My anti-virus is about to expire for Vista - any recommendations

I use AVG Free Edition. Go to avg.com and use the site map at the bottom of the page to find AVG FreeEdition 9.0

Don''t know if it's the same as above but Avast has been on my machines for years and I go surfing lots of potentially dangerous sites. Never has let anything past the protection. Avast is supposed to be a group of super Techys at the university level who VOLUNTEER their knowledge and time to combat the virus problem. If you go commercial you have to pay for it. There is a free home version. Have a son who is a computer science graduate and that's what he uses and advised me to do the same. Never been sorry. You do have to re-register yearly but they let you know when it's due and make it easy to do so. jim

Ask the professor. He has a free one he informed everyone about a couple of months ago.

PS I have AVG which I purchased.

Max,

Check it out...all good advice here. I have long recommended AVG and it is great. I recently worked on a machine that had Avast anti-virus on it and I was pretty impressed with it as well. I installed it on another persons machine and it works very well...doesn't take up a lot of resources, very "low maintenance", etc.

BUT...I recently tried something else that I like more than all the others and has gotten some very good reviews. It's made by Microsoft and is free to all legal Windows users...meaning your copy of Windows can pass Microsoft's "product authentication check", which unless you are running a pirated copy, will not be a problem. It is called "Microsoft Security Essentials" and is VERY competent, checks for spy-ware, mal-ware, and virus infections, automatically updates and scans on a regular basis, and is working flawlessly on all 3 machines here at my house for some time now. I think this is the best way to go, since the very people that make the Windows operating system make this as well. Once Microsoft decides to get into something, the usually don't lose. Who else to write a better program for Windows than the Windows programmers?

You can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Mike...thanks for the tip on the MS application. I am no techy but I have asked my son, the computer science grad, what he thinks of it. jim

I took AVG off my wife's computer and installed Microsoft essentials, runs much faster now. AVG is known for slowing things down.

I never thought AVG did slow things down but agree that it does seem nearly transparent with MS Security Essentials. Avast is also very good too in that respect. AVG has gotten a little more "bloated" in their recent versions, since they started to detect spy-ware and mal-ware in addition to just viruses. I do think MS has a great product with this. And the price is right...free!

Nice double post Mike!! Did you send that on two different computers at the same time? jim

Actually, I hit "Post" on the first one and it said that an identical post already existed and that was not allowed. Since that was not the case, and I was just posting it for the first time, I clicked it again. It said the same thing. So I changed the subject slightly and hit post again and it went through. And there was only the one. Later, they both showed up. Never had that happen before.

Mike...Do AVAST and Security Essentials operate at the same time on the same computer? I know I have tried to put some a couple of different protections on the same computer and they started fighting each other. Had to choose and dump one of them. Appreciate your thoughts on that. Thanks...jim

No, you would want to choose one or the other. It's never a good idea to run two of those types of apps on the same machine...particularly if they are both trying to scan your machine and/or update themselves at the same time. Could be a big performance hit.

Whichever one you choose, it would be a great choice. I'm going with MS Security Essentials for now...seems very solid.
