MX Sport owners

Relic mode is so glitchy that I had to go to prospecting. Hope it was something I was doing wrong.

Hello Bill,

Compare the two modes, preset Relic mode and then Prospecting mode with VCO off position and bump up SAT between 4 to 5.

Hunt with both modes, you'll find the tweaked prospecting mode is better. Quicker, smoother, easier on the ears too. One mean 2-tone machine.

Hello Hombre,

That's a neat nail test to perform, yeah even the smallest piece of iron can mask a good target when the piece of iron is at the right position.

White's really made some improvements with the MX Sport, one being depth.

Take care!
Paul

Preset relic is a mess. Soundd like something is broken as its constant chatter and false signals.

Prospecting with the vco off is very chattery but its like its muffling the chatter because its pretty low. Then when you gonover something it releases the volume and he sound pics up.

Hello Bill,

With the other Presets including Relic mode, I'm seeing a bigger then normal coil foot print and with the audio dragging on makes it hard for me at least to desiffer the signals, coupled with great sensitivity that bigger than normal footprint makes it even more difficult to hunt with.

Prospecting mode the coil footprint is normal, with VCO off position coupled with quick snappy audio the signal is much easier to hear. Plus, increasing SAT greatly helps the signal as well and with all this positive information you've got an easy setup to understand.

Use the FREG feature to clam it down if you're experiencing EMI or interference near another detector, don't bump up SAT to max as this also adds some chatter.

Please continue to use my settings and compare with preset Relic, seriously want to hear yours and others feedback.

All the best,
Paul

Do you think the new Whites "MX Sport" will beat the Garrett "At Pro"?

Garrett At pro has been around along time and they have sold 1,000 of them over the years. A lot of great reviews on them on this web site.

Tell me what you all think of the new Whites detector Mx Sport?

Thanks for your input.

Clearly the AT Pro was the intended target in the MX Sport's design.

The AT Pro has proven to be one heck of a detector and being waterproof is an added bonus.

The MX Sport has features that the Garrett does not and vice versa.

The MX Sport has multiple programs that have different functions associated with each.

The AT Pro has more coils available and having a smaller one is a plus in high trash

The MX Sport makes switching coils or headphones easier with the plugs being more accessible than the AT Pro

Warranties are the same between the two with the MX Sport being transferable during the 24 month window

Price may drive people to one camp as the Garrett is $100 less than the MX Sport

There will be some that love one over the other based on target response, weight, feel and even color (had that comment this past weekend at a club hunt)

Overall, they are both solid performers and will develop supporters based on what is found . . . .

Andy

Andy thank for answering my question. I have one more .What do you mean The MX sport has more multiple programs that has different functions associated for each?

I do have a At pro and have found a lot of great relics with it. I was just thinking if I should trade it in for a Whites MX Sport. What do you think I should do.? Do I up grade or keep the At Pro? And how long will it take to get the bugs out of this one?

Andy did a great job covering the differences, some may perfer one over the other.

I would go with the MX Sport, much more machine.

However, As I mentioned on the original post. I would go with prospecting mode and turn off VCO and bump up SAT to 4 or 5. This mode will out perform the AT Pro, but one needs to go with these settings with prospecting mode.

My take of course, take care.

Paul

The AT Pro has the two main modes with the PRO mode giving people a chance to step up without upgrading equipment.

The discrimination is the same in both; i.e., notches; however, the MX Sport has what one could call multiple units in one box.

The COIN & Jewelry, BEACH and HIGH TRASH modes are similar in terms of Discrimination with different tone options and salt track active. Easy enough to make one mode do all of these so I woudl tend to lump them together into one "mode"

PROSPECTING is an all metal mode with iron grunt but VDI provided . . . nice to have a true all metal mode

Same holds true for ALL METAL which allows you to choose the VCO audio if desired.

RELIC is either a love it / hate it option with the Mixed Mode audio.

Both units are great detectors . . . . if you have one and are doing well with it, try to get a chance to try one before you make the switch since it will be different than what you are used to and with any detector change, finds will initially drop off as you get the same familiarity with the new unit as you had with the other one.

Andy

then why out all these great features does it sound like the prospecting mode is the only one that work well ?

The MX Sport is a great unit for my freshwater hunting. I love the All metal with iron grunt with vco. Very deep detector and easy to locate targets in murky water with Vco on, no need to use pinpoint. Thank You Whites for creating this new unit. Very impressed so far. Can't wait for the smaller coil for the water.

That's so true Darryl,

For fresh water hunters, all metal or Prospecting mode with VCO on is like going gold nugget hunting with the zip zip response.

Also, even fresh water and can be extremely mineralized. We're all targets ID as iron even pennies, dimes and quarters. Just yesterday, a silver dime and 1972 half ID'd as iron. It's those situations we must dig all, mineralization drops down the ID into iron range.

When water hunting, use no discrimination or notching. It's useless all VLF suffer from fresh water sand in our western states, dig it all.

Was using my MX Sport yesterday at local river, Prospecting mode with VCO on. Love it so smooth with good depth more so than a standard VLF.

Darryl, you're using one of the two best modes for fresh water, glad to see you see the differences.

Hello pax,

Allot of people prefer these extra features, many have no problem using a longer tone feature or slower recovery. And many also perfer faster shorter snappier tones.

I perfer features for Relic hunting or detecting mineralized soil, that's were I found the prospecting mode can accommodate both.

Andy did a great review, I hope many will take his information and use it. What I'm sharing are great settings for the serious detectorist hunter, we are so lucky White's Incorporated these settings with the prospecting and all metal mode.

Take care,
Paul

This is a brand new unit, even newer for those of us that have never used a mxt before. The mode that Old California has recommended is great for relic and freshwater hunter's.
This is a water unit after all. I also think the other modes have potential with the right setting tweaks, just wait.

I'm sold, gotta have one now. Trouble is I just picked up 2 new machines so I gotta get off my duff, get out and scoop up a couple rings to pay for it.

Paul,
Maybe Jim will make encourage Whites to make the waterproof prospecting model just for him and we'd be able to just get the working part at a good price?
HH
Mike

Hello Mike,

That's a great idea, I don't know if Jimmy wants to take on any more adventurous projects he's getting up there in age. But this would be a good one for him.

Today, hit a pounded site of ours an old 1860-90's school house. Buried down sometime after, nabbed a fried coin, may be Indian or wheat? Hard to tell, any cleaning it'll crumble.

The site is laced with iron, learned a bit more with SAT. Earlier, I mentioned using SAT 4 to 5 well these SAT settings are great for trashy parks. But in areas with iron, maximum SAT (6) is best, coupled with prospecting mode VCO off position its quick. Plus, although it's super quick under these conditions with these settings see a need for a smaller coil, so I'll be purchasing the coil package when it's available.

Then, I flipped over to the assigned Relic mode, compared it with my hot prospecting mode with VCO off, between the two modes hands down Prospecting mode with VCO off position and SAT at 6 (maximum) fared allot better.

Those wanting to try these settings for advanced MXT 2-tone performance, don't let the idea because it's prospecting mode it can't achieve inland VLF Relic performance. Trust me, You'll smile ear to ear once trying these settings.

Mike, you've got to get one and try my settings. You'll park the Vi3 and enjoy the MX Sport, and boy is it deep on low conductive especially the smallest finds nails them with ease even in a carpet of iron.

Take care buddy!
Paul
