Manual vs Auto Sensitivity in Mineralized Soil

Your on the right track with the test garden this well give you your best imfo as compared to asking other people with different dirt.
Now I would check how far you can detect a dime with each coil if you have a 6 or stock coil if you only have the stock coil then see what setting give the best depth .

The 6 inch coil in my ground well go to 8 inches no problem the stock well go to 10 now where my sense #s are lower say 15 where the machine wants to run at then I can generally run the 6 much hotter than the stock because it sees less ground .
With that said the 6 well go deeper than the stock coil with less chatter also try seawater enable and see what the difference is .

I would run in ground coin or high trash , to get additional depth your going to have to run in pinpoint sizing all metal you still have trace working and you can flip back to ground coin with a flip of the button to check targets out this well give you up to 2 inches more depth .

When running in pinpoint sizing pay more attention to the bottom curser to see if it iron or not this takes patience but well give you better depth .

Ground balancing manually well help but you have to constantly monitor it which is a pain in itself .

I would try on the dime first in your test garden and see what works best this is where you well get your best settings You have lot's of test to do bigger coil smaller coil and so forth but in the end you will get what works in your soil . waiting for results . sube

Thanks for the comments Sube, great information and comments as always!

I currently only have the stock coil, though I am considering expanding my coil inventory this spring... just not sure if I want to go with the 6 or 17 first.

I just started my test garden, with clad dimes at 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11"... and copper memorials at 3, 5 and 7" to start. I plan on expanding the garden with more targets in the days to come. I decided to include some shallow targets as a level set when I start testing settings, and other machines. I havent tried to detect.the new targets yet (i will this afternoon), but I also plan on leaving the targets there for good, and hopefully get some halo effect in them by the end of summer or next spring.

I have a few different pattens that I run, one is open in combined, and I currently have that set to ground coin. I have a pattern the is open in the middle (similar to the coins or dr. Tones pattern) that I have set in combined ferrous coin or 50 tone ferrous coin. And I have a more disc'd pattern, for trashier areas, in 50 tone high trash.

I have been running the pinpointing as standard, Are you saying that sizing will give you a little more depth? Ill try that.

Results of my new test garden to follow!

Glad to see a few more comments on this post and a couple WA people too. I've been running the CTX since late 2013 and I still haven't learned all of it's capabilities.
I switch back and forth between A+3 and Manual depending on the day I'm having. A+3 when I feel like cruising in relative quiet and digging only those solid signals and Manual when I'm at a known old site and haven't dug any or just a few silver or wheats.
I live about 2 East of Vancouver, along the Gorge and grew up in Clarkston, WA... small world.

Hey Flysar,

I appreciate you starting this thread a few years back... I'm glad you commented again. Very small world with the Washington connection... maybe we can find some time to get out and curse the PNW soil together this spring. I'm sure I could pick up many CTX pointers from you!

Tim, Sounds like a good idea, I may learn something fresh and new from you! I sent you a PM with my number. Del

The ground balance feature is something that isn't needed for the vast majority of CTX users, but when you are getting single digit sensitivity numbers, you should give it a try (if you haven't already been using it)

Thanks Jason, The Ground Balance Enable (check or uncheck) question had me confused at first... and I had been hunting with it checked (so I could hit the GB button, and pump the coil until the machine told me it was balance). The ironic thing is... I thought that meant I was auto GB... so inadvertently... I was taking your advice to doing the manual GB. I currently have it in auto... but will definitely remember to check the box and pump the soil when I get into the single digit suggested sens areas.
