life on the beach

Let start by saying Hi! I'm so new to this...the sun has not risen on my Ace 250 yet. I have watched the DVD, read the manual, and picked up alot of un-seen roofing nails from the yard. I received the detector as a B-day gift..( which I asked for...) and will be heading to the coast in 3 days. In the model comparison, it shows the Ace 250 not in the running for surf/beach hunting. what can I expect?

:usaflag:I think you can expect to change your mind by the end of your beach hunt.:detecting:

And I would stick to the beach, because although the Ace's coil and stem are waterproof, the unit itself is not. Stay shallow or one rogue wave will end your hunt. Have fun & good luck !!

Good luck youll LOVE it......

Im nevious i wished a beach other than
a polluted lake was close to me!!!!

The Ace is one great machine and it will find you some goodies on the beach but it is not designed for high beach performance. I'm sure your wanting to find some gold rings and jewelry in which the beach is the best place to do that.

To make your hunt more pleasurable and increase your chance on finding some good stuff I would recommend purchasing a long handle beach scoop. You will not waste your time bending over and digging with a hand held scoop that way.

Locate a tide chart for the area your hunting and hit the beach about 2 hours before low tide and hunt the wet sand from high tide to the low water line. I would start perpendicular to the water at the high tide line and work to the water edge and then back up overlapping your swing. When you find an area parallel with the water that is producing some coins you can then work up or down the beach parallel with the water to increase your odds at locating the heavier objects like gold rings and other jewelry. If you locate an area on the beach where the surf has cut the sand down lower than the rest of the beach and the sand is rippled or a little water may still be standing, I would hunt that area very thoroughly because it may produce some good finds.

I have never used an Ace 250 on the beach but I would expect you can dig 6 to 10 inch targets in the wet sand, it will not produce the 18 to 20 inch targets that an Infinium LS or the Sea Hunter will find, but you should be able to find some good stuff if your willing to put in the hours. Keep an eye on the dry sand areas where folks lay their beach towels or have a tent set up, you can find some coins and maybe a lost piece of jewelry in those areas too, however your best chance of finding gold is going to be from the damp sand at the high tide line to the water edge.

Good Luck

Welcome to the forum!:wave:This is a wonderful community and a great place to share info!:garrett::detecting:Welcome to the hobby of metal detecting. Feel free to ask for advice at anytime.
As far as the Ace goes for beach hunting, it should be fine on the dry sand. When you get down into the wet sand(salt water)just reduce the sensitivity if you start to get alot of falsing. Jewelry mode is probably best for the beach. Remember, alot of gold rings hit right on the pulltab notch, so if you notch out pulltabs you'll be missing out on gold rings. If you're diggin' up pulltabs, then you know that you could just as easily get a gold ring. Provided, of course, that you get your search coil over it.:wiggle:Best of luck to ya!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Metalhead is right on. You may have some problems with a lot of falsing/false signals and unnessesary chatter in the wet sand. If this is so lower your sensitivity, but keep it as high as the machine will tolerate and still operate smoothly.
Jewelry mode would be your best bet a lot of gold will pick up around the pull tab and nickel target ID area. If you do not have headphones I would get a good set that covers your whole ear, this will greatly enhance your ability to locate and hear targets the you otherwise will not pickup do to noise of the surf, plus will extend your battery life by at least 1/3.

Good Luck

I read somewhere and I can't remember where that the coils on the Garrett are submersible in fresh water, but not salt water. Of course, I may just be confused. I am planning to bring my GTI-2500 to Amsterdam and hit the beaches this November. Does it do well on the beach? I know it has salt elimination settings.

Speaking of beaches, anybody know anything about a book called: "The Beachcomber's Handbook" by, Warren Merkitch? Is it a good read? It was written quite a few years ago, I believe, but was mentioned in Mr. Garrett's book about searching sand and surf, beaches, etc.

For a newbie it is best to stay out of the water and the wet salt sand ( salt is a mineral ) and adjust your sensitivity accordingly and you should do well.

Wow...thanks for the all the info. i have been Geo-caching for over five years and know the value of a good forum. The GPSr I use has tide charts based on your present location. The section of beach we are going to is private (rental houses only for miles) and early in the season. I'm looking at it half-full. On one hand, not alot of folks on the beach per 100 yds. On the other hand, not alot of competition. Thanks again...I'll use the info and keep you posted!

Good luck on the beach and don't forget to post some pictures of your finds. Thanks Uncle Willy, glad to know the coils are waterproof in any environment. Anybody read the book I mentioned? If so, pro or con. Thanks.

Welcome to detecting. The salt water beaches vary in effect on Ur detector. I understand Florida beaches are quite different from the Mid Atlantic. Metalhead & bcoop are on the mark. I keep sens at no more than 4 and use JEWELRY mode. Good Luck & HAVE FUN!!

I've learnned alot today....and I am convinced I can find it if it's there. I found 3 pull tabs and 2 pennies, The only problem I saw today was very limited access to the beach, and ....counting my wife, two people per 100 yds. On higher ground, in loose sand sens was not a prob, but found when you covered wet sand you picked up the false sigs.Corrected and moved on. Having a ball....now ...where to go during high tide. BTW...stealing wireless from the neighbors..don't know how long that will last.

Why is there not many people on the beach? The more people there and the more in the water the more that is lost.

Hope you find some goodies

We are on Topsail Island NC. Private and rental houses only....no hotels! We normaly go to Myrtle Beach but a friend hooked us up here. The public accesses have little to no parking and are few and far between. I'm sure it will pick up by the upcoming holiday weekend. May have to journey to a more populated area.......

Well there may be more there than you think, might not be as many detectorists work that area.

Found out today the island has been importing virgin sand from the ocean to rebuild the beaches from past hurricanes. In fact...the storm that is coming ashore NOW.... is producing very high tides to the point that there is no beach at all during that time. I did go to the center of town aka the pier, and recovered 4 pull-tabs, two bottle caps, an untold number of buried beer cans, and one penny.
It felt like I was working for the town maintenance department. I am learning the signals though. :) just workin' on my swing and dig!

How deep have you been digging targets?

Sounds like your enjoying yourself anyway. Hope you find a gold ring, you'll be hoodked for life.

I've been digging them all up to 8+ finding mostly trash...but you never know. No beach at all this evening. I got the Garmin 60CSx out today and did some geocaching. It's all good!
