Legend in arboretum hunt!

Ronstar

Well-known member
Took the Legend to the 120 yr old university arboretum this morning. Put the 6” coil on as the forest floor is low plants and limb debris. After about 45 minutes of digging 41-42 non ferrous signals and getting lots of aluminum screw caps from the cheap wine days (most likely late 60 to early 70s) I decided that was enough and lesson learned. I moved a little closer towards the center of the area and hit a solid 46 so that should be a dime! Nope, an old rifle casing! Most likely a 45-60 and the headstamp was F 86. (Post on Civil War Forum for a little help).
About 20 feet past that I got a repeatable high faint 52 signal so thinking maybe a quarter. Showed deep so dug down and saw the outline of a penny (one cent) on the back. Pulled it out and the outline of an Indian on front! 1903 in good but used shape so getting happy here. Decided to do a grid pattern but nothing else so moved on.
A short distance later I started hitting 33 full on non ferrous number. Ferrometer showed fully non ferrous so after getting a few thought I better dig one and see what they were. Big ol large lead bullets thats what! 395 gr .45 cal lead bullets!! Started getting more 46 non ferrous numbers again so dug those, they were 30-06 blank cases! Headstamps were 50s so figure ROTC was having fun in the woods back in the day.
One weird find was what I thought was a silver dime at 8”, I mean it came out shiny! A bit of a shock to see 2000 D on the front. The area is black loamy soil so maybe????? Got home and it does have the copper edge, go figure.
Running in Field with M1 setting, sens at 20. Good targets hit loud and clear and machine was quiet. Going back when I can, has to be more goodies in those woods!

Keep in mind the soil there is pretty loose, no indication of clay level yet at that depth. Also that dang dime showed no clad “rust” either. But that aside, machine and detector were pretty stellar!!!

Yeah, 9" with a 6" coil got my attention, too. Good job on the Indian. They are as good as a later era silver dime to me. HH jim tn

wow ! That ferrometer seems to be a big deal on the legend. Amazing technology !

I do not rely on it, rather its a tool to assist in determining the likelihood of trash v treasure. The IH penny didnt even register and was a faint hit at what normally would have been a quarter by numbers. A couple of digs registered one or two bars of iron and they indeed turned out to be rusty steel bottle caps! The damn aluminum cheap quart size wine bottles of the 60-70s were the stinkers today.
I think NM stole Elmy’s magic formula, at least the 110 pattern minimum!!!!

On the other hand the full non ferrous indication at lower numbers is what got me to dig the “what the hell” signal and discover 140 year old bullets.
Go figure

You calling Boone's Farm wine cheap, hey that is all us soldiers could afford back then. Most of us were 19-20 yr olds and were not even old enough to buy beer, had to get it at the PX or vending machines in the barracks.

Glad you are enjoying the Legend. Every new detector takes a while to really get to know it well. Way to go on the Indian Head!

Annie Greensprings is what I was finding mainly……😂😂

Matt, the IH was a complete surprise! Manual suggests deeper items may up VDI. 52 is just under quarter numbers. I was hoping, as we all do, that older silver may be mixed in with those 1890-1910 era rifle cases and bullets. Did someone prior simply pass over those numbers as trash? Could be. The lead bullets were in tabs territory but the ferrocheck was full on non ferrous so dug to see what it was (I have dug a couple cases and bullets with the F75 but cant remember what value I got). I’ve now dug a couple things I knew were junk but needed to verify my call with what it was actually in the ground. The one stinker for now is the old style pull ring with attached beavertail, exact same number as the bullets. I do tho think the tone is slightly different.
So far I’m impressed with its performance in generally default settings.
