There is absolutely the phenomenon of “too much choice”. I have been at the store before and decided to see if they had an item. Turns out they had multiple/many versions of these items and after going back and forth amongst the choices I wound up not buying anything! It’s not that I didn’t want it, it’s that the process of deciding WHICH one became more work than the item was worth having. Crazy? It’s a real thing, and indecision can be a huge time waster and hunt killer when it comes to detectors. I’ve always believed that it is WAY better to come up with a set of settings to hunt for exactly what you’re looking for and do NOT mess with it except for the big settings….GB, sens, etc. I have also found that sweep speed and technique are overlooked to the point where “extra settings” can’t make up for it. I have watched COUNTLESS videos where people skip 1/2 the ground they’re hunting, and then are amazed when they come back and find other things later. Was it the extra choice of settings? In SOME cases it can be. Truth be told, I believe any mid high range machine made after around 2000 can see most targets others will see. What percentage? Not sure, it’s just a gut feeling. I’ve found plenty with my current new machine that I didn’t find before, but I don’t know the specific reason why. A machine that you’re really comfortable with SHOULD produce more because you have that connection with the language of it. Might another machine see more things because of the operating system or the overall technology is different? Perhaps, but not with an operator who doesn’t like using it, IMO
Very few people post about their finds because then everyone in town would be in their spot.I does not matter what machine is used, like others have said, I also do not use social media, for the life of me I cannot understand why anyone will post every detail about their life, then cry when a negative comment is made.Or that the Equinox was going to obsolete all other detectors.I think the 50 % is 50% more BS than they laid on us in the past. I don't think the Manticore made the splash they thought it would. I read most of the forums and only see a handful of Manticore users posting. I don't do Facebook or other like media so maybe there are more users than I realize. To me it seems the D2 and even the Legend are out pacing it. When was the last time you saw specials on a supposedly flagship machine before it was out less than a year ? And a 25 % price increase, Please.
This is very true, I just made a comment about missing targets in another topic, physically being able to see a coin, but the machine(s) did not. Which is why when you go back over the area, you find more.
Agree to disagree. I like the Manticore, mostly because of the screen, but it is always a judgement call. Everyone says to only dig round objects on the center line, I have dug blobs, with jumpy numbers,, above the line only to find multiple coins, makes you wonder if the manticore was worth the price. It also has passed good targets (wheat cents) that could be seen with my eyeball, just because it was surrounded by nails. It has done this in both somewhat clean parks to trashy old home sites, newer coins and older coins, as well as the legend.
This is where the manticore has impressed me. Just to be clear for comparison sake, I have owned and used a Deus XP (first gen), Minelab Explorer SE, Nokta Anfibio, Fisher F75, Teknetics T2, CZ-5, Whites Spectrum XLT, Tesoro Cortes, Minelab Excalibur, and a Tesoro tiger shark (along with lower end models). The Explorer SE has routinely found targets at roughly 16” for me. I think we are at the point with detectors where depth is not really a factor anymore. What impressed me most about the manticore is its ability to separate targets and identify each. I frequently see three targets under the same coil swing and can frequently/accurately identify what they are with one major exception…. I hate that dimes and pennies are almost impossible to tell apart on the manticore when my explorer SE does it with ease. Target separation is the strongest attribute to the manticore in my humble opinion.
Not to change the subject, but I do like how everything seems to be shifting from depth tp target ID. I think we have all pretty much accepted that the depth of current VLF technology has reached maximum. Now it is separation and target ID that take center stage. I like it. Saves me a lot of digging LOL.
Oddly enough I feel like target ID is getting worse when it comes to the dime/penny range. Everything else is gtg

I chose the manticore for the screen. Hoping it has the old Explorer's magic. Jury is still out on that.

I agree the BBS of the Sovereign was great and will say I use the SunRay meter, but by the tones alone plus the meter reading it ID like no other detector I have ever used. For me this was a turn and a go detector and dont have a lot of setting to adjust or mis adjust, just by slowing down your swing of the coil and listening to those tone.
I wish you luck as it sounds like you are a beach hunter. I have a friend on the treasure coast in Florida that spends his time down there in the winter, then back in Minn in the spring to do lnd detecting and water hunting in the spring and summer .
stock coil 11 inch., even picked up coins and moved to new spot, it still would not read it, yet at other spots in same area if multiple coins are close by, all are hit, defective machine?
