long hard hunt w/ the Outlaw

I had the same experience digging that old yard in the US.

I found the rusty "bent" nails sounded really good. In most holes I was pulling out several nails.

I was running my disc a little lower than you did. I am not experienced with old US coins, so I was pretty conservative. I had mine just below 5c most of the time.

Some of those nails would vanish when hit from another angle.. the bent U shaped ones sounded like something to dig from all directions.

Looks like you made out pretty well. Isn't it nice digging a location where you aren't as concerned about the holes you dig? :)

Were you running your ground balance slightly negative or perfectly balanced? I am now wondering in hindsight if that might have caused these nails to stand out so much for me.

Shaun

Hi Shaun, yes, it was nice to just dig the crap out of the place without worrying about dead grass! I still filled my holes and you couldnt really see where i had been because the whole yard was dead and dirty.

regarding the ground balance: I try to keep it just slightly negative because several users (and one in particular) have said that if one GB's neutral in All -Metal then switches to Disc, the detector will have a positive GB, sometimes so positive that large silver will not register (the detector will miss it). Dont ask me how or why, I dont know enough about the physics of MDs yet to tell you. Im trusting those who seem to know about this stuff and making adjustments accordingly. Ive tested (air and garden) the Outlaw after GBing slightly negative and it appears to perform well. How this affects the Outlaw's inability to disc out rusty nails is a whole other matter that i am not qualified to address.

What setting did you use to dig the beer!

Ha! I could give you the recipe-- I brew beer when the weather or home responsibilities do not allow me to get out to do my outside hobbies.

So do I--I have been a brewer for over 25 years!

You've got me beat by over 20 years then! Im pretty new and pretty passionate about both hobbies.

Nothing like coming home to a cold home brew after some hard hours treasure hunting...or, in case its winter, while thinking about and researching hunts for the Spring.

I did the same thing. Pack it down and a hand sweep was enough to erase my evidence. So dry that stuff was.. it was like digging through foam!

I too run it in the negative. Not with the DD coil though.. that one seems to need to be perfectly balanced to work.

After the fact I was wondering if that was why I was hitting on those nails so much.

At one point I put the disc almost all the way up and it was still hitting the nails pretty hard, so disc.ing them out seemed to be an impossiblity!

Yeah! I need to brew soon, I actually bought beer for a few times this summer. I will make a lager as soon as it gets a little cooler. It has also been too hot to do much dtecting. I am glad Fall is coming.

I actually get a guilty feeling when I buy beer at a store now. Like Im cheating , or am lazy, or something!

Havent tried to lager yet. I have an old 'fridge that I hope to turn into a lagering cooler at some point though. Thats number 476 on my "things I need to do" list...
