Let's Start A Campain- Pop Targets With Screwdriver Whenever Possible!

I believe I covered the logistics behind that- if you know your spot you can pretty much judge just how deep the oldies are going to be. Many of my spots find silver is about 5 or 6" or deeper. Anything less and out comes the screwdriver.. Of course if you know your machine you can often tell if it's a clad too. If you round off your probe properly scratching shouldn't be a problem. For added insurance some dip the end of the the probe in that rubberized stuff used to coat tool handles found at home improvement stores. Never felt the need to do that myself.
