Looking for air testing results

they say Minelab do better in the ground then the air i dont know if that true

Sure is true and Im speaking from my own experience. I dont know if you could say its true about the musky series but the multi freq ones for sure. Ive got a couple of Sovs and an Etrac right now and would be willing to show anyone who claims otherwise.

Im not saying its any kind of advantage mind you, just that what it is, is what it is and thats a fact. Some say its the ground matrix, some say its coins halos.......whatever, I just know they do.

Trouble with air testing its not indicative to what a detector can do in actual hunting conditions.
The detector that doesn't air test as good as the other may actually do better in the ground with the same coil or different coil combo.

I have no argument with the first part of this statement, but I've heard and seen the second part of the statement for years. Doesn't make any sense at all to me that a detector would do better in the ground than in the air where there's no mineralization or other factors to affect the test. That said, I've read where it IS TRUE with PI machines, but don't have a clue as to the validity of that and would like to hear from those that have PI machines to clarify the question.

Bill Ive only owned a couple of PIs (HH PI and the Whites Dual Field) and they both didnt air test all that well but were crazy deep on the beach. The minelab FBS/BBS machines air test better but also go crazy deep on the beach. How they do it I couldnt tell you.
Now in reverse have you ever air tested a hot Shadow X5? Really amazing but your not gonna get near that in the ground with one.

Sorry I ask, I will work it out on my own.

Thanks all is was fun will it lasted.

Interesting how a thread that starts innocently can become a can of worms, LOL.

Yep and I do understand how they get off track. No hard feelings and I got a little info.

I was undecided on the depth of a future test garden, now I think I will just air test each item and that will be the depth.

No apologies necessary but thanks. I am okay

Scanman,
What ever works for you, I did something like that I just say air test less 2" in the ground. But I also have a small test garden like 2 coins and both are at 7". I picked 7" because the silver around here is about 5 to 6". If you end up putting out a test garden keep in mind that it will not work until it gets some age on it, like more than a year.

Ron there is a Lobo Super Track depth test on youtube by a guy named Keith Southern. Very well made video, he has the 8" brown round coil on it. He says he played with the pots inside a little but it sure gets some great depth.
Also you can clearly hear the audio of the Lobo, first time I ever heard it, and it sounds like a Tiger Shark I had a few years back.
His test is in ground.
