looking for a GTA 1000- How do I know if it has the power master on it?

Elwood

New member
I am trying to break into the MD Hobby on a very limited budget. I am looking for an older, capable machine that I will enjoy that is less expensive due to age.
The GTA looks like a decent detector but how do I know if it is the power master? Can that be added later?

Any other recommendations on detectors is very welcome. Any opinions about this one are also welcome. It will be for general anything and everything use.

Thanks, Elwood.

There were 2 1000's produced. The Ultra and the Powermaster. The only way to tell them apart is the decals on the battery case. One sez Ultra and the other sez Powermaster. The PM is by far the better of the 2, I've had both, gave the Ultra away in a contest and still have the PM. If you can find one in good condition in the $250 range, snap it up. You might want to go ahead and plop your cash down on a 250 though. It's really a better hunter and more up-to-date electronics than the old 1000 and weighs about 1/2 as much and has nearly all the same features, all at a little over $200. Good luck and good hunting!!

I would love to find something in the $100 range. And yes, I am aware of how little that is in this arena.

Power Master on the side of battery box. That was my first Garrett detector and it was a good little detector.

Check out the Pawn Shops. Every now and then you can find a detector
someone has pawned. I once came across an MXT with an extra coil for $250.
It had been in the guys shop for two weeks. By the time I got across town to get it,
someone had just come in and snapped it up. Go figure.

Yes I have checked the classifieds on this and other forums. A lot of newer pricey items.

I have a couple of compound bows that I would trade for a detector. I need to list them in the classifieds.

I am looking at a GTAx 400 also. Can anyone tell me which is better between the Ultra 1000 and the GTAx 400?

My goodness, your going the wrong direction. Stay away from the 400, not Garretts' best offering. Staying under $100 for a decent detector with pinpoint and a display is darned near impossible. Just remember, you get what you pay for. Save up your dough and when you have enough, plop it down on something decent. Buying used is a tricky thing. I buy used all the time but expect to pay 1/2 of what the machine cost new. If it has to be sent in for repair when I get it, I'm still ahead. If you don't want all the bells and whistles, look on The Bay for an old Freedom Ace Plus. Should be able to pick one up in the $80 range. Good little beep-dig knobby machine that gets decent depth and is easy to use. It's what I use in competition hunts.

A couple of weeks ago I was in a local pawn shop and they had 3 detectors in there. One was an Ace 250 but even in a pawn shop it was 149.00. Don't remember what the others were but one was a real cheap looking machine for about $80. So I'm thinkin that you won't find much of a detector for $100. Buy a propointer and tape it to a broom handle.

You don't know me well enough to doubt my ability to find deals. We will see what we see.

I just bought a Silver

Scratch the White's. I bought a Minelab Musketeer Advantage for $120 and found a new Delta 4000 for $100 shipped. I passed on it because I had already bought the Musketeer.

So far, I have found a Bandido 2, Silver Sabre, Silver

Has anyone here had any experience with the Grand Master Hunter CX II ? I might be able to pick one up but
don't know anything about it. Owner says it has been in closet many yrs and used in the field no more then 5 to 6 hrs.
I have to admit it looks brand new. I have no idea what to offer, the owner says he paid a little over 700.00 $. It has two
coils, one about 8" and one about 12".......Owner lost the op manual.

Thanks
