But not pennies as vinegar & salt corrodes copper! You might try baking soda & water on them --Not sure as I haven't dug up or cleaned coins for years! But salt & vinegar sure does clean Clad Nickels, Quarters & Dimes but some do need some scrubbing additionally when I cleaned them by hand; especially the edges--never had a rock tumbler! Many of mine have corroded green again as I still have most of my clads & definitely the silver I soaked in baking soda removed the black without scrubbing or rubbing--looks like I will need to clean many of my clad again to get rid of them! Ma is a put offer because of poor health & now cannot drive! Terrible to have to depend on others! Ma Betty

I use apple cider vinegar and salt on the cents and white vinegar and salt on clad and tumble for 30 minutes. DO NOT MIX CENTS AND CLAD, as has be mentioned. HH jim tn

Vinegar and salt works fine for dimes, nickels and quarters. But pennies react to the solution and will build up a gas in the tumbler and force the lid of. Dont ask me how i know. HAD IT HAPPEN THREE TIMES BEFORE I WISED UP. Yes i can be a slow learner some times.

yep...it will blow the top and you have a greenish colored mess....I use just a handful of aquarium gravel and throw the coins on the gravel.... add a tablespoon of salt......and just cover the coins with vinegar ...the tumbler does all the work. Too much salt and vinegar will also blow the top off.
