Found Prospecting and All Metal mode can be operated for coin and Relic hunting, give these settings a try.

Have any MX Sport users tried Prospecting or All Metal mode for land hunting?

I believe these two modes are great for coin shooting not just for nugget hunting or mineralized fresh water sand.

I say this because the MX Sport operates great in these two modes for inland hunting providing VCO is off, seriously turns the MX Sport into a mean machine. Play with SAT too, you'll see what I mean. For prospecting or fresh water with these two modes intend to keep VCO on, but for coin or Relic hunting VCO off.

When I starte experimenting with settings, found these two modes with prospecting and all metal it's a deep mean machine with fast no dragging on audio it's quick and deep!

Let me know if you're seeing/hearing what I'm experiencing with using these two modes, with these two modes the unit is one mean machine.

All the best,
Paul

Only tried air test with them but it seemed with the right Sat setting and iron audio you can mimic the feel of certain other two tone machines. Nice and zippy if you know what I mean.

Yes indeed it's like the MXT only deeper, I'll share more later in the week. Already scoring silver from a dry river, won't be long gold jewelry surfaces.

Prospecting mode is really two modes in one when flipping off VCO for Relic or park hunting, it's hot and lighting fast. I'm using around a 4 to 5 on SAT with boost on.

Thanks for trying out my settings, hope others try these settings.

Thanks again,
Paul

Have you noticed that the included coil seems to be tuned to larger as opposed to coin sized objects? I tried the relic mode on a charm bracelet and got unreal depth. Can't wait to try the 6x10 or smaller coil.

Yes, try the same charm bracelet on the prospecting mode with VCO turned off. Can you let me know if the results are the same? I experienced fantastic air test with mine too, gold rings at unbelievable air test depth.

For me, Prospecting mode with VCO turned off is the better Relic mode over the assigned Relic mode. Bump up SAT a little and you've got one mean MXT, quick recovery with no audio dragging on as with the other assigned modes. Deep too, bury a nickel at 12" inches it'll get it with a 2-way signal.

Looking forward to viewing your future MX Sport adventures!

Thanks trash finder for trying these settings, if possible try these settings out in the field and you'll see a remarkable improvement. What's happening is in prospecting and all metal mode the coil is detecting a smaller footprint. And shutting off VCO turns the unit into an MXT Relic or park turf detector. Coupled with White's improvements, it's allot deeper and faster recovery speed when bumping up SAT....Also, when I say deeper this is due to the improvements, every mode is about the same depth wise but in Prospecting or All Metal mode the unit is more controllable, smoother and quicker thus better enhanced in trashy areas or areas with mineralization.

Going forward, the only mode I'll be using is Prospecting mode, turning the VCO on or off is what shifts this mode from prospecting to MXT Relic/Coin mode.

So glad White's made this detector, for my type of Hunting the prospecting mode covers it all.

Thanks again for trying my settings, use it out in the field you'll never go back to another mode.

Hi Paul,

I use the MX in All Metal and use the notch to take out what I'm not looking for.. VCO ON , SAT I adjust accordingly and iron grunt ON gives me more control on targets I'm looking for. . And it goes deep for sure and it is a beast. Since I only water hunt I can only tell you what works for me. I hunted stops yesterday and today that I and others have hunted heavy before with other units and still found a small silver ring at 9" and a very small silver pendant at 8" in freshwater sand/gravel beach.

Darryl

Im picking mine up in the morning and going out. Can you run disc in prospecting mode? And in prospecting you want the VCO on zero (off?)

Hello Bill,

Prospecting mode does not have discrimination, but it does have VCO.

Prospecting mode iron grunt is fixed, but that's OK because once you switch off VCO and bump up SAT (4-5) your MX Sport just turned into one hot MXT.

Please share your views with this setup, good luck and enjoy the hot MXT!

Paul

Hello Darryl,

Congrats with scoring the two pieces of jewelry, and that's just the beginning wait till swimming season.

I heard you picked up the MX Sport, that's great and already you're using all metal. Yup, I used all metal today along with prospecting mode. All Metal has a little more fexability, more features to tweak. And yes indeed in water or dry sand use VCO on position, smoother response in mineralization easier to hear deeper or weaker signals. But for Relic or coin shooting VCO off position, VCO is the magic feature with the MX Sport using prospecting or All Metal.

We'll get together in the near future, u up for a relic hunt or perfer water?

Take care Darryl!
Paul

Ill probably need to keep it in relic mode for disc then. Tons of nails and fence wire where I'll be.

Hi Old California,

This is trashdigger from another forum we both visit. I could not log in with the same handle here--someone already has it.

I believe we hunted the same site in the central coast of California and eyeballed an Indian grinding stone. I believe you buried the one you found and left the one I found in the field.

