More Legend quirks

Here's another one for your collection… Take 2 pulltabs (29-30 in my case, one was a beavertail; not sure if it matters) and a silver ring (mine was 45); put it between these pulltabs. If pulltabs are closer than 1" to the ring, the whole thing reads like a pulltab, regardless of recovery speed, mode, IF etc. I kinda expected this.

But as you slowly start spreading these pulltabs farther away from the ring, once the gap reaches about 2-3" (with a 6" coil, recovery at 10), you'll get a very iffy signal that will be jumping between 10 and 18 at most, across all 3 items. Not even a pulltab, it's all foil now.

…I thereby name this phenomenon "foiling".

10-20% of our eyes field of view is taken by a blind spot, yet somehow we don't even notice most of the time.
I doubt that I'll ever encounter a silver ring laying between 2 pulltabs that are perfectly spaced at 2-3".
But it's good to know about the shortcomings of your machine. For example, as a result of today's experiment, if I'm in the area with extreme pulltab density searching for silver, I'll be looking for "big" pulltab signatures and "dotted" foil signals.

Maybe, or maybe not. I wonder how other SMF/FMF detectors will handle that…
If you have other machines to compare, I suggest repeating the whole "spreading pulltabs slowly" routine for each of them, as their "blind spots", if present, will likely vary.

Is that in all modes and all freqs independently? Only minor problem I’ve been noticing is deep foil upgrading to higher numbers. Pulltabs have been staying mid 30s but foil going crazy (in 4khz).

Did you try raising the coil 3-4 inches ?

It might react like my quarter experiment…

Put your machine in 4khz and try recovery speed at 5,,I'll bet you'll get a different result

Was going to say have you guys tried this stuff with other detectors? Seems like we can go round and round with all detectors and different scenarios and they will all probably have quirks. jmo.
Again doesn’t effect me really as I basically dig everything so as long as the pulltab or ring at least registers going to find the other i would think. And wouldn’t you dig pulltabs as they might be jewelry?
I think i get it though you guys want to know exactly what the target is before digging, but still wondering is some type of phenomenon happening with all detectors. I suppose this all takes some sort of mindset that i lost interest in going down that rabbit hole for some reason. Probably the same mindset as working at Wuhan.

All detectors have similar "issues". It is the nature of the IB technology. Some have better resolution than others depending on conditions.
The key for me is knowing each of my machines well enough to have a good idea of what is under the coil. Jumpy numbers can tell you something too. Then I can make the decision to dig or pass. If there is any doubt, the target gets dug. I have been getting the best balance of tone/TID/separation/depth with Recovery speed on the low end. I seldom run higher than 3 even in heavy trash. My normal swing speed is fairly slow. I try to feel through the ground instead of "cover" it.
I think Nokta has room to improve the TID resolution a bit more without dumbing it down & probably will.

There have been numerous youtube videos in the past few weeks exploiting this oddity.
Other brands of detectors seem to do better.
If you hunt parks in Beach mode, it seems to improve drastically.

With most Tesoro detectors, if you disc out pull tabs, you can get a dig signal with the two tabs touching the ring north and south and two more touching east and west and another piled on top, I have other detectors from XP, Fisher, Teknetics, Nokta, Garrett and Makro and none of these others will do it. All you have to do is turn up the disc like a coin check, and lower it back after you dig. Not bad for an old "obsolete" detector.

Whats funny is with 1.04 pull tabs rang up higher than nickels. Since the new updates pull tabs read in nickel area now .

Pull tabs do have a wide spread depending on age & type. Usually a site has a predominate smaller range. My standard Pull tab Notch is 29-34. I find M3 or single 4 kHz works best. Nickels can also vary depending on depth & corrosion & minerals from 20-26.
