Legal Question About Find

Hello All
I live in MA and I bought an old house and was renovating it when I found a stash of old coins that might be valuable, as per Ebay like 2k-3k each.
they where hidden behind a wall, behind a chimney wall within the bricks.
are they mine ? do I have to report them? whats the rule of thumb here.
Thank you.

?*&%$%^*@*Y ! You can send them to me. I promise not to tell anyone. You can always put one on ebay and let the bidding begin.

Just saw this….. not trying to be the spoil sport here…
Go online and research MA law regarding theft. Most states have a sub section regarding possession of lost or forgotten property. It can have the same ramifications as theft. Primary point here would there be anyway to find who owned the house at about the time they could have been concealed. Mostly nil but county or city property ownership records exist and its more probable if older coins then those owners most likely have passed. Hiding money was common during the Depression.
Just know what your rights are and what your comfortable living with. Im placing the bet you are fine as police records probably no longer exist for that time era (if they were reported missing or stolen) and family members would have been actively looking if known about.

I’m sure if you advertise “coins found” you will have plenty of folks claiming ownership.

Self reporting something like this is akin to people that find treasure hordes and immediately tell the state/federal gov.
If the authorities can, they will take advantage of you (especially if there is money involved).

They raise their hands and yell "LOOK AT ME! FINE ME! TAKE MY S#@!!".

You scored. You didn't steal it.
Finders keepers...

I would quit talking about it and enjoy. Chances are that they were hidden decades ago and the person that concealed them is long dead, along with immediate family. There is, of course, the “Law.” But, there is also common sense. I’d choose common sense.
