What kind of depth will I get out of the Silver uMax?
6-8" on coins. By slowing the coil down, maybe an inch more.
thats about right I think for most areas

Why buy a beginner machine?
First off there is no such thing ... all Tesoro detectors will find the goodies.

Did you mean simpler to operate?
In two weeks you will have mastered a simple machine and wish you had bought something you can adjust more.

Start off with a detector like the Vaquero and you will be happy for years.
It has all the control you would ever need and detects really deep.

Here's why I now recommend lower priced detectors to people who are beginners. For probably 35 of the 41 years I've been detecting I've been asked by quite a few local people, and several non locals, what would be a good detector to start with. Initially I recommended mid range detectors, with ID meters after meters we made available, but almost all of the people who bought detectors tried them a few times and decided detecting wasn't for them.. That left them with a several hundred dollar investment that was either stuck in a closet or sold at big loss. Now I recommend lower priced models for beginners, specifically a Compadre, Silver

I want to buy a new metal detector land and under water to travel to other countries, in Peru there is a lot of black sand. Which metal detector do you recommend?? one person said Excalibur 1000 II Minelab work beautifully but cost $1200.00 any other metal detector similar for less money.

I have owned the Compadre, the Silver uMax and the Cibola.

The Compadre is the only one I kept.
