Minelab Equinox vs. The E-TRAC

I think it started out "has the potential to obsolete all single frequency detectors" then they went to hell with it in for a penny in for a pound and said "obsoletes all single frequency detectors" my question is does that mean it obsoletes itself ? :poke:

I'm not confused at all. All metal detectors detect metal. Some are better than others, doesn't change the fact they all detect metal. You obviously missed the point.

Or has the EQ really eclipsed all those other VLF like that brilliant MARKETING tactic claims? And the Max is still the best selling detector.

Again, you are confusing function with purpose and ability. A wheel barrow and a pickup truck both serve the same function of moving goods from point A to point B. The wheel barrow is made obsolete by the vehicle because it completely revolutionizes, and maximizes the ability of the wheelbarrow. In 1865 there was a metal detector to find the bullet in Lincolns body, but that is completely antiquated and obsolete by current detectors. just because they both go "beep" does not make them equal. I am sorry you refuse to comprehend this.

Maybe you should look up the definition of confusing. Curious, how many trips to the store have you made in your wheelbarrow ? How many times have you hauled mulch from the front yard to the back yard in your truck ?

My wife can buy a $5.00 purse at Wal Mart or a $5000.00 Fendi purse. They will carry the same stuff. ........ By this time next year there will likely be a "new magic wand" on the market.

You are confusing brand name with function. All purses do the same thing, they are a bag with pockets. Please list ONE other VLF detector that can change frequency without changing the coil, AND can run single or multi freqs, AND is fully functional on salt beaches, AND is waterproof, AND is capable of updating software without sending it in to the manufacturer.

Can you name one? Or has the EQ really eclipsed all those other VLF like that brilliant MARKETING tactic claims? I can tell you it was marketing genius because look at how many people it has talking!

I'LL name 3 machines that can change frequencies or run multi. The 20 year old whites dfx which run on either 5 or 15 khz or both. The the 3 frequencies v3i or vx3 and you can see each frequency with each frequency's reading shown as a different color on the graphs and get a vdi number based on their combined output.

The Terra can change freqs too and on 1 coil. Can't mention the coil.

I am not expecting the Equinox to beat the Etrac or 3030. I just want something light enough for me and my bad arthritic back to use for more than ten minutes. I do think the Equinox is going to be a superior target ID detector in iron and trash even if it does not quite match the other two in depth.

In that case I don't expect the Fisher f2 to beat the etrac or ctx and its light weight...and its out now

I have had a F2 and really liked it. The depth was never that great but it was a coin magnet. I am locked in to Minelabs now and do expect the Nox to be considerably deeper than an F2.

Wouldn't that make the nox as deep as the etrac then if it's considerably deeper?...I found 7" quarters With my f2..

Gentlemen,
I thought I would chime in and let you know that my second best selling detector is the E-TRAC. With all the information about the Equinox, the sales of E-TRACs hasn't slowed down, it's better than usual. I talk to a lot of my customers at length and most believe that Minelab will not "shoot their self in the foot" by introducing a detector for $899 that will out perform the E-TRAC (or CTX 3030)
I have hunting over 40 years and I will have to say that the E-TRAC is one of the best if not the best coin machine I have ever used. I have got deep silver/copper coins that other very high-end detectors didn't see. I have seen these guys threaten to wrap their machines around a tree because I told them what was there and they said it wasn't.
Minelab's advertising said "single freq. detector obsolete", how is going to compare against the FBS detectors. (rambling) 15-18" + in wet sand is no problem with these
detectors. Will the Equinox do that ? I don't know but I want to know.
Please, don't bad-mouth me, just thinking out loud... Best to all and HH, Richard/ Backwoods Detectors

BTW, E-TRACs have held their value in the used market, cleaned used with no warranty are going from $700-$800, clean with warranty $850-$950

Hi Richard which is your #1 selling unit if E Trac is #2?

How many of you were around in the 70's when VLF changed the face of detecting for ever? Did they shoot themselves in the foot by releasing VLF?

I been in the hobby a very long time.I used many different brands over the years. Its amazing to me how one detector can create so much hoopla on here, but its interesting to read.I dont think VLFs are going away anytime soon,Theres plenty of great machines out there,Heck some of my best gold finds came from a simple TR machine back in the day.Its all about location and getting the coil over the target and putting in the time and yes some of the machines out there are way to heavy for this old guy to be swinging around. But to some it up here Im not getting to excited until they come out with a machine that can tell the difference between canslaw aluminum and gold in a trashy park then we can all have something worth talking about,,Keep digging and COVER them holes,,

I really don't see the Equinox making any other detector "obsolete". Heck, look at the Compadre. Still doing just fine in a world of high tech detectors that makes the Compadre look like a horse and buggy on the Autobahn.

I still think even the E-Trac/CTX will continue to remain at the top.

Obsolete is probably a stretch , but if they are coming out with a new technology that everyone wants.....or atleast wishes they had , thats probably going to change the minds of anyone wanting the others. May as well be obsolete.

Looks like the only way to know for sure is to actually get one out in the field if they ever get here.

Actually minelabs older gold machine, I think called the Eureka had several freqs thru one coil

I'LL name 3 machines that can change frequencies or run multi. The 20 year old whites dfx which run on either 5 or 15 khz or both. You are ignoring half of my post. I didnt say name a detector doing ONE THING, I said name one that can do ALL things as the EQ.

No one is ignoring it, just pointing out some similarities with other detectors.
Your post is correct.
When the at pro came out you could have made a similar statement

Neil --

To clarify, when you say "a lot of them do," are you talking about Tom(Conn)'s statement about a detector creating so much hoopla?

When I first read it, I thought you were saying "a lot of them do" to the part of Tom's post about "a machine that can tell the difference between can slaw aluminum and gold in a trashy park..."

But then I read it again and concluded that you had to have been talking about the "hoopla" part...and that other machines, like the AT Max, have also created a lot of hoopla on the forum, pre-release.

Steve
