Hey...I hunt the heck out of MKG..South to Holland, and North to Whitehall, east to Coopersville, Allandale, etc......parks, beaches etc...start out a little slow if you can, try not to dig any holes at first, just use a screwdriver...you will thank me later..
Try not to get seen by anyone...find a nice private spot to practice...thats generally not a school or sportsfield...those are not the spots to practice..
Anyway, you will meet a whole bunch of guys this Spring, some will be friendly, some not...no matter, if you are really hooked on this sport, you will begin to recognize a few of the same guys over and over, go up and say "hi" and introduce yourself..after a few meetings in all sorts of weather, you might exchange digits...especially if you have a good place to hunt that you "invite" them to...like a big private property piece....
My first year out I ran into a guy who has a lot of experience and heres what he told me to do..."dig 1000 pennys, and dig 1000 pulltabs with nothing but a screwdriver" it was the best advice I ever got! We are still friends if you can imagine that!
Anyway, MKG has gotten pounded over the years for old silver...still, every once in a while you will find one. I'm a clad stabber, and hunt jewelry, very fast and shallow...I'm no good to you if you are after old silver. I might see you out there sometime, that is if you are up super early, I tend to be invisible so you might not ever see me at all.
As you progress through this sport, you will find like minded guys with similar hunting interests and styles to call and share things with...theres a few of us that communicate about conditions and schedules and try to help each other, but we rarely hunt together...just one of those things, its a solitary sport for the most part, and most serious guys wont share any of their hunting sites with you unless you reciprocate in some fashion, and they get to know you a little...just being up front here with what I've experienced regarding our area..Good Luck!
