Michigan anybody?

Ya when they say it is cleaned out, it just means the opposite, they want it all to themselves :detecting:

What about the lake shore, soccer fields and play grounds, parks and such

Hey...I hunt the heck out of MKG..South to Holland, and North to Whitehall, east to Coopersville, Allandale, etc......parks, beaches etc...start out a little slow if you can, try not to dig any holes at first, just use a screwdriver...you will thank me later.. Try not to get seen by anyone...find a nice private spot to practice...thats generally not a school or sportsfield...those are not the spots to practice..
Anyway, you will meet a whole bunch of guys this Spring, some will be friendly, some not...no matter, if you are really hooked on this sport, you will begin to recognize a few of the same guys over and over, go up and say "hi" and introduce yourself..after a few meetings in all sorts of weather, you might exchange digits...especially if you have a good place to hunt that you "invite" them to...like a big private property piece....

My first year out I ran into a guy who has a lot of experience and heres what he told me to do..."dig 1000 pennys, and dig 1000 pulltabs with nothing but a screwdriver" it was the best advice I ever got! We are still friends if you can imagine that!

Anyway, MKG has gotten pounded over the years for old silver...still, every once in a while you will find one. I'm a clad stabber, and hunt jewelry, very fast and shallow...I'm no good to you if you are after old silver. I might see you out there sometime, that is if you are up super early, I tend to be invisible so you might not ever see me at all.

As you progress through this sport, you will find like minded guys with similar hunting interests and styles to call and share things with...theres a few of us that communicate about conditions and schedules and try to help each other, but we rarely hunt together...just one of those things, its a solitary sport for the most part, and most serious guys wont share any of their hunting sites with you unless you reciprocate in some fashion, and they get to know you a little...just being up front here with what I've experienced regarding our area..Good Luck!:detecting:.
Mud..

Yeah!...well Fruitport actually, and yes, I have hunted the heck out of that place, and intend to ransack the hell out of it again this year!...if you go and back track my posts, you will see I am pretty bloodthirsty..
Every year theres a whole new crop of hunters, so a guy just has to pay their "dues" so to speak....you invite an old good hunter into some of your private good spots, and they will be willing to help you out, but theres not enough time to try to teach everybody that wants to learn, you know? Sounds cold typing this to you, but its the honest truth! I'm not in this as a hobby...I intend to make some serious jack...
Mud.

Mud, I'm not new to detecting, been doing it several years both in Colorado and Michigan. For me it's a hobby and I don't have any hot new secret places to search. I'm hoping to do more private property this year. Roger

Oh..sorry...well in that case...you got a good grip on the generals...you know what is fun? You can get up on those dunes and find some old stuff...its a hike though, tough walking, but if you are in good shape, you will get to some places most old guys would not attempt! I also take my boat up the MKG river and hunt the old logging campsites and stuff...I look forward to meeting you someday!
I will do all I can to help you get the lay of the land around here, cant help myself!...I'm out early and home by 9am mostly..
Mud

Home by 9 am!! I'll be 70 next week, and I'm usually not up by 9 am. That dune walking sounds like fun, but I'm afraid I'm way to far out of shape. Just starting to get out for walks; need to loose some gut and get some strength back in my legs. Got to head to Walker, I'm painting the interior of my sister's house so she can sell it and move back to Muskegon. We grew up in Muskegon many years ago, then I moved away and just came back about three years ago. I always thought the reason I wasn't finding much was that these Hollanders pinched a penny too hard to loose it, but now I find out it your fault. Anyway, good hunting this year, hope our paths cross. Roger

OK man...me too...grew up here, keep moving away and coming back!..lived in 7 other States, but keep coming back! Let me think of some good places to put you on some silver...I'll do my best.
you know, keep an eye on the sidewalk tearouts...i'm just a pup...be 55 in April...

Roger, I have been hunting since 1960, started with an old radio Shack BFO, (man those were the days). I am also from Michigan, but I am in Redford (too dam near Detroit). But, I have been hunting foreclosed properties in the motor city. I have a neighbor that keeps watch on me, with a shotgun across his lap, he doesn't hunt (detecting), have had some wary druggies ask what I'm doing and my neighbor tells them to keep on moving:surrender:. My screen name on http://www.greatlakesmetaldetecting.com is Pezhead. Check out their site, it is mostly Michigan hunters, a few are from Nebraska, some from canada, but most are from Michigan. nge

NGE! I grew up on the east side of Detroit in the 60s..(South of GrossePointe) I always wanted to get back in some of those old neighborhoods and swing coil!.... MKG is one small but dangerous place, you wouldnt think so, compared to Detroit, which is a big and dangerous place, MKG is a smaller footprint, but pretty dang dangerous for an old guy to venture into....
I work the Heights on really cold and windy days, spitting snow, rain or sleet...like in mid/late November, and then its heads up and fast hunting...

Both places have some really old dirt, but without a heavily armed buddy, nearly off limits...maybe someday....'bout once a year a guy can make an early run and clean up between the MurderMart and the Stop-N-Rob..

i'm gonna pull a gold coin out of MKG this year, thats the plan anyway...

Well, I am hunting near home. I share a border with Destroyit. So I just go across the street and i street more and hunt houses that were built between 1912 and 1950. I have found silver dimes, quarters and halves at only 1/2 inch deep. Nothing deeper than 6 inches and it is mostly sandy loam with a little bit of clay mixed in. My only problem is...long grass. Sometimes I wait for the banks to send the grass mowers in, then hit them the next day.....NGE

I'm with you Mud, I grew up in the Heights and would really like to detect where the old Glendale school used to be, or Roosevelt school, that's just sitting empty but has been there since around the turn of the century. The park downtown on Broadway is another place. Really makes me sad and mad as hell that we have to put up with their crap. Maybe if we had enough guys...... I've actually had dreams of sitting on the roof of a building with a sniper rifle. Sorry, guess I need a happy pill. Roger

Yep MIsilver...the old Moon School got a playground resurface a few years back...some guys went in there and pulled barbers and walkers and all sorts of old silver stuff...lots of old dirt in the MKG...just hard to get to it without big risk...I'm pretty sure theres some gold coins in town, most likely on the bottom of the MKG Lake though. Lots of old schools got closed last year and consolidated, theres a few pockets of old dirt, alleys, whatnot...but dang its dangerous! That ballfield on Laketon would be halfway decent to get into some day, if they leave the gates open...the old boys like my Dad talk about a big wooden fence around that field back in the day..yep, west of town out on the way to PereMarquette has some old dirt, found some silver there...curbstripping and looking for a tear out in the old Glendale neighborhood got me some stuff last year...right across from that bandshell park place? Theres old silver left, its just really scarce...what rig are you swinging now a days?

Amen NGE, I've been exposed to the Son! Haven't been detecting since the '60's, just got the bug in the '90's. Sure wish I had a friend with a shotgun to go with me, but I just stick to places where I feel safe. Can't go to the neighborhood that I know best and where I grew up, it's just too dangerous. I think they need more exposure to the Son and less to drugs and alcohol. God Bless, happy hunting! Roger

Hi Mud, Didn't want you to feel bad about not leaving anything in the ground for the next guy :twodetecting: Found these at a ball field about 1/2 mile from the house. This same field has yielded three silvers including a standing liberty quarter. Sure hope this snow melts fast. Roger
