified. I was surprised that the manual doesn't explain the technique you describe. It was pretty much up to me to piece together different bits of info I came across and figure it out on my own.
In my opinion, Tesoro could benefit by providing a better explanation of their machines' features and techniques both in the manual and on the website. They can easily appear less capable than they are to a new owner.
IMHO, adding Ace-style TID's to a Tesoro would be like putting spinners on a Subaru. There are some that would find it cool but 10 years down the road it will seem ridiculous.

Yes I said that too for sure, have a dual frequency Tejon with both the 17 and 3 kHz that can be used individually with a toggle.(The Minelab Eureka Gold, new Whites Vision, and DFX uses this method I think, by using the same coil for all frequencies but the X-Terra 70 has different coils for each frequency.)

The 3 kHz for coin hunting and it will still pick up small gold rings and knock out iron much better. I am a big fan of low frequencies for coin hunting. Those high frequencies on the V and T make it harder to knock out iron. Also just put a very simple TID meter on the Tejon with Auto-Tracking GB as well.

Good point about a Ground Balance not only adjusts the Metal Detector to the ground but also to the different coils as well.

for what, there worth,my thoughts, from down under, are this.on the vaquero, lose the pinpointer,i never use it.replace it with a variable frequency knob that allows you to hunt in say:- 3khz,6.6khz,10.6khz,12khzand 14.5khz.then we could say that we had an all round detector.i have a compadre, vaquero and recently acquired silver sabre.i enjoy them all, however i would like to be able at the flick of a switch to change to the frequency of choice.rather than buying a new detector to cover the frequency that i want.minelab have the ability to change frequency by simply changing a coil. surely tesoro can do better. hh,see ya blowfly

Guys
Hope all is well with you all, in short i now use the Vaq, i have used the Ace 250, Xterra 50.My point is this, whats the Point of Tesoro making a TID Detector if its not a notch up on the competition, no meter is any good past 6-7 Inches and that's if your Lucky, take the Xterra 50 for example, and have heard the same regards the latest E Trac, i was sick to death in Australian soil getting the ID for silver, mostly it was Old iron, sorry guys but the id saying Silver and out pops old iron whats the good of that. The Vaq I'm not saying is perfect but its as good as you will get at the moment, must say i use the Vaq for Relic hunting old sites, the disc on the Vaq detector Ive had the same shell cases,shotgun/pistol/Rifle all in a variety of conditions from the same site, the poor quality ones Disc out early on the Scale, a TID would send me nuts in our soil.I would like Tesoro yes to develop new Products, but good Products that work. Only my thoughts but its going to have to be a good detector to shelf the Vaq.

I think every one is forgetting that not having all these features is what makes Tesoro's so great. Tesoros are somewhat bare bones but very effective in what they do and as every one knows light. Add all the bells and whistles and meters etc.. then its not a tesoro any more. Why fix it if it isnt broke!

Best Regards,

Your spot on, why do we need all the Bells/Whistles Etc, truth of the matter is most do not work the best, ive tried them. When we say Bare Bones i feel we are Selling Tesoro Short. But sad to say all the Bells/Whistles/Bullshit is the way of the future.A new guy buying a detector is so easy sold on the Bells /Whistles, sad one but Tesoro have to keep up and Develop new/Better Products for the Market, that have all the Bells/Whistles, hope no Bullshit.