I would be interested in your thoughts on how the MX Sport would handle the masking of targets because of the amount of nails, iron and trash at that site and what possible depth do you think it would get on those targets there. My inexpensive Bountyhunter has done a pretty good job there but it's limitations are obvious.

Thanks,

tg

Hello TD,

You must be from the area with many Adobe sites, yes I remember the site. And recently received permission to detect the one next to this particular settlement.

To be honest, I'm just getting a good feel on the MX Sport. Only had it since yesterday, but have learned so much from yesterday and today's hunt. As far as Relic hunting, I feel it should do very well if I stay with Prospecting mode with VCO off and run SAT between 4-5.

Don't let the Prospecting mode itself sound like it's the wrong mode for Relic or park hunting, with VCO off the detector turns into an MXT but with more depth and because of SAT recovery speed is adjustable for different conditions.

I may detect an old Relic site this weekend, but with an ongoing family emergency that may not happen, can't travel too far.

I guess could detect a local pounded site with allot of iron, that may be my second choice if I can't break away for the weekend.

Will add, Serious Relic hunters will see what I'm trying to share here with using prospecting mode with VCO off, once they use it they won't go back to any of the other modes. It's that good, transform the MX Sport into a remarkable detector with the performance and recovery speed they need.

I'll let you know how it does, especially at the site in question. However, last time at this particular site the land was growing feed for cattle, believe it still has a ways before harvest.

Take care,
Paul

Hello Bill,

Many Relic hunters including myself use the iron grunt as a form of discrimination, we hear it we know it's iron and prefer to let the iron signal come through.

Depending on the user, can be a nightmare listening to iron or music to ones ears :)

Take care
Paul

What kind of depth are the targets hitting at with the MX Sport? This detector has a boost mode?

Hey thanks for the explanation. I am new to whites and did not know the vco and sat terms. I had bought the mx sport and stumbled onto the prospecting mode just experimenting in my yard. I was very frustrated as the coin/jewelry mode seemed very unstable with sens above 5, (maybe i have some emi?) the machine would just beep and show targets and vid numbers randomly. I helped this some by going to all metal and lowering my sens as low as it would go then ground balancing the unit and changing back to coin/jewelry mode then bumping sens to 4 or 5 while also adjusting freq to about +4. This seemed to calm it down enough i could use it. Then i was just experimenting and stumbled onto the prospecting mode and started playing around in it. I was turning the vco on and off and adjusting the sat and seeing what it did on my gold rings and silver coins and that is when i noticed my depth was fantastic even at sens 4 and 5. It was getting dark and i went back inside and saw your post on this in the forum. I can hardly wait to get back out today after work and try more of your input on this machine in this mode. Thanks for sharing and helping! I posted on whites forum for help with the machine but only got some hellos from other users there. I will be looking here for future posts from Paul and others who know whites machines!

I feel you'll see the advantage with using my settings in prospecting mode, very simple settings too VCO OFF for MXT like performance or VCO ON for gold nugget/fresh water (zip zip) performance.

The SAT is important too, in your area of Relic hunting between 4-5 is good. Run Sensitivity depending on masking, allot of iron and some mineralization in your area so you may not be able to operate with high sensitivity.

Frequency offset (FREG)...this feature helps clam down if around another detector or may even help indoors/outdoors if EMI is present. Select FREG then slowly thumb through selecting one of the seven settings until the machine settles down.... I used it yesterday, a friend was using my ATX and with the crosstalk FREG setting cleared up the chatter with the MX Sport.

Please trust me with using prospecting mode with VCO off, these are the settings you need for your area. I know you'll miss out with some of the cool features the other modes have but for quickness and controllability prospecting mode with VCO off is terrific for Relic or coin shooting.

Good luck!
Paul

Hello nalc472,

For my area at a local park, have a test bed with pennies and a couple of nickels. Your soil may be different effecting depth, the deepest my MX Sport could detect a penny was 9" inches and it was a weak 1-way signal. But on nickels had to bury a deeper one at 12" inches and it detected with a 2-way signal. This unit is hot on low conductive, I'm seeing this out in the fresh water dry sand picking up the tinest bits and pieces of low conductive trash.

I haven't tried the MX Sport for deep turf park hunting, maybe this weekend but honestly feel based from a previous post of yours you're better off staying with the Etrac for park silver.

My take of course, explorers are soild performers for park hunting. Can't go wrong with them, they have the edge for that type of Hunting.

Take care,
Paul

Hi Paul...

...I have an old coin garden in my front yard and it took years for them to respond like naturally buried coins that has rested in the ground for many decades. Here is a test for you that I like to pull with my friends when comparing signals. I have a small 3½" square nail that I carry around in my finds pouch and when a hunting buddy has me come over to check his signal with my detector, I sneak out the square nail and place it over his target. Har,Har...Then they can't find the target. Then we will move the nail in small increments until they can pick it back up again, small concentric coils rule in this scenario.
