More detecting issue's!

England has dealt with this issue from day one due to the Country's History.Maybe we need to organize things better so we do not lose the hobby all togther. If we started getting the archies involved ,and working with us..It might just open a few more areas up to hunt. They can buy my finds and put in a museum..Long as i have the film to remember it im happy. Its getting bad when they wont let you detect your own property tho...

I remember watching a video put out by someone others call the Rocket man. In this vid the Rocketman demonstrates how quickly he can dig up a target with a shovel, about and 8" wide shovel. When he was done it all made sense. He punched out an 8" x 8" plug, tossed a blanket on the ground and dug out the hole, tossing the dirt on the blanket and all for a quarter. Then he put it all back and the logic was it was easier to replace and repair a larger hole than a smaller one. Now, when the "greedy" newbies break into the hobby for all the loot they are going to find and get rich see this vid then what do you expect? I hunt with a thin blade knife and the usual 2.5" x 7" trowel. I have heard of a couple of guys with the long handled trowel/shovels st raped to their sides like a weapon roaming the parks I frequent. I have not seen them yet but the Park attendants I have befriended tell me about them and it ain't pretty. I can see shovels, even a back hoe on private private property you own or on an archaeological dig but in a public park? We are doomed when common sense fails -- Ever seen the Movie, Idiotocracy? It is about this very thing, the dumbing down -- I did meet a nice young fellow and gave him some helpful tips but he said a curious thing. He said he had just been cut back on his job so he thought he would take up Metal Detecting to make some money. I laughed but I think he was serious. He had just bought an New Garrett Ace 350 so he could go make money? Yowow is right, the Metal Detector celebrities, pumping up their stories have convinced someone there is a fortune to be made. Good luck -- Dan

There have always been a few bad apples, long before that certain detecting show hit the air.

But now, thanks to unreality TV, those few bad apples have increased exponentially. And the more bad apples we have in our bunch, the more problems we have.

Sometimes it's intentional, but often it's inexperience and/or a lack of common sense by some that causes problems for our hobby.

I'm not in the gloom and doom and metal detecting is close to extinct camp, but I'll agree that problems have increased noticably since that show premiered in 2012. Like many of you, I'm finding evidence of bad detecting etiquette way more than I used to.

But then again a lot of us, myself included, support that show by using products manufactured by the sponsor.
Sounds like you haven't lost any of your site's yet? Wait until you do and you will be gloom and doom also!

Now that you mentioned youtube, that would be a good place to start to spread the word about the WHAT to do and the WHAT not to do for newbies!!! just a few seconds in every serious hunter's metal detecting video. I mean something like "if your new to detecting and watching this video please don't ruin the hobby by"____________________________________________________________________________. Please keep in mind that VERY few people really make any money detecting, most folks just love to detect, its a hobby and its not really like the stuff you see on the TV shows.

Using large handled digging tools in public parks and sport fields.
Never leave the trash that you dig laying around, put it in a trash can, or take it with you.
Don't dig a hole any larger that you have to to retrieve the target, and don't practice digging in good hunting spots, use your own yard.
Always fill your hole and put the plug back.
Do your best to leave the area the way it was when you found it.

Every video, every TV show should have something in it to help protect the hobby, even if its just a helpful comment about protecting the hobby.

This would make a nice intro, this guy is going out hunting and he starts out the door with a shovel, then at the door you here him laugh and say, "good grief, I'm going to the park, I can't take a shovel to dig there"

There is a LOT of video's of hunters digging targets, the camera is rolling, why not take the time as your digging to point out how important it is to dig right and fill them back in, when the trash comes out, show how you bag it for the trash later.
I know its not possible to put everything in every video, but thousands of video's done by thousands of people, if each one just put a short segment in the video it would help to protect the hobby. Another thing, don't just show the Gold ring, silver dollar finds! show us the junk! or when you do find a nice find make a comment as to how its been a long time coming, or express the satisfaction of finely something good! or WOW, after hundreds of pieces of junk and clad coins I finely found something really nice.

How can we protect the hobby?
How about Social Media!
Got a facebook page?
Youtube?

It sure isn't helping. JMHO.

Harold unless they live where we do they don't understand.

In my area in many parks if it is long handled no matter the digging end size..Your going to get thrown out and banned.. End Of story..

Several parks have banned detecting due to shovels being used by newbies, and some old timers who feel the need for long handled devices..

How do I know this caused the ban in some parks. The Police officer who advised me stated why... and asked nicely I leave...

I see a day in the future many more areas will be off limits...

Its a real shame they wont let an OLD MAN who needs the dam exercise use a long handled spade becuse hes having trouble moving anymore. If he does it carefully and has the same end result whats the diffrence.Just another reason for people to complain about another clean hobby. They would rather he go back to the nursing home and sit quitely .Omg martha..that fella has a long handled spade! Whats this town coming too...

What??? Archies working with you??? OH MY GOODNESS,, I'VE HEARD IT ALL NOW.....

Sorry I do not agree. NO NEED for a long hand shovel it just does not look right.
I'M 70 and only dig with a small hand held and never more then 3-4 inches deep. I never hunt school yards/sport fields too many other places to hunt.

This is what I encountered the other day in the woods, my lesche is there to show scale. This was one of the many holes these ijits left.

I don't think the people doing this are apt to be on this forum but another one where to me it appears every new person ends up after they watch diggers and Google metal detecting..

Something you need to expect woods hunting is animals to dig your holes BACK up..I have seen it time and time again revisiting areas the day after and seeing my own holes I filled tore open.Looked like i left it that way.Coons, fox, coyotes think another animal buried something to come back too..just looking for a free meal.Im not sure what we can do about that. But around here we have to expect it.I hope people would re-fill in the woods as well as anywhere else.Just use your foot and scoop it in,tamp it down once.

What country are you hunting in? where I hunt if a find a silver dollar, its MINE! I have no plans on turning anything I find "IN" If I find a huge pile of gold, I will just disappear!! No pictures, no videos, no trying to figured out if it was stolen from the mint 140 years ago!

Mark, I think she might be quoting what someone has said to her. I can't imagine an MD'r feeling that way.

Please explain!

Not a beach hunter, but i understand that sometimes finds and all junk have to be shown where detecting is allowed by permit only like on some State Park beaches.
But i never heard of not keeping 'keepers' in those areas. I think they're only interested that you collect and dispose the trash dug up.

In my many years of detecting. I have found an occasional hole dug back up by an animal. Unfortunately this is the condition that I found at four sites across my county recently that I have now spent the time covering up. Like I mentioned on another forum I spoke about this, I would hate to meet the furry woodland creature that wears a size 12 Timberland bootprint around the open holes I found.

Slobs that ruin hobbies, have always been around. There in hunting, fishing, you name it.There really just a dirt ball, that wants quick gratification without finding knowledge. I do be leave most if not all the MD shows, have created a new generation of these dirt ball. Sad state, But we have to monitor and try to educate them, OH boy.
