Mode with most stable VDI Numbers

I am a parks and schools coin and jewelry hunter. My Simplex is fully updated to v2.77. Being in the US, I appreciate the tone breaks in the new Park 1 mode. I am also really liking the mute function.

Still trying to settle on my favorite mode for my style of hunting. I like the Field mode with iron tones turned down to one. I get the feeling that it gives me good depth, and I'll dig the repeatable signal. But I think I'm seeing a lot of VDI variability in both Field and Park 1. So I find that if I switch to Beach mode and swing over the target, I seem to see a more tight and stable VDI. This is all after pinpointing to get the sweet spot.

Anybody else finding a tighter VDI readout in one mode than another? Just curious..

There will be virtually no difference at all with any mode in my opinion. The single frequency detectors all have reasonable VDI number accuracy compared to the multi freq detectors which are better.

I do some urban Coin & Jewelry Hunting on occasions, but spend the bulk of my detecting time in heavily littered old-use sites. Ghost towns, homesteads, gold mining camps, logging camps, out-of-the-way places like the sites of old churches, schools, dance halls, etc. I updated my Simplex + to Ver. 2.76 and it is working fine, but I am handicapped due to only having the stock 11" DD which, for me, is a 'larger-size' search coils. I need smaller coils t better handle hunting in and around all of the ferrous debris and a little bit of non-ferrous debris, an hopefully those will be out this month.

Due to search coil size, there can be too many targets in the EMF at the same time and that is going to hamper getting a good, functional and 'proper' numeric VDI read-out. Still, the performance of the different search modes can play a roll as well when it comes to VDI reporting and ';lock-on' potential.

Once we get a good smaller-size coil or two, I'll be working quite a bit with the Simplex + in those Iron Nail and other ferrous debris-filled old sites just to see how it will do. I have a feeling it is going to work reasonably well, but there is a lot of masking trash to deal with, and due to that we very seldom get a very usable VDI read-out. If you are encountering iron Nails at siome of you sites, and since you lack a smaller-size coils, it will be difficult to get a good vidual report uless you are in a low-target area.

The bulk of the Coins, Trade Tokens and other smaller-size keepers I find come from surface to about 4" to 5" depths. Most any mode will produce a consistent VDI report in areas w/o a lot of nearby offending metal, and the former Park and new Park 2 mode is usually the least consistent on VDI's on targets at mid-depth and deeper. Due to only having the 11" DD coil, most of my Coin Hunting has been out in the middle of wide-open parks with minimal targets. If you've followed most of my posts about the Simplex + since last November, you will have reported that I have my Simplex + ready to start-up at turn-on in the Beach mode. I have enjoyed a little 'cleaner' audio and more consistent VDI reports in Beach mode.

One reason is because I like the cleaner audio in the 2-Tone Beach mode because it lacks the VCO enhanced audio we have in the Field mode. I have all my Disc. modes set to '0' Disc., no rejection, so I can get an audible hit on any target, ferrous or non-ferrous. When I got into a few areas where Iron Nails or other similar trash got too annoying, I'd go to the Field mode and take advantages of the Iron Audio Volume, set at '1'.

With the new update and the added Park 1 mode, I am very impressed and have made a change in my mode selection. Now, in a more littered environment, I will usually start in the processed 3-Tone Park 1, preferring it to the Park 2 mode for several reasons, including the better Tone break for our USA coins. My 2nd-pick mode is Beach, then Field. If low-to-moderate trash, then I use beach mode and opt for Park 1 as a 2nd choice. These two usually provide a little 'edge' in VDI accuracy, at least for me with my Simplex +.

Perhaps very little difference at times, however I disagree with you simply because the modes have different behavior and that can bring out different results. The new Park 2 mode is especially fast response-and-recover and has limited detection depth compared with the other modes, thus it won't produce repeatable VDI's like the other models. Park 1, Field and Beach modes can also have some differences in recovery time and a little different VDI consistency as depth increases, oir when in modestly trashy environments.. Usually more consistent on shallow to mid-depth targets, but beyond that there is some different performance behavior, and some of those differences are also affected by the ground mineral make-up, too.

Also, the Field mode is VCO enhanced and Beach is not, and at times I believe the added signal processing for the VCO can have a bit of negative effect on the Target ID accuracy. Maybe not a major influence, but some effect in some circumstances.

That's an often-heard 'blanket statement' I disagree with. I've used Multi-Frequency detectors from several manufactures, including Minelab since the '90s, and while at times they can be quite good, they are not 'better' than a lot of Single-Frequency detectors. They don't always work better, hunt deeper, or sort of the good targets from adjacent trash as well, either. ALL detectors are-what-they-are. They all have strengths and weaknesses so we need to select them individually for what they can do for us in the different site environments we hunt.

I have my top picks for the very dense Iron contaminated sites I hunt, some for making quick work of tot-lots, and some that make great 'cruising unit' for a lot of urban Coin & Jewelry Hunting needs. Most of what I have and use today are Single-Frequency models because thy happen to excel at specific tasks and do things even the more recent Multi-Frequency models can't. But I haven't ignored Multi-Frequency units either since I have two of the Vanquish 540's. Why not something different? Because they do what I want and need, and in some side-by-side comparisons they out-perform the EQ-800. We use what works for us, and in doing so I've confirmed that Multi's are not always 'better' at reporting proper VDI's than Single-Frequency's.

Monte, am looking at the Simplex as a backup for jewelry hunting. I know the Anfibio is one of the few machines that will "see" a coin next to iron both ways NSEW. Could you see if the Simplex might do the same? On another subject have heard Nokta may be coming out with a larger concentric coil. This with a smaller coil would make a nice 1-2 punch.

I almost always use park 1 mode I’ve learned it pretty well and the I’d numbers are stable
