Monte, I just cannot win with KELLEYCO ..... RE: EXcelerator Coil

As I mentioned last week I have not had good luck with Kelleyco but you had persuaded me into purchasing a 5 inch EXcelerator coil for my MXT. Well a package arrived today and instead of being delivered an EXcelerator coil they sent me a HOTHEAD Ferret coil.....The order form clearly stated a 5 inch EXcelerator Coil.
I was really hoping to put the EXcelerator Coil through it's paces this weekend. Our club has an outing planned in the Colorado Gold country and I figured that would be the best place to test it out.
Well needless to say that won't happen and I am back to not being all that favorable to the folks in Winter Springs, Fl.
So I continue to wait and will eventually let you know what I think of the coil when I receive it. I think you can figure out how I feel about their ordering department.........

What would it explain? I just ordered the 5 " hoping I will get one that works as it seems so many do not work. At least everyone says Kellyco stands behind them if they are bad coils.

If you look at the coil style of the EXcelerator and the coil style of the Ferret, they do not match in any way. And even the bar code on the box (under the UPS label) calls it a ferret coil. It does not make sense to me that they would roll out the EXcelerator line (fanfare and such.)and then package them in the HOTHEAD coil line. That makes for bad business.
And if that were the case then why has no one else caught this variation before me???
Yes Whites has boatloads of different "lable type" coils but they are all the same. This is a case where we are talking two entirely different lines of coils.
I sent KELLYCO an e-mail and we will see where that takes me.

All kinds of things. It seems to me (just from what I've been told by many different people that many of the coils are bad and don't work. One person told me they had 3 different ones that would not work at all. However, everyone says if you get one that will work they are wonderful. I don't know just going on what people have told me and I have heard numerous people say theirs had to be sent back.

It just would have been nice to know that that is what they did. A note in the box or on their website works wonders for me in that regard.

Several of my customers seeking help and guidance have brought me their Detectors connected to "Hot Heads" and I learned a couple of things....
With regard to the Hot Head 5" for the XLT, in order to refresh my memory, I JUST now compared it to the Bullseye 5.3 and found that the Bullseye had a significantly wider window. The audio was a bit smoother on the Bullseye. The Bullseye definitely reached out farther, by about two inches in the Discrimination Mode. This was only a quick air test which is only one indicator.
Years ago, a gentleman brought over his White's 6000 Di Pro with a 10" Hot Head. We walked over to my front test garden and conducted a comparison between it and White's standard 8" Concentric Loop. White's Standard Loop gave a superior audio response on an 8" deep quarter with more consistant target ID. The 10" Hot Head broke up over the quarter. In this particular case, I suspected that 60 cycle was again factoring against the larger Hot Head.
In the All Metal Mode, the Hot Head would reach out about 20% deeper with a broader flater response.
Another thing to consider is that with all the different models out there, it is difficult to develope and design a loop that works in both the All Metal and Discrimination Mode. The Discrimnation Mode on a motion based metal detector creates design challenges. The 12" Hot Shot for the MXT and newly Designed Bigfoot took over a year of re-design and developement to get the loop geometry correct and optimized for JUST those two models.
I've tried the NEWEST Excelerator 14" and I still prefer the Applied Creativity-Jimmy Sierra 12" Hot Shot for Depth, Accurate ID etc.
On my 9" Clad Dime in a rear yard test garden away from 60 cycle, the 12" Hot Shot not only gave me a response and target ID, I could lift the coil up an additional 3" and get a repeatable signal. The Excelerator would not respond at all!
When it comes for area coverage, the 18" x 3.5" Bigfoot is the Supreme Cherry Picker with up to 10Xs more area coverage.
Of course, it goes without saying (and I'll say it again) Applied Creativity Search Coils are 'APPROVED' by White's Electronics.

As for the hot heads I have never used one. As for the 14 inch excelerator not hitting a nine inch dime I say B.S! Sounds like you may be trying to push your coils. Not trying to be a smart a$$ but I know this coil will sound off and Id dimes at 9 inches. Test beds are not always a great judge either, the mineral composition will never be like that of the soil where a coin has sank into the ground on it's own. Settings affect this big coil to. It is designed to work better with lower disc settings and on the mxt does better in relic mode. maybe you had bad luck with the coil you had But I'd give you my mxt if the excellerator wont sound off on a nine inch dime. Just my 2 cents worth.

In reference to your post entitled: Just for the record.....If this turns out to be a repackaging I have no problem admitting I jumped the gun and will freely apologize to KELLYCO on this forum. So, did Kellyco make a mistake in shipping or do we get to see you apologize to Kellyco on this forum????? Inquiring minds want to know.

Since some of the past couple weeks posts have disappeared, I got to thinking that maybe Kellyco had responded to Butchs' question about the Excelerator coil he ordered and the Hot Head coil he received. Or maybe Butch had shared the information with all of us and that post got dumped. So, still wanting to know the difference between the Excelerator coil and a new Hot Head coil, I went right to the source. I called Kellyco. The word I got was that, in this instance, it was the same coil. Just different "packaging". Sorry if I missed the first report or even the second one. But as I said before, inquiring minds want to know. Now I do.

...I added my apology to KellyCo shortly after I had received a phone call from JW and an e-mail from their customer service department. They have changed their marketing of the EXcelerator Coil and renamed it as the ferret coil.
So far I am very impressed with the way it pinpoints but have not really given it a good test. The weather here has not been all that accomodating for hunting. More to come about the coil soon I hope....

Thanks for the update AND for stepping up to the plate. Keep us posted as to the coil's performance. HH

The Excelerator is just that-- not a Hot Head, not a Ferret-- ck their site. Hot Head makes a ferret model.
Detech in Germany makes the Excelerators. Hope we can get this straight just once!
