Man This Gets Me Mad And I Run Across This Bull To Much

Bill G

Member
Out for a little hunt this morning with the Outlaw at an old county park and what do I run across again, un-filled holes. I cleaned everything up real nice ( glad it was not in the grass area ). The grounds keepers at this park are very detector friendly guys ( as a matter of fact I gave one of the keepers a set of head phones for there pipe & valve detector, he was asking me a few tips on how to use it ). I want to keep there opinion of metal detecting a positive one.

Jerks like the guy that left these holes are getting way to common these days for my liking.

Happy Hunting All, :detecting:

Bill, are you sure those holes were left by another coin hunter. All, with the possible exception of the first picture, look like skunk holes. Skunks come out at night digging for grubs, yellow jackets, etc. and leave holes just like that. I have them in my yard all the time.

A few of them are what your talking about for sure but a couple of them and the ones I filled before ( still had the trash next to them ) they were like the hole in pic 1 for sure done by a digger. I should have took pic' of those but had already fixed them and they were a few trees down from where these were. The targets in this area were pretty shallow some of the small digs looked to be done with a tool the others look to be done by an animal because of the scratch marks. Sorry I did not realize Skunks did this.

Take Care,

Those are skunk holes

My mistake you are more than likely completely right about most all of these holes. I was not aware Skunks did this ... I did find a few holes with the trash still laying next to them like the bigger hole in the one pic in another spot a few trees down and had filled them not taking any pic's. Not knowing these were skunk holes I thought somebody really went to town.

Boy I am embarrassed  thanks for correcting me guys now I know.

haha at the skunk holes. i would have never guessed it. around here we have the armadillo to worry about and will leave a hole just like the lazy, inconsiderate wannabe gold digging detectorists..... the only give away(differences in holes) would be the left behind trash. :ranting:

No worries. Better to know than to see some guy out there detecting and see those holes and go give him a talking to lol :stretcher: We have alot of skunks out here is the only reason I know. Good to see people care that much. Never be embarrassed. I can think a time or to where I made a mistake.

Thanks Brother ,

That makes me feel a little better for sure. Well I sure learned something and I thank you for that.

Skunks are a pain when it comes to digging holes. I had the same thing happen in my yard and my wife accused me of doing it. I borrowed my buddy's trail camera and caught the skunk in action digging. I showed her the pics and she said she would have never dreamed that a skunk would do that.

Skunk holes or not, Bill brings up a problem that will eventually ruin it for all of us. I get along with all the park employees and rangers and make it a point to do so. Too many of them have told me though that they are sick of rookies coming out to the parks with shovels and digging the place all up. One county park employee told me that if this keeps happening and they don't catch and fine the offender that eventually metal detecting will not be allowed. They have no problem with detectorist that fill their holes and leave no trace of their activity. He told me that he for sure does not want a few to ruin it for many and that if I saw that person to give them a quick lesson in recovery techniques. He also stated that if they get cocky or smart off, just take their license plate number and call him. They will give them a $380 fine and probably confiscate the detector.

Just some things to remember. Don't dig big holes trying to dig up large iron, leave it in the ground. Practice pin pointing, you only need to cut a 3" wide plug. Use a drop cloth to put your dirt on!!!!!

Don't be embarrassed Bill. If I didn't know better I'd figure some guy hit a coin spill, dug them up with a screw driver, and hauled ass. Note skunk holes in the dirt

Skunk or not, you did a good job to clean up those holes Bill G.

Seriously.

The general public probably wouldn't know what they were. If they see a detectorist and then see a bunch of holes, they might jump to conclusions. I sometimes run into holes that I know came from animals, but fill them in anyways so that the landowner/groundskeeper doesn't mistakenly think they were from me.

It's always good to leave a place a little nicer than you found it and I salute you for that.

Thanks everyone for the support I felt a little foolish at first after finding out the truth about the holes. Like I mentioned there was a few holes in another part of the park that still had the trash next to them that I filled as well ( I new these were from a person for sure) Like 2 Much Trash said above I thought someone may have hit a coin spill and used a screwdriver or small narrow digging spade to extract the targets. I never dreamed a Skunk could have done that.

Thanks Everyone,
Bill G

Too much! If it's important, spell it correctly...

So the spelling is more important than the point of the topic ???
