Great story! reminds me of a farmer that gave me permission to hunt his property and asked if I find a gold band, please return it. I searched the area in which he said his grandfather lost the ring, some 30- 40 yrs prior. He also mentioned another detector seached for it with no prevail. Well, I was running out of time and light, when I got a signal and had my buddy dig it while I moved on fr a coupe of last sweeps. My buddy yelled" hey did you plant this"? Certainly did not, but would have been a good joke! Anyway, returned to the farmer and held out my hand, wrapped around the ring . He opened his hand and I dropped it in. Only the words" you gotta be kidding me" as he whelled up with tears! He rushed over to his mothers house to size it up against other grandfather rings and determined it was the lost ring.
Nevertheless, he was the happiest and remains so to this day.
The story gets a little better... after suprising him, he did mentioned a farm hand that lost another band in the nearby field. Believe it or not, we found that one within a few minutes and returned it also. It was Christmas 3yrs ago and he shipped it off to the ex farmhand for a present.
You could imagine that we had full run of the farm. Several days and hours of hunting later, turned up a goose egg! Farm is Circa 1820's... go figure! I think it has been filled in and too deep! Didn't have the heart to ask if i could bring in a dozer to scrape the top 12" off!
