As an intro. I didn't get around to posting about the hunt prior to these 2 which I scored 4 silver dimes including a seated to give me my second dime trifecta for the year. The area, only a couple hundred yards from my honeyhole has given up silver and Ihps in the past.
Last Saturday I met up with FFM Ryan aka Diabolic at the old park. We started at an overgrown area that had been recently cleared. Turned out to be fill. With no more than a few clad coins after a couple hours we headed over to where I hit the 4 dimes on my last outing. I picked up my first Buff and wheat on the way over. When there I started in an area of the hillside I hadn't got to yet. Ryan went off in another direction, On the day he would only get some clad and a few relics. Which is strange because he is usually the one to get silver when we meet up. First coiny signal was a solid 25 and a Buff showed up from maybe 3in. down. Not far away A 70-71 from just under a blown down tree branch jumps out at me. Expecting a wheat I see a nice small black coin. At this point the only question was, A Barber or a Merc ? A worn 1917 Merc revealed herself to me and I said "Hello Beautiful ". A 50-51 signal gave me a gold plated cuff link. It looked like the real deal but the numbers were too high for gold. Almost forgot. I had a heartstopper moment. After the Merc and before the cufflink I got a perfect tone 94-94-96, coiny sounding as all get out signal. Perfect Trace. Big silver for sure. I saying c'mon Barber half. (#2 on my list ) After flipping some dirt I see a big silver reeded edge. I say sh!t this is a silver dollar. NOT. A watch cover. In the pic if you look at the rim you'll see what got me all hot and bothered. Maybe next time. To close out the day I hit a 2 wheat spill, then another lone wheatie. All 3 from late 40s & 50s. It was a decent day and it kept my silver streak alive.
Yesterday I headed back to my honeyhole to grid a few areas that I had not got to. First, the path where on a recent trip I hit a pair of Merc's and a silver GW. A solid 24 was a shallow slick nickle (1900 V) and close by a 25 gave up a 1904 V nickle. I have dug at least 7 or 8 shallow (less than 2 in. ) old nickels on this path. Next I move up in to the honeyhole's honey hole. Ha ha. I dunno know maybe 15-20 feet in diameter. Its the area that has given up a bunch of silver, wheats, some Ihps and alot of other cool finds. I'm at a loss how this small area keeps puking up old coins. On a recent trip I dug a 1908 Barber dime not two feet from where I dug a masked 1890s Barber dime a few years back. Well yesterday guess what, yep, another 1908 Barber dime was hiding in there. Now these 3 Barber finds were in maybe a 3 ft in diameter area. Believe me when I say if I hit a good target I will work that area to death trying to find what else might be laying in there. Yesterday this signal was a little different. A 50s signal with a red line says iron but along with it I got a bit of a high coin tone. Considering the area, I had to dig. Down about 8 in. I see a rusty nail on top of the pile. I figured as much, but I had to know. Hit the pile again with the carrot, as the dirt shifts I see a small coin, gotta be silver, a wipe of the rim gives it away, another light wipe, a 1908 Barber. First silver for the day, I shake my head and think the detector gods sure have been smiling on me. Then in my best Doc Holiday accent I say "Have Friends " Stick the pinpointer back in, it goes off, there was a wheat in the hole. Crusty, 1913 I think. The next good find was a jumpy 60s70s and had some nice tone. A small black coin comes out, it was a good 9 in, or better down, A Merc was # 2 on the day. I rescan with the Manticore to see why I wasn't getting a clean tone. At the edge of the hole I get a 1. Take about a 2 in slice down and out to the pile and I see a coin, kind of pinkish in color. It was a very crusty 1914 Barber dime. Nothing on the rescan. Wow a little silver spill. Now I have trifecta on my mind and when I nailed a dime signal up against a tree I said c'mon, how about a Rosie. Well it was, but it was clad. Keep in mind I haven't been digging any modern coinage. No trifecta. A couple more wheaties and a few older Jeff nickels, 2 from the 50s and a 65. Last signal was a Buff. For me it had a been a long one, over 8 hours so I just ordered pizza on the way home. This area had given up very little over the past few years till the last month or so, 3, 3 silver hunts. an Ihp. some wheats and multiple Buff's and Vs. Hope the streak continues. And as usual my apologies for the winded post. Thanks for looking in. Mark
