Long underwear suggestions?????

Well-known member
Can any of you members suggest a brand of thermal or quilted long underwear to wear when working in the water? Something to go under my chest waders. I went to a sporting goods outlet and they had the cotton products and something called: Armor long underwear and the sales person said all the farmers and hunters were buying it. It was a blend of synthetic fabrics, but looked mighty thin to me. I'm trying to get permission to search an old mill pond where my late stepfather ran a gristmill. The mill was re-located to an agricultural history museum in Tifton, Ga and I would like to search the edges of this old mill pond and the two streams that ran below the gates. It's been pretty cold here lately and I want to get something to keep me from hypothermia. I used to use a product that was called quilted long underwear in the late 1970's while working in the oil fields in La., but can't seem to find anything like that around here. It really kept me warm on land and on the rigs out at sea and it got mighty cold when you were 60 to 100 miles offshore and the wind was blowing. Thanks and happy hunting everybody. Happy New Year, also.

Yes, that UnderArmor stuff appears thin, but It works.....I wear it under the waders and with a thin pair of pants over them..I also wear the bottoms sort of like a poor boys wetsuit when the water temp is too cool for shorts, but too hot for waders. The underarmor beanie for my noggin is great too, I wear it year round...in the summer a guy can soak it and it keeps the head cool, I think I have got to go get in the water this afternoon, its 29 degrees, but low wind, and I really need a hunt!.
Underarmour is pretty expensive, but so is dying.

Thanks Mud,
Now if she's got some bull-moose sized, I'll be ready to go. I don't want anything to stop me from water hunting, it is easier on my back and I found more stuff than I ever did on land. I don't intend to give up on land hunting, but when I'm in more pain that usual water is an outlet for my hobby and it helps me deal with stress better. When I used to go months without dirt fishing because of pain, I got very frustrated and I'm kind of antsy because I haven't been able to go in a few weeks. I'm going back to the spring this afternoon and taking my waders and scoop and checking it out. HH

UnderArmor is good and polypropelen long underwear work good too. I have used polys for years hunting and ice fishing.

I called the lady back I talked to and she has some in my size. Like you said, it's expensive, but cheaper than dying. $54.95 each for top and bottoms, but if it will let me hit the water, it will be worth it. I'm going to pick up a couple thermos bottles, one for food and one for coffee or hot chocalate and I will be hunting the water this winter while everybody else is waiting on spring to get out. I believe I found enough at the river the last few weeks to pay for my scoop, waders, sling and my gas back and forth. One area I didn't hit before is going to be the first place I go tomorrow. There is an old ferry below the power dam in this same town and it's on private property, but if the river is down where I metal detect will be public property and I hope to hit it next week. I have to drive by tommorrow when I'm in the area and see if the water is still down. The water above the dam is at almost full levels, but it's still low below the dam. Before they built the dam, this ferry went to the old town of the same name. With the power dam construction, they had to move the town and I have to find out if it's the property of the power dam commission or private property. My dog and I were walking along this river a few years ago and saw a 6 foot alligator and we went back to the car. We were right at the river's edge and gators sure like dogs I hear. He was laying on a sand bar and I thought he was a log until he sprouted legs and ran into the water. Lord have mercy. They should all be hibernating until warm weather, I just don't want to get down there and hear the whistle blow signaling the opening of the gates. The old mill I want to go to was built in 1878, but the man's family died from disease, either malaria or something else and he sold the mill to someone else. I have my research cut out for me, I've done quite a bit, but need to finish up next week. HH and thanks.

Did you ever see that video of Aquachigger finding 7lbs of silver coins in a shallow river with his atPro a few years ago? all of them were from the 17 and 1800's...I dont know if it was at a ford crossing, but you know folks tried to cross when they shouldn't have all the time...I bet just down stream a little would be a good place, you will know for sure in a hurry once you start finding old stuff..good thing the snakes and gators and spiders will be dormant, now you have a place to play all winter! :clapping:
I'm gonna hit a sledding hill tomorrow am, since its been snowing all day, then try to find some open water myself...Regarding the thermals.. you could get by with some regular sweat pants under a pair of thin work pants for insulation...I did it this way in some real cold country trapping beaver long ago before underarmor came out with no ill effects. a couple of shirts on in layers, and you will probably be just fine without spending a lot of money..just a thought.
Let us know what you find out, its great to read your posts!

I've got a suggestion for your long underwear.:ranting:
Do not dry them in the drier it dry rots out the elastic waste band
and makes them less than desirable to wear!
:nopity:

I had a pair of sweatpants and sweatshirt, but they no longer fit. I could probably get the under Armor cheaper online, but I want to hit the water today. I will make sure and let them air dry, but as much as I plan to water hunt this winter, I believe it will be worth it in the long run to buy at least one set. I can't go to the river today like I planned because Mama isn't feeling well, but the spring is just 3 miles from my house and I can get home to see about her in a hurry. Hoping I can find something in the water that I missed on land. Hope I find something worth posting about. HH.

I live in Yuma Az so cant help you

Underarmour is good, Patagonia might be better as it's available in thicker weight cloth. Never put modern high-tech synthetic fabrics in the dryer!! Do you wear neoprene waders?? If not you should try them, they are very warm even without long underwear. I fish in the surf in the northeast in the fall, and the neoprene waders keep me pretty comfortable, and the Patagonia thermal undies do their job when it's really cold. Happy New Year, and good luck!!

I don't know what my chest waders are made of, but it got pretty cold before I got the underarmor. The exception is my feet are like ice and I hope to find something to combat this. I think it's because the largest boot size they had was a size 12 and they are a little snug on my feet and may cut off the circulation. I wear a 10-1/2 triple EEE shoe and a size 12 came in a regular size with the waders and it's a little tight. Once I get out in the water and move around I'm okay except for the cold feet.

Hey fongu, go to the sportsman's guide.com. They have tons of military surplus clothing from militaries all over the world.
Lots of great deals on cold weather clothing.

I have used undergarments called "freeze out" during foul weather motorcycle rides...it works very well and runs about $50.00 for the top and the same for the pants. It is available through "Cycle Gear."

This is just insane :-( I post questions on trying to figure out my machine and get hardly any replays. You post about what fricken underwear to buy and get a ton of replays :-( this forum is jacked up
