Large Copper, Disappointment, and some Bees

Well, my office was closed, but the wife's wasn't, and the kids had school, so that meant one thing. 8 hours of uninterrupted metal detecting, or so I thought.

I decided to check out a new site I have been researching. With the first few minutes I dug the two Wheaties; a 1949 and a 1935, so knew the site was virgin. Then about 20 minutes later I dug the large copper. At first I thought it might be a large cent or a colonial, but once I picked it up and saw the young queen looking up at me, I knew immediately I found nothing more than a 1964 British One Pence. An odd find for the area I was hunting in, just the same!

A few minutes later my day was cut short when I stepped on a yellow jacket nest. I didn't realize I was getting stung for quite a few seconds. I thought it was thorns. When I finally realized it they were swarming all over! I ran to the car with the angry insects in hot pursuit! I was lucky I got away with 5 or 6 stings! It sure cut my day short!!!

Nice finds, bummer about the wasps.

Glad you made it out of that ordeal okay. Those boogers can really ruin a feller's day. Wha'd ya do for the stings. Paste made with water and meat tenderizer works wonders.

Yeah them yeller jackets are onry little turds but not as bad as those huge bumble bees we had in the Midwest that got as big as your thumb. When we were kids my buddy got nailed by one right between the eyes. Knocked him right on his butt. By the time I got him home his forehead had swelled up and closed his eyes and turned blue. His nose was the size of a cucumber. By the time they got him to the hospital they wasn't sure he was going to make it but he was a tough little fart and snapped out of it but he sure looked like hell for awhile.

Course another time a bunch of us were skinny dipping at a local creek and this one kid ( twelve years old ) dove into a swarm of baby cotton mouths. He didn't make it. Hated cotton mouths ever since and have come close to getting nailed by one once or twice. Damned things ain't one bit scared of people.

Bill

I knew of a guy that dove into a sand pit, and had the same thing happen.
Lots of people used to go out there and swim, dive, etc on the weekends.
This one guy dove into the water, and the snakes swarmed him.
Killed him too. Kinda like the part in "Lonesome Dove" where the kid
gets swarmed crossing the river.. That stuff actually does happen some
times..
Myself, I wouldn't swim in those sand pits. I used to fish out of them though.
One evening I had a couple of decent catfish in a steel fish basket.
I caught another one, and when I lifted the basket, a big water moccasin
was hanging off the side. This snake actually was chewing through the
steel basket..It was all chewed up, and much longer and it would have
had a hole in it. He had bit that fish many times. I had to throw it away.
I'll never forget what that snake did to that basket. I didn't know they were
capable of such a thing.
Once up in Kansas on Lake Pomona we had a water moccasin climb into
the back of our boat at about 2AM while we were fishing. I was
probably in about 5th, 6th grade as far as age.
And we were out in the middle of the lake, not by the shore.
My dad scooped him up with a paddle and threw him overboard.
He climbed right up the back of the motor transom plate no problem at all.
I don't like those things.. Some people will say they usually don't go after
people, and some may well not.. But.. I've also seen a load of people say
where the snakes were very aggressive, and actually were chasing them
a ways. They can be pretty territorial. Also, they often run in pairs too..
If you see one, keep an eye out, as it's partner may be lurking nearby.
I hear copperheads often run in pairs too..
MK

Yeah moccasins are very aggressive and have little fear of people. Copperheads ( actually an upland moccasin ) are the same. MY father-in-law and me were drift fishing a little stream in IIlinois in an eight foot pram - jigging for crappie. THe trees along this stream grew out and over the stream forming almost a tunnel. Knowing that moccasins climb trees I had my eye out but I missed one as he dropped right in the middle of the boat on the pile of crappie laying there. We both were sitting on opposite ends of the boat and soon as the snake hit we bailed off and the cottonmouth had the boat all to himself. WE got the boat back later. I've had some hairy experiences with snakes. Got chased out of a creek one time while skinny dipping by a big cottonmouth who didn't want me in his territory. I was happy to give it back to him. :)

From the land of the Bluenose.....that sucks bigtime me bouy. Well one can count da blessings as you are not allergic to them. Hope the recovery was quick sir!

I was a foreman for an underground cable construction company in SC. I had to keep a watch on my men. The moccasins would come out of nowhere to attack. I would yell out a man's name and he would wait till the snake got close enough to cut it in half with his shovel. A really aggressive snake is the water snake. He is mean and I have had more then one chase me out of a swimming hole. Their mouth is fairly white and people mistake them for a moccasins. I think the most common snake in WV is the copper head. I have had many encounters with them. I have never found them to be aggressive. They mainly stay still or run.
I use to have a two acer yard. About every other time I mow it I would come across a yellow jacket nest. I would mark their hole in the ground with something. I would come back after dark when all the bees are in and pour about a cup of gas in the hole. In the morning, no more bees. I was a bee keeper and I learned that gas was very toxic to bees. That is how we would get rid of a hive of sick bees. Put a rag in front of the hive soaked with gas. The bees will circulate the air through the hive.

If the spot was good MDing go back on a cold day. Or find out the location of the nest and pour some gas in it some night. Don't tell the EPA.

Hey John. Does premium or regular work better????

I misunderstood what you meant, so I went back and tried to fart on them, and got 8 more bee stings on my ass!!!!

Smoke works great. Hair spray works better. Sticks their wings together and they drop like a rock. Also suffocates the little demons. Another deadly remedy for bee, hornet, and wasp nests is WD-40. Spray it in or on the nest and it's all over in seconds

You must have wimpy copperheads down there. :) The ones in Illinois when I lived there ran from no one. I had one run right between my legs one time. Since they are also a moccasin they have the same agressive traits as the cottonmouth. I was face to face with a big cottonmouth one time. HIs snout was about six inches from my face and we were staring at each other. Scared the sh%t out of me. Luckily he didn't bite me. Hell I had a blue racer chase me one time through some tall weeds. They will stand on their tail so they can see over the weeds and run through the weeds on the bottom half of their body. Damndest thing I've ever seen Can those buggers ever move.

Bill.

I sat on a rock while fishing and a copper head crawled out from the rock. I told him leave me alone and I will let you live and went on fishing. Difference is I have tried my best to catch a blue racer, man they are fast. I am always playing with snakes. Jump on the back of a gator once.

Yeah since I've lived and worked everywhere I've run into a lot of snakes and critters. In Arizon they have eleven different kinds of rattlesnakes and I met all of them. Then they have scorpions up the ying yang, tarantulas, gila monsters, and "jumping cactus." Here's a ten foot rattler some boys in Texas snagged.

Bill

Yeh, when I lived in Arizona I went to an old Gold mine and came out the other end of it and sat right next to a rock rattlesnake, he started getting all pissed and rattler was going nuts, freaked me out, dove back into the mine and went back out the other side and to my car and drove back to Tucson, being thankful I wasnt bitten.
